MV Agusta Brutale 800 competition check

Motoroyale has finally brought the MV Agusta Brutale 800 to India at a price tag of Rs 15.59 lakh (ex-showroom). This baby brute will be an addition to the Brutale 1090 and 1090 R available here in India. The Indian market has seen a boom in the middleweight category in the last few months with a number of launches in the segment. Hence the bike competes against the Ducati Monster 821, the updated 2017 Triumph Street Triple 765 and the recently launched Kawasaki Z900. We find out how the Brutale 800 plays against its rivals.

Engine

The middleweight category has motorcycles featuring a variety of cylinder layouts. The MV Agusta Brutale 800 uses an in-line three cylinder, 798cc engine. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with an output of 108bhp at 11,500rpm and 83Nm of torque at 7,600rpm. Another in-line three is the Triumph Street Triple 765 with its 765cc engine which produces 111bhp of power at 11,250rpm and 73Nm of torque at 9,100rpm. The engine comes mated to a six-speed transmission. As is the standard for Ducatis, the Monster 821 also uses an L-twin engine. The 821cc liquid-cooled 11-degree Testastretta engine produces 110bhp and 89Nm of torque, the engine is mated to a six-speed transmission. The most powerful bike of the competition is the Kawasaki Z900, which sports a 948cc engine which is a smaller bored version of the Z1000’s block. The engine produces 123.30bhp at 9,500rpm and 98.60Nm of torque at 7,700rpm. It is mated to a six-speed transmission and transmits its power via a final chain drive.

Features

The most eye-catching feature of the Brutale 800 is its uniquely designed seat. LED daytime running lights are a nice touch. To add to that raw brute appeal, the Italian features triple exhaust pipes that accentuate the single-sided swingarm. The MV Agusta features a host of electronics like eight level traction control, three-way switchable ABS, two-way quickshifter and a hydraulic slipper clutch. The Brutale 800 also gets four riding modes: Rain, Normal, Sport and Custom. Braking at the front is done by twin 320mm discs and at the rear, the bike features a 220mm disc. Both ends are powered by Brembo. The other Italian in the game, the Ducati Monster 821, also gets modern tech like an eight-level traction control system, three-level ABS and a three-level ride-by-wire system. The Monster 821 borrows design cues from its bigger sibling, the Monster 1200. The Italian is quite a head turner with its exposed frame and beefed up tank, giving it an aggressive streetfighter stance. The Triumph Street Triple 765 too has modern electronics to keep up with the competition. The bike features two riding modes, switchable traction control, ride-by-wire throttle and ABS. On the other hand, Kawasaki have played their cards right by pitching the Z900 at an exceptional price. But customers who prefer electronic aids are only invited by ABS on the Z900 which is offered as standard.

Price

The Z900 is the most affordable bike of the lot priced at Rs 7.68 lakh ex-showroom. But the MV Agusta Brutale is a more premium brand and comes to India as a CBU (completely built unit) and is therefore priced at Rs 15.59 lakh. The Ducati Monster 821 is priced at Rs 9.92 lakh (ex-showroom) while the Triumph Street Triple 765 retails at Rs. 8.62 lakh (ex-showroom).
