Introduction

Maxxis has been in India for a while now, manufacturing tyres in India for a wide range of two wheelers. Scooters have been one of the largest selling two- wheelers in India and we decided to put to test Maxxis’ scooter range of tyres. Now before we get to the tyres, let’s look at what we are looking at when it comes to scooter tyres.

Now scooter tyres are available in popular sizes of 10-inch and 12-inch discounting the Aprilia SR150 which comes with 14-inch wheels. At 10 and 12-inches, scooter tyres are way smaller than motorcycle tyres and as a result, get a lot more affected by potholes. So having the right balance of cushioning and sidewall stiffness in a bid to better ride quality is important. Then there is the grip. With the city in a dug up state for most of the times, you have gravel, uneven surfaces, greasy surfaces and then some, so the tyres do have a lot to deal with. Then there’s the longevity. For the common man, scooter tyres have to last a lifetime, considering scooters are pressed into service for years together.

Maxxis claims they do know a lot about scooter tyres and promise excellent quality with specially formulated rubber compounds delivering excellent grip and wear. We decided to shod India’s most common scooter, the Honda Activa with the M6182 (front) and the M6305 (rear) tyres and put them to the test.

The sizes

Both the M6182 and the M6305 come in 10-inch sizes which means they will fit a wide range of scooters. The M6182 is available for front and rear in tubeless form, however we will be testing only the front for this range which comes in 90/100-10 with a J speed rating.

The M6305 is available only for the rear in the same 90/100-10 size and is tubeless as well.

The technology

According to Maxxis, the M6182 has an Ultra tread pattern and gets extra constructions to increase stability. The M6305 on the other hand gets an optimized nylon-ply construction for better durability.

Anything else I need to know?

The M6182 is a dual purpose tyre that can handle both on and off-road conditions and it is capable of sustained highway runs as well. Aggressive directional semi-lug tread pattern means the tyre aims to offer good straight line and cornering stability. The ultra-tread pattern aims to offer excellent wet performance too.

The M6305 gets a slightly knobby pattern. It gets extra-large grooves for excellent grip and traction under harsh road conditions. Also, the deeper tread grooves aim to channel more water away from the contact patch for better grip and provide better tyre life.

Next Update

The tyres will find their way on to a Honda Activa which then will be used under all kind of conditions to determine how impressive the Maxxis’ are. Keep watching this space for more.
