Introduction

I’m a big fan of things that let me be connected to the world while I’m riding. I was introduced to the helmet Bluetooth communication system a few years ago when I used the Sena 3S –a low cost system that was the most affordable from the company. It made my life very easy while on the saddle. Gone were the days where I had to stop the motorcycle every few kilometres to check if I had missed any important calls. With the Sena 3S, all I had to do is say ‘Hello’ and voila, I was connected.

Now the good folks at Sena India wanted us to try out the SMH5 – a mid-spec helmet Bluetooth communication system. The company feels there’s a huge market for this system especially with the new riders who have entered the world of 200cc-650cc segment. The SMH5 is claimed to be a compact, feature-rich and well-priced product.

Features

Let’s start with the intercom range. The SMH5 has a range of 400 metres and can connect with two different Sena riders but can interact with only one at a time. It has a talk time back up of seven hours, but in stand-by mode, the battery will last for seven days. It uses the Bluetooth v3.0 tech. The headset weighs 40gms, whereas the clamp weighs 38gms. The Sena SMH5 unit can be easily removed from the clamp. It takes around 2.5 hours to fully charge the SMH5.

Just like the other Sena units, the SMH5 features voice control prompts as well. All the rider has to do is say ‘Hello’ to receive a call. Other voice prompts like ‘Speed Dial’ and ‘Delete all pairings’ can be configured as well. The unit can be connected to stereo music with ease. The jog dial and the main button needs to be used to do this.
