KTM 390 Adventure Summary

Price: KTM 390 Adventure price for its variant - 390 Adventure Alloy Wheel is estimated at Rs. 3,39,355. The price for the other variant - 390 Adventure Spoke Wheel is Rs. 3,61,489. The mentioned 390 Adventure prices are the average ex-showroom.

KTM 390 Adventure is a adventure bike available in 2 variants and 2 colours. The KTM 390 Adventure is powered by 373.27cc BS6 engine which develops a power of 42.9 bhp and a torque of 37 Nm. With both front and rear disc brakes, KTM 390 Adventure comes up with anti-locking braking system. This 390 Adventure bike weighs 177 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 14.5 liters.

KTM India has launched the OBD2-compliant 390 Adventure in our market. The 2023 iteration of the adventure-tourer motorcycle receives the necessary hardware to comply with the newest emission norms. This variant of the motorcycle will be sold alongside the more-affordable 390 Adventure X in our market.

Notably, the styling cues remain unaltered, and the 2023 KTM 390 Adventure retains the split-style LED headlight, short windscreen, engine cowl, 14.5-litre fuel tank, split-style seats, side-slung exhaust, and 19-inch front and 17-inch rear alloy wheels. The standard version of the motorcycle is listed in two colours – Atlantic Blue and Dark Galvano Black.

Meanwhile, the mechanical specifications continue to include a 373.27cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-valve engine with a dual overhead camshaft. Linked to a six-speed gearbox, this motor delivers a maximum output of 42.9bhp at 9,000rpm and 37Nm of peak torque at 7,000rpm. This motor also powers the KTM 390 Adventure X.

Similar to the engine specifications, the hardware remains unaltered as well, and the 2023 KTM 390 Adventure range continues to use a steel trellis frame with a bolted sub-frame. The suspension tasks are handled by 43mm upside-down front forks and a preload-adjustable rear monoshock. The braking tasks are handled by a 320mm single disc with a radially-mounted calliper at the front and a 230mm single disc with a floating calliper at the rear.

The feature list on this model is more comprehensive than the 390 Adventure X. This variant of the 390 Adventure series uses full-LED lighting, dual-channel ABS with off-road mode, a slipper clutch, a 12V USB socket, a Bluetooth-enabled colour TFT display, a traction control system, riding modes, cornering ABS, ride-by-wire throttle, and a quick-shifter.

The KTM 390 Adventure range rivals the likes of the BMW G 310 GS in the Indian market.

Introduction

KTM 390 Adventure Front View

The KTM 390 Adventure debuted at the 2019 EICMA, and since then, it has allowed a lot of Indian riders to traverse the country and explore the wilderness. While most appreciated the bike's abilities, a few asked for more – like spoke wheels. As a result, KTM did get this part as an accessory, but in 2023, it realized it needed to offer a new variant from that factory to target a small set but focused buyers. In fact, KTM added the cherry on top by also equipping it with adjustable suspension. These additions should have made the motorcycle more potent and aspirational, and we spent an entire day with the spoke wheels variant and a few hours with the 390 Adventure X, the most affordable variant in the line-up.

The Visuals

KTM 390 Adventure Left Side View

Till now, the KTM 390 Adventure looked more like a tourer and less like an ADV. But now, it has managed to get the authentic ADV aesthetics, and the credit goes to that spoke wheels. These wheels were offered as an accessory, but KTM decided to bring them as a variant because of the good demand.

KTM 390 Adventure Front View

While the bike already had a tall stance, the motorcycle looks far more aspirational with these new additions. And when you combine this with the sleek front fascia that houses the LED lights and sharp bodywork, the motorcycle churns out a good road presence.

This particular variant gets the new orange paint scheme, and honestly, it reminds you of its Dakar bike.

The Package

KTM 390 Adventure TFT / Instrument Cluster

Regarding the features, the 390 Adventure Spoke Wheels bike has some great features. There is a bi-directional quick shifter that can be turned off. There's a switchable ABS, cornering ABS, traction control and ride-by-wire throttle.

KTM 390 Adventure Handle Bar

It also gets the same full-colour, Bluetooth-enabled TFT display that can be operated via the switchgear and a USB charging socket above the instrument cluster. The 390 Adventure also sports a full-LED headlight that provides powerful night illumination. The bike also gets spoke wheels and a fully adjustable suspension.

The Ride – 390 Adventure Spoke Wheels

KTM 390 Adventure Right Side View

The 373cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine on this bike remains unchanged. None of the power figures, the nature of the engine, and the NVH have changed. And as a result, a lot of off-roading frustration can also be seen on this bike. But we will talk about it in the later part of the review. Let's talk about how these numbers allow you to have a lot of fun.

KTM 390 Adventure Front View

Firstly, this motorcycle is fast, and with a light, super smooth throttle response, you tend to extract the maximum from that engine most of the time. While I was testing the bike on the famous Tamhini ghat, I could easily reach some fast speeds without any stress, and I kept doing this continuously for 4-5 hours. With its power delivery, this motor engages the rider. It spoils him because the sudden surge of delivery releases all the dopamine in the body, which means you keep wanting more. While I understand this engine is known for its poor low-down torque when you have butter-smooth tarmac with lots of twisties, you tend to put yourself and that Metzeler Tourance tyres to maximum test. But yes, in the city, where you must go through the frustration of riding slow with the traffic, you miss that torque spread. In fact, I stalled the bike multiple times due to it. But that light clutch and smooth gear shifts remove some of the hassles.Surprisingly, even with the hard riding during the test, the bike was churning almost 300 km of indicated riding range.

KTM 390 Adventure Front View

The 390 Adventure is like the 390 Duke but with a different suspension and some attitude. Such things as the main frame, engine, and electronics have made this ADV a fantastic choice to climb some twisties and do some high-speed touring. The excellent chassis, powerful engine and seat ergonomics have made this KTM a great motorcycle. And there that Metzeler Tourance tyres that offer superior grip on the tarmac – be it in dry or wet conditions. But now, with the adjustable suspension, this 390 Adventure has taken fun to a different level. With full compression, rebound and preload adjustment, the bike behaves differently depending on the damping. Increase the compression and rebound damping; you will flow through corners well. Decrease the damping, and you will ride through bad roads without drama. During my six hours of road riding, I played with multiple settings and finally increased the compression damping to 22 clicks and rebound to 11. Here, I got a ride quality that was apt enough to ride through the beautiful Tamhini ghat and take care of some uneven roads.

KTM 390 Adventure Front View

Now when it comes to off-road, this particular variant handles and behaves much better than the standard variants. Firstly, with the preload adjustment, you can ensure the motorcycle doesn't bottom out in jumps. Secondly, when you want to ride the bike relatively fast off-road, and you want the springs to rebound faster for better stability, the rebound adjustment at the front and the rear can be tuned based on the dirt track conditions. I did increase the damping for compression and rebound to almost 90 per cent of the available settings, but that was way too much for me to handle the bike at such terrains.

KTM 390 Adventure Rear View

But regarding braking, this 390 ADV was a bit of a disappointment. On the road, the front brake lacks the power and the bite. It also lacks the feel. The front brake works well when you are doing 80-90kmph, but when the speed gets higher, it doesn't do its job as it should. When you give a bike a 43bhp engine, you are supposed to provide excellent brakes, at least at the front.

The Ride - 390 Adventure X

KTM 390 Adventure Front View

Two hours with Adventure X has given us some excellent insights. Now you know this bike misses out on traction control, fully colour TFT and cornering ABS, but I didn't think I would still like this bike without these features. In fact, it reached a point where I would prefer this variant over everything else for an off-road rider like me. I still have that engine, that stock suspension and the same frame, and these are the basic things for me to ride off-road.

KTM 390 Adventure Front View

I always ride off-road with ABS and TC off to get most of the control, which was happening with this bike. I wasn't wasting time switching off this tech, nor was I regretting not buying the top-spec variant because there's an extra 60k involved. And who needs a quick-shifter to ride off-road? It may be a requirement while touring on the highways, but when was the last time you saw someone riding from Mumbai to Goa at full throttle? So the Adventure X makes a lot of sense, and I won't be surprised to see this variant becoming the highest-selling one for KTM.

Should you buy it?

KTM 390 Adventure Front View

The 390 Adventure Spoke Wheels checks a lot of the right boxes. The motorcycle offers good performance and comfort. It also provides many valuable features for Indian road conditions, and now, with the adjustable suspension, the bike has become far more customizable for riders. This feature allows riders to find the perfect road and off-road settings, giving them more control over the kind of fun and excitement they want. However, such riders are in low numbers, so this variant may not set the sales chart on fire. But the 390 Adventure X could.

KTM 390 Adventure Front View

The 390 Adventure X is a whopping Rs 60,000 cheaper than the top-spec variant, and this has allowed many Indian riders to dream of a powerful, comfortable bike that belongs to a brand with excellent travel brand recall. In fact, the 390 Adventure X has the majority of the things needed to explore the country and, to be honest, it offers excellent value.

Brought SW version for long-distance touring. Will rate the buying experience as average from the KTM dealership since they just only want to get the bike sold to the customer at any cost to achieve their sales target.
Coming to the bike, need to keep the engine above 2000 rpm to avoid the bike getting stalled which has happened multiple times for me, post 4000 rpm it is very smooth for a single cylinder. Suspension and tire gave me good confidence to trash bike on bad roads and it did a really good job.
Quickshifter is useless and I completely avoid using it. The bike gets Bluetooth connectivity but the KTM app for turn-by-turn navigation is not available on PlayStore so that's also of no use, you can only connect your phone for caller identification.
Seat height might make most of us opt for a lower seat variant, I'm 5.11 and it works well for me but while riding standing up, felt the need for handlebar risers as stock height is very low for standing-up riding, and there no way you can grip fuel tank with legs which takes confidence.
Braking performance is good and has a good feel and feedback along with the Metzeler tire, even on wet surfaces it offered good grip and confidence. The only concern is fear of puncture due to the spoked wheel with tube, would have been great if they had offered a tubeless spoked wheel.
Kept the bike in stock condition and didn't add extra weight by putting in aftermarket crash guards. Did install Barkbuster handguards as I did not like the stock flimsy handguards and also replaced stock mirrors with Double Take mirrors.

Well it has been an amazing experience to own this fabulous machine from KTM and I have used it for different scenarios like offroading which is more or less good and highway touring is the best as you can cruise 110-120 effortlessly on this bike. I was able to achieve a maximum mileage of 31 in the city if you try to keep it under 6000 RPM which this bike teases you not to and on highways I was able to get a maximum mileage of 36 to 37. I am happy with my bike it has got everything I need which is touring, some offroading, and also for my daily commute as well and it has been spot on to the date.

The bike you want to buy

      Chandan Das

It's an overall good bike. The seat comfort for long trips is not so good. I can say it's a good tour but less adventure. The TFT screen is excellent. This is not a bike for short-height or lightweight riders. It's more than what meets the eye. I will recommend the Adventure 390 Y for the short-height riders it has the same features as the Adventure 390.

A very best and beautiful bike

I think Ktm ADV 390 is a little more expensive but once you buy this bike you will be happy.
Once I start the riding seat so comfortable and I enjoy the ride.
Suspension is so good in this bike we have 3 types of riding modes. I think bike servicing and maintenance cost is very high.
The bike mileage is very low it gives 28 km this is the only disadvantage of this bike.

I have KTM 390 adventure Alloy Wheels model, this Bike is very comfortable while riding in traffic and long ride as well. My boss has this bike and rides it multiple times for testing and I liked it most as compared to other adventure bikes, my office mate also has other brand of adventure bikes but I felt that this is the right bike for me.

      Tips for other riders

My first choice was spoke wheel but when I got know that it has tube with spokes. thn I changed my mind and buy alloy wheels because it is good for long ride and adventure ride. As all of you know that bike weight is high so when it goes puncture you can not move the bike too long distance and it will effect on complete tyre and can be damaged, so it could be more costly as compare single puncture cost. So I would suggest go with Alloy wheels models only.

Comparisons of the 4 best adventure motorcyles. Royal enfield himalayan ktm adventure 390 bmw g 310 gs hero xpulse 200 4v

      Rakshith

I am very glad to write a review about my very first own bike. And for that, i had multiple options in my head.
      1. Royal enfield himalayan
      2. Ktm Adventure 390
      3. Bmw g 310 gs
      4. Xpulse 200 4v
After lots of research and findings, here's my conclusion:
      1. Royal enfield himalayan ->
      • excellent off-roader,
      • spoke wheels and smoother suspension,
      • perfect ergonomics,
      • responsive low and mid-range
This adventure bike the comparatively lower seat height (800mm) , can't do justice for short riders yet is reachable to medium heights. Coming to the downside of this bike,
      • it lacks power and touring capabilities,
      • misses out in the high range.
      • having packed up with 411cc, +5 bhp / +5 torque is expected.
But overall, it's value for money and a great bike.
      2. Ktm adventure 390 -> beast! performance. Single cylinder, 373.27 cc, and delivers almost 43 bhp is the power of Austrian engineering. Because of its unmatched performance in the BMW!!! that's a head-turning brand. You can easily tell this is a premium super-bike for people who do not have much knowledge with respect to bikes, as this bike looks very premium.
      • it has wide tires front: 110/80 - r19 rear: 150/70 - r17. Makes it look huge when compared with the other 3 bikes.
      • the typical BMW colors go very well with the body and if the design is your no.1 priority, this will be your excellent choice (can be subjective too).
Enough just about the looks, because that's the only good thing I found in this machine, as it is powered by the same TV's apache rr 310 engine tuned for adventure riding.
      • not as punchy and responsive as KTM, but good enough engine.
      • the suspension is softer and not confident while bending into the corners.
      • also do not come with much electronics, just dual channel abs, and poor digital display.
      • as it is a BMW ₹₹₹ on-road cost, servicing, spare parts, etc. Are on the expensive side.
**owner’s review: first service cost was ₹5500 @ 1000 km, second was ₹8000 @ 10000 km, & upcoming third will be around ₹15000 @ 20000 km. Done a regular service & chain replacement @ 15000 km for ₹8000. Now I must change the front fork oil seal and oil with a third service, which will cost ₹3800. I have changed the back brake pads twice & front brake pad once, which costs me a total of ₹6000. I have spent a total amount of ₹46300 for 20000 km/ for two years as maintenance cost. I think it is a very big amount for a 300 cc single-cylinder motorcycle.**
      4. Hero xpulse 200 4v -> the most value for money motorcycle to my eyes, worth <2lakhs and the best off-roader. Best suspension with long travel front: cartridge type (dia 37mm) with adjustable compression and rebound damping rear: rectangular swingarm with 10-step preload adjustable mono-shock (for pro model).
      • because of its lightweight 161kg (kerb weight), off-roading gets a lot easier.
      • spoke wheels, long travel suspension, asks for more and more bad roads and no roads!
      • 40kmpl is a bonus, providing around 500kms range for a full tank of petrol.
      Now for the downside—
      • 18.9 bhp is very boring on the highways and struggles even on 100 km. Cannot munch on the miles, but fun on off-roads.
      • brakes could have been better
To simplify this whole review, if you require a:
      Off-roader = hero xpulse 200 4v
Best design = BMWg 310 gs (again subjective)
      Best performance/electronics = KTM 390 adventure
Decent class adventure = royal enfield himalayan
Hope this review is helpful for you and lets you choose your perfect motorcycle!
