Mahindra Two Wheelers recently announced their plan of collaborating with Peugeot scooters - one of the oldest scooter brands from France. They did not disclose any information about products that might be launched for the Indian market, but some of the Peugeot scooters have already been brought to India.
The product portfolio of Peugeot scooters includes a wide range of two-wheelers ranging from 50cc to 400cc. These include scooters like Django classic, Kisbee, Speedfight 3, Street Zone, Satelis, Citystar, e-Vivacity, a three-wheeler Metropolis etc. It would be a good step if Mahindra-Peugeot plan to introduce some of these scooters in India as consumers will get more options to choose from. Currently, Vespa is the only premium scooter sold in our country.
The pictures at Mahindra’s facility reveal that the Satelis, StreetZone, CityStar150 and Speedfight 3 have been brought to the Indian soil. While the Peugeot Satelis is powered by a four-stroke 125cc engine, the Streetzone is powered by a 50cc, two-stroke air cooled engine. The CityStar150’s engine is a 150cc motor and the Speedfight is powered by a horizontal two-stroke 50cc engine. All these engine options come mated to an automatic transmission.
Peugeot scooters are present in the European market since such a long time that their presence can be dated back to almost 116 years. Mahindra will not completely take over Peugeot but hold a 51 per cent stake in the company. The merger might function in a similar fashion like the Mahindra-Ssangyong association. Since the companies are expected to function under independent names, there will also be no Mahindra-Peugeot branding on the products.
