Hero MotoCorp is the world’s largest two-wheeler and India’s highest-selling motorcycle company. With over 40 per cent market share in India, Hero MotoCorp continues to innovate and develop new motorcycles and scooters for India and the export markets. It was founded by Brijmohan Lall Munjal in collaboration with Honda. For two decades, this collaboration created a massive company specialising in low-cost 100-1100cc motorcycles. However, this alliance (Hero Honda) ended in 2010 and both became a big competitor.
Currently, Hero MotoCorp has a total of five factories with a sixth one constructed in Andhra Pradesh. It has one of the biggest R&D centres in the world at Kukas in Rajasthan. This is where all the development of bikes and scooters is done. There are a series of test tracks that simulate real-world situations.
Hero MotoCorp used to be called a company that makes only small-capacity motorcycles. But over the last few years, the company has designed and developed performance-based motorcycles that were also highly aspirational. Its most powerful motorcycle – the Mavrick is one the best bikes ever made. The Karizma also got reinvented and is now powered by a new liquid-cooled engine. The company has plans to launch an even much bigger bike. But just like for decades, the Splendor and the Passion Pro range bring in the maximum revenue for the company. Even in the scooter segment, Hero MotoCorp has made a strong presence. In fact, the Vida e-scooter is also doing business in plenty of regions in India.
Over the next few years, Hero MotoCorp will continue to focus on its bread and butter models, along with the growing 200-400cc segment. It has forged an alliance with many international brands like Harley-Davidson, and Zero Motorcycles and also has a major stake in Ather Energy – a leading EV company.
