BMW F850 GS is a adventure bike available in 2 variants and 3 colours. The BMW F850 GS is powered by 853cc BS6 engine which develops a power of 93.87 bhp and a torque of 92 Nm. With both front and rear disc brakes, BMW F850 GS comes up with anti-locking braking system. This F850 GS bike weighs 233 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 15 liters.

The BMW F850 GS Adventure, like its name suggests, is based on the F850 GS. And the Adventure suffix is not there for branding purposes. It gets more features that makes it off-road ready.

The F850 GS Adventure follows a styling similar to the F850 GS although with redesigned bodywork. The front ‘beak’ is wider and the bike also sports wind deflectors, a tall-windscreen, redesigned radiator shrouds along with a larger luggage rack and engine guard. Furthermore, BMW has equipped the F850 GS Adventure with a 23-litre fuel tank that is eight litres bigger than the unit on the standard bike. The weight of the bike has also increased and it has a kerb weight of 244kg; 15kg heavier than the F850 GS.

The motorcycle rides on spoke wheels; a 21-inch front and 17-inch rear shod with dual-purpose rubber. The suspension hardware on the F850 GS Adventure has been tuned to offer more travel. While the inverted forks have 230mm of travel, the monoshock at the rear offer 215mm of suspension travel. There is no difference in terms of powertrain and the F850 GS Adventure is powered by the same 853cc, liquid-cooled parallel-twin motor as the F850 GS. This unit churns out 95bhp of power and 92Nm of torque and comes mated to a six-speed gearbox.

In terms of its electronics, the F850 GS Adventure comes with ABS, ASC (Automatic Stability Control), traction control and two riding modes. The motorcycle also gets a 6.5-inch Bluetooth enabled TFT display and LED lighting for the tail lamp, headlamp and turn signals.

The F850 GSA is available in Triple Black and a Light White colour. And just like the standard F850, the GSA variant’s 40 Years Edition has been discontinued for 2022. Even the Black Storm Metallic and Ice Grey colour has been removed.

As for competition, the BMW F850 GS Adventure competes against the Triumph Tiger 900 Rally and the Honda Africa Twin in India.

BMW F850 GS Review

  • Good Things

    • Peppy mid and top end acceleration
    • Absorbs road undulations with ease
    • Priced quite aggressively
  • Could be Better

    • Expensive to maintain
    • Limited sales, service reach

BikeWale's Take

The BMW F850 GS is a near-perfect adventure tourer which makes its premium price tag look justified. While the worst of terrains can be conquered on it with ease, it can also be a great companion while munching miles. That is courtesy the bike’s potent motor, premium set of hardware and a long list of electronic aids.

      A trusted machine

      Rohit Bhojaraj

After 25 years, I went back to riding a motorcycle. I have a honda highness 350 for my regular commute and was exploring an adventure bike for long tours. I researched all adventure bikes starting from 500cc, 650cc, 800-900cc, 1000cc, and 1200-1250cc bikes. My riding needs are 90% on-road and occasional offroad. I don't ride higher than 110kp/h and most of the time ride at 95-100km/h.
Keeping the above in mind, I chose BMW F850 GS. The ride height was high for me (175cm), so opted for a low seat seat from the showroom. This brings the height to 820mm and it is perfect. The bike is just awesome. Plush ride, adequate power, and good fuel economy. The bike's weight is high, but we have to manage it by making some changes to our driving habits.
I have done over 8000 kms on the bike and really love it.

      Dream purchase

      Blublood

Purchased the coveted 850gs after 3 years of dreaming about it. The default seat presents a bit of a challenge to me at 175cm. The ride so far has been excellent albeit the weight does show considerably on climbs and challenging terrains.
Overall a great buy considering the competition is almost 3l higher on road.
      Overall extremely happy owner.
