Hero Xtreme 160R Summary

Price: Hero Xtreme 160R price for its variant - Xtreme 160R Single Disc is estimated at Rs. 1,22,009. The price for the other variants - Xtreme 160R Double Disc, Xtreme 160R Stealth and Xtreme 160R Connected are Rs. 1,25,237, Rs. 1,27,045 and Rs. 1,33,179. The mentioned Xtreme 160R prices are the average ex-showroom.

Hero Xtreme 160R is a street bike available in 4 variants and 6 colours. The Hero Xtreme 160R is powered by 163cc BS6 engine which develops a power of 15 bhp and a torque of 14 Nm. With front disc and rear drum brakes, Hero Xtreme 160R comes up with anti-locking braking system. This Xtreme 160R bike weighs 138.5 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 12 liters.

The Xtreme 160R is Hero’s newest entrant in the 150-160cc sporty commuter segment in India. The motorcycle is a replacement to the now-discontinued Xtreme Sports which failed to tug at the heartstrings of many buyers in the country during its existence.

The motorcycle sports a sharp styling that incorporates a radical-looking headlamp, beefy fuel tank and an upswept and sporty-looking tail section. On the design front, it is based on the Xtreme 1.R concept which Hero had showcased at the EICMA 2019 in Milan.

The feature list of the Xtreme 160R comprises of full-LED lighting for the headlamp, turn signals and tail lamp. It also gets hazard switch along with a side-stand engine cut-off switch. Additionally, it comes equipped with a fully-digital display and is available in two variants that differ in terms of braking hardware. Meanwhile, the motorcycle rides on 37mm telescopic forks upfront sourced from Showa and a monoshock at the rear.

Powering the Xtreme 160R is a 160cc, air-cooled engine that produces 15bhp at 8,500rpm and 14Nm at 6,500rpm. Lending it an impressive power-to-weight ratio is its kerb weight which is as low as 138.5kg. Hero claims that the bike does the zero-60kmph sprint in 4.7 seconds.

Hero is offering the Xtreme 160R in three colour options- red, white and blue. The company has also introduced a new fancier-looking limited edition red-white colour scheme of the bike which commemorates the brand’s achievement of crossing the 100 million cumulative production milestone. In terms of competition, the motorcycle takes on the Suzuki Gixxer, TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, Yamaha FZ S V3 and Bajaj Pulsar NS160 in India.

Moreover, Hero MotoCorp has announced the launch of the Stealth Edition of the motorcycle. This new edition, as the name suggests, gets an all-black theme along with highlights of red that are visible on the headlight mask and the alloy wheels. The Stealth Edition also benefits from additional features such as an integrated USB charger, five-level LCD brightness adjustment function, and a gear indicator.

Hero Xtreme 160R Review

  • Good Things

    • Fun to ride
    • Looks quite good
    • Fantastic pricing
  • Could be Better

    • Pillion comfort compromised
    • Basic instrumentation

BikeWale's Take

The Xtreme 160R is one extremely comfortable and fun to ride motorcycle. The 160cc single-cylinder engine has good grunt and city friendly. The bike is priced well too. But the pillion comfort has been compromised. Plus, the instrument cluster looks quite basic too.

Hero Xtreme 160R Expert Opinion

The Hero Xtreme 160R is foraying into a segment that’s already overflowing with competition. You have the super successful Yamaha FZ; the sought- after TVS Apache RTR 160V, the well- known Bajaj Pulsar NS160, the popular Honda X-Blade and the Suzuki Gixxer, which is an enthusiast favourite.

Introduction

Hero Xtreme 160R Action

The Hero Xtreme 160R is foraying into a segment that’s already overflowing with competition. You have the super successful Yamaha FZ; the sought-after TVS Apache RTR 160V, the well-known Bajaj Pulsar NS160, the popular Honda X-Blade and the Suzuki Gixxer, which is an enthusiast favourite.

But as it turns out, the 160R is also the best product to have rolled out from Hero MotoCorp’s factory floors. And that’s saying something because Hero already has the likeable Xpulse 200 and the Xtreme 200S in its portfolio. But how good is the Xtreme 160R really? And does it have any shortcomings at all? Let’s find out

The Visuals

Hero Xtreme 160R Right Front Three Quarter

The Xtreme 160R is a handsome looking motorcycle. It is compact, it finishes between the wheel axles, and it has the traditional street bike chest-heavy stance. But not everything about the 160R is traditional. The tank has been fused with the side panel, which gives it a curious but palatable look. And there are other interesting bits too.

Hero Xtreme 160R Headlamp

The all-LED headlamp is very space-age and emotive at the same time. The blacked out tail lamps give the motorcycle a custom-like look. And the rest - the dynamic spoke wheels, the aggressive front fender, the stepped single piece seat, the sporty rider footrests, and the stubby exhaust further complete the Xtreme’s modern, playful, and likeable aura.

The Package

Hero Xtreme 160R Engine

The engine in the 160R is a new one. It’s a 163cc air-cooled unit that makes 15bhp and 14Nm of torque. It is BS6 compliant and it has fuel injection. These output figures are healthy, but not extraordinary.

The chassis meanwhile does grab your attention for its lack of weight. The motorcycle overall weighs less than 140kg making it one of the lightest in its class. It follows the diamond-type construction. And bolted on to the chassis are a pair of right-way-up telescopic forks upfront and a preload adjustable monoshock at the rear.

Hero Xtreme 160R Action

The tyres are par for the course - a 100-section front and a 130-section rear tyre. And our more expensive dual disc version here gets a 276mm petal disc at the front and a smaller 220mm petal at the rear. It still runs single channel ABS, though.

In terms of features, the Xtreme 160R gets digital instrumentation that displays speed, engine rpm, time, odo and two trip meters. It also gets all-LED lighting from the headlamp to the tail lamp and the tune indicators.

Hero Xtreme 160R Tail lamp

It has a stepped seat, a flush-fitting fuel filler cap, and sporty looking rider footrests with proper heel plates. It also has a glide feature, which prevents the engine from stalling even without the rider’s throttle input. Left to cruise on its own - no clutch and no throttle inputs - the bike will still do 8kmph on a flat road all day long. It should help in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

The Ride

Hero Xtreme 160R Action

On the road, the Xtreme 160R impresses. Now I know we said that its engine output figures were nothing extraordinary. But, courtesy a flat torque curve and low kerb weight, the 160R feels alive from the word go.

That means not only does the Xtreme get off the mark with the exuberance of a lively puppy, but the mid range on the motorcycle is pretty potent too. So, overtakes are easy; exiting corners with dollops of throttle is rewarding; and general tomfoolery on the motorcycle is tremendous fun too.

Hero Xtreme 160R Action

It’s also a good handling bike. It is light and agile and effortless. And it’s sharp and responsive and brimming with feel. So riding it around corners or even just filtering quickly through traffic leaves you with this happy, satisfied grin, and the urge to do it all over again. The suspension helps, as do the chassis and the tyres, which are setup to return good dynamics but without any low speed harshness or discomfort.

Brakes though could do with more power and bite. They work fine at slow speeds but at higher speeds they do seem inadequate at times.

Hero Xtreme 160R Front Brake

As far as cruising goes, the Xtreme is happiest between 85-95kmph. At these speeds there are barely any vibrations, there’s enough torque in reserve to pull clean overtakes, and the brakes don’t feel overwhelmed either. the 160R can do over 100kmph all day long as well. and even though it isn’t at its smoothest best at these speeds, it’s still stable, manageable, and agreeable.

What’s more, the Xtreme offers comfortable seating ergos. Its rider seat height measures 790mm, which is a sweet spot for the average Indian. And then when you get astride, this big looking tank that has great knee recesses welcomes you. And having the extra bit of seat extending into the tank further adds to comfort. The footpegs are slightly rearset; the handlebar for my height (five-nine) is easy to reach. And it’s of a good width too allowing good leverage while steering.

Hero Xtreme 160R Action

Additionally, the bike tracks straight even at really slow speeds. It doesn’t flip-flop, so you don’t need to work the handle. Plus the clutch and throttle operation is light - though the clutch could have been lighter still.

We would have liked the low speed ride to be a bit more yielding as well. At higher speeds and over undulations and bumps, the 160R remains stable and poised. But at slower speeds, the rear does tend to kick about. So if you ride single more often, our suggestion would be reduce the preload to make it more comfortable. The front though feels wonderful no matter the speed or the surface.

Our Take

Hero Xtreme 160R Front

The Xtreme 160R is the best that Hero has produced so far. And we say that because it absolutely nails the fitness of purpose part. It is a bike meant and designed for the young, upcoming motorcyclist. And that segment of buyer wants a good looking, comfortable, and easy and fun to ride motorcycle that doesn’t cost the earth. The 160R ticks all those boxes.

Yes, it could do with some segment firsts. And a few cool, feel good features would have moved its ‘want’ factor up. But even now, in its current form, it feels so right, we would recommend it all and sundry without a moment's hesitation. And that in our book is a trait of a great motorcycle.

      1. Buying: Hassle-free. Loan approved in 2 days.
      2. Riding: Soft suspension makes city rides comfortable.
      3. Looks: Good
      4. Performance: Handling and Overtaking is not a problem. The only issue is beyond 80kmph, the bike struggles.
      5. Service: My bike fuel injector was faulty. Found after 15 days of purchase while going out of the station. However, got replaced freely.
Brake pads wear out very soon.
Pro: Best City commuter with good mileage.
Cons: Top-end performance is not good which affects highway experience.

If you're looking for a budget bike for travelling with wonderful looks you can go for this bike.
I took this bike for travelling by road to Nepal. I did off-roading with no problem with its power.
While off reading it gives you an average of 40kmpl. which is not bad at all. I travel a lot in Nepal from one to another city.

      Best in the Range

      Rohit Meghwal

      1. I bought this bike in November 2020 which time cost me 1.3 lakh on the road, the buying experience was quite smooth, and we did all the necessary paperwork and payment and got the bike on the same day from the showroom.
      2. At that time I was a beginner at bike riding but this bike riding experience was very good After someday I had some issues with the front tyre of my bike the bike's front tyre rim was defective, the front tyre had an air leak issue every 2-3 days front tyre air leak completely, after that I complained about this issue to the service center but they gave me a temporary solution, for this problem I went to the service center 10-12 times then they replaced my bike front tyre rim.
After that, my experience of riding to bike for my daily commute was very decent.
      3. Looks very attractive and sporty in this price range and segment and its performance is very good, you will get good performance in low and mid-RPM, and the bike struggles in high RPM but is overall good for short and mid-range rides. (no long ride experience with this bike)
Gear shifting was not smooth in this bike and this bike made more noise than RTR.
      4. The servicing cost is on the affordable side but the service center experience was horrible, I mentioned the service centre experience in point no. 2.
      5. Pros - looks 9/10
      performance 8/10
      riding experience 9/10
Cons - service centre experience -1000000000/10
gear shifting was not good at all
      little bit nosily

Maintaining your Hero Xtreme 160R is essential to ensure its longevity and optimal performance. Here are some maintenance tips for your Hero Xtreme: 1. Regular Servicing: Adhere to the recommended service schedule outlined in the owner's manual provided by Hero MotoCorp. Regular servicing helps in keeping the bike in top condition and prevents potential issues from arising. 2. Oil Change: Ensure timely oil changes according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Engine oil lubricates the engine components and helps maintain their longevity. Follow the recommended oil grade and type specified by Hero MotoCorp. 3. Check Fluid Levels: Regularly check and top up the levels of essential fluids such as engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid. Proper fluid levels are crucial for the smooth operation of various components. 4. Inspect Brakes: Periodically inspect the brake pads, discs, and brake fluid levels. Replace worn-out brake pads and discs promptly to maintain braking efficiency and safety. 5. Tire Maintenance: Check tire pressure regularly and maintain it at the recommended levels. Inspect tires for wear and tear, and replace them if the tread depth is insufficient or if there are signs of damage. 6. Cleanliness: Keep the bike clean and free from dirt, grime, and debris. A boy who regret his decision made and based on only looks.

See, the buying experience is okay, but not great after having the helmet with the bill we were forced to buy their helmet but I complained about it and resolved it. I believe Hero needs to work on Engine refinement and instrument cluster because there were not many features only basic features were there. The LED headlamp is fine but sometimes it feels like you need a clearer view and more broader LED range. The indicators are good. Fuel mileage is fine at ₹500 it runs around 1.5 weeks around 120-140km. I appreciate their exhaust pipe remains cool after driving 13km in traffic. I feel the exhaust node is very quiet nearly no base. Without a rear mudguard bike will get dirty after every rain. The front mud is not good engine area gets really dirty. Give you power mostly when you need it. I would say there is no pillion seat because it's not uncomfortable but dangerous to sit on a pillion because after grabbing the side grab rails also if the bike takes acceleration or front braking there is a chance the pillion can fall because there is no control over their after grabbing side grab rails. For the rider comfortable but initially, your pelvis touches with fuel tank which is uncomfortable my friend also said this.

      Tips for other riders

Tyre don't need daily air to fill like once in a month maybe sometimes twice. Synthetic Engine oil last around 4-5k. Difficult to wipe dust without getting a scratch on fuel tank. After rain ride whole bike become a mess front exhaust to Headlamp even shoes get dirt.
