Harley-Davidson X440 Summary

Price: Harley-Davidson X440 price for its variant - X440 Denim is estimated at Rs. 2,39,500. The price for the other variants - X440 Vivid and X440 S are Rs. 2,59,500 and Rs. 2,79,500. The mentioned X440 prices are the average ex-showroom.

Harley-Davidson X440 is a cruiser bike available in 3 variants and 4 colours. The Harley-Davidson X440 is powered by 440cc BS6 engine which develops a power of 27 bhp and a torque of 38 Nm. With both front and rear disc brakes, Harley-Davidson X440 comes up with anti-locking braking system. This X440 bike weighs 190.5 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 13.5 liters.

Harley-Davidson India has announced the launch of its most affordable motorcycle, the X440. The motorcycle is available in three variants. The base model uses single-tone paint and comes with wire-spoke wheels. Then, the mid version gets alloy wheels and a dual-tone finish. The top-spec model comes loaded with premium features such as diamond-cut alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, and 3D logos. The Bluetooth module brings the turn-by-turn navigation function to the top model.

Meanwhile, the styling cues across the range include a round headlight with integrated Harley-Davidson branding, a single-pod instrument cluster, a flat handlebar, a side-slung exhaust, machined alloy wheels, and retro-style round indicators.

Then, the new Harley-Davidson X440 uses a 440cc, single-cylinder, oil and air-cooled engine with a two-valve setup that makes a maximum output of 27bhp at 6,000rpm and 38Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm.

The motorcycle is built around a trellis frame, and it uses 43mm upside-down front forks and gas-charged, preload-adjustable twin rear shocks to handle the suspension duties. The braking tasks are handled by single disc brakes on both wheels, while the safety net comprises a dual-channel ABS and a side-stand engine cut-off function.

Harley-Davidson X440 Review

  • Good Things

    • Handles really well
    • Comfortable ergonomics
    • 440cc engine has good mid-range performance
  • Could be Better

    • Fit and finish could have been better
    • Engine vibrations could have been lesser

BikeWale's Take

The X 440 is the most affordable Harley-Davidson one can buy in India. It is equipped with a new 440cc engine that churns out good performance and also gets some modern features like LED lights and fully digital instrument cluster. Plus, the bike is really fun to ride. But it lacks good overall fit and finish also churns out vibrations when the engine is at its mid-range.

Harley-Davidson X440 Expert Opinion

Meet the first-ever motorcycle to come out of the Harely-Hero collab. It is not just a worthy effort, it is a motorcycle capable of giving the likes of Royal Enfield 350cc bikes - and the new Triumph Street 400 - a few restless nights. We say that because not only is the Harley-Davidson X440 well-priced, it is an impressive motorcycle on the road too. Here's our take on the bike after spending a couple of hours riding it at Hero’s R&D centre in Jaipur.

Introduction

Harley-Davidson X440 Right Front Three Quarter

Meet the first-ever motorcycle to come out of the Harley-Hero collab.

The Visuals

Harley-Davidson X440 Left Front Three Quarter

The X440 is a reasonably large motorcycle. It is longer, and it sits on a longer wheelbase, compared to its main rival - the Classic 350. In fact, Hero and Harley have so closely benchmarked the Classic that the X440 has the exact same seat height, ground clearance and front suspension travel. The X440 is however slightly lighter.

In terms of design, the X draws cues from Harley’s own XR 1200, somewhat. As a result, the Harley connection is more than obvious. And if it wasn't, there are over 12 logos all around the bike to remind you of that. The 440 is a good looking motorcycle; well-proportioned and easy on the eye. The attention to detail at places is well-executed, and unless you pick and prod, it comes across as a motorcycle that's been well put-together.

Harley-Davidson X440 Head Light

If you do pick and prod, however, some inconsistencies come to the fore. The matte plastic between the instrumentation and headlamp looks and feels flimsy. The finish around the frame in places is poor. And the shut lines between panels could be more consistent. I am also not a fan of the horizontal bar connecting the two downtubes of the trellis frame. It is needed to give the chassis higher stiffness, but the way it obstructs the view of the engine makes it seem like an after thought.

The Package

Harley-Davidson X440 Engine From Left

The Harley X440 is a mixed bag of modernity and old-school approach when it comes to mechanicals. The engine is an air- and oil-cooled, single-cylinder, long-stroke thumper. It displaces 440cc and puts out 27bhp and 38Nm of torque. Both these figures are significantly higher than the Royal Enfield Classic 350.  It is a simple engine but it is mated to a six-speed gearbox to give it added flexibility.

The chassis is a trellis frame that uses the engine as a stressed member. It’s not the best-looking trellis frame we have been, but Harley and Hero's engineers say, the focus was on function more than form. This is a more modern take on a frame, nonetheless, which is good to see.

Harley-Davidson X440 Front Suspension

The suspension layout is a mixed bag again. The front uses 43mm KYB upside-down forks for lesser upsprung mass and keener responses. But, the rear doesn't use a monoshock. Instead it uses a conventional twin shock layout with gas-charged dampers.

The braking setup expectedly employs a 320mm single disc up front with a twin-pot calliper, while the rear uses a smaller 240mm disc with a single-piston calliper. What’s more, dual-channel ABS is offered as standard on the X440.

Harley-Davidson X440 TFT / Instrument Cluster

The 440 is available in three trims, and all three trims also get Bluetooth connectivity that helps you with music control, turn-by-turn navigation, and call alerts. The top-spec trim however gets a full suite of connectivity options via the Harley Davidson app. It uses an e-sim which allows for functionalities like locating a dealer, booking a service, or calling for road-side assistance. It gets geo-fencing, theft alert, SOS, and one can also immobilise the bike via the app.

The Ride

Harley-Davidson X440 Front View

Before we rode the X440, we thought its aggressive pricing would be its key differentiator. But, we were wrong. Because, the way the motorcycle rides and feels gives it a very distinct and likeable aura.

The engine is a long-stroke unit. Not surprisingly then, it packs in handsome amounts of low and mid-range torque. This makes the 440 feel alive and willing and easy to ride. But it’s not a lazy engine. So, it likes to rev and it doesn't mind hitting its limiter at 7,000rpm quickly and repeatedly.

Harley-Davidson X440 Left Side View

The throttle response is crisp, the gear ratios are well spread, and it is picks up seamlessly - and potently - from as low as 2,000rpm making it properly tractable. It also sounds good when you open the throttle at low rpms with the exhaust note sounding brawny and sweet at the same time.

In terms of refinement, the new 440cc could be a bit quieter. It could also do with lesser vibes post 4,500rpm. Not that the vibes will leave you with buzzy hands within 30 minutes of riding, but given how smooth it feels under 4,000rpm, the same could have been translated in the mid-range too. Now if you choose to ride at 90kmph in sixth gear, the bike is at its sweet spot and makes for a fatigue-free riding experience. In fact, at 100kmph in sixth, even though there are some vibes that can be felt on the handlebar, seat and footpegs, these aren't pronounced enough to cause concern. So in that sense, the X440’s powertrain should help the bike’s touring abilities if you choose to stick to speed limits.

Harley-Davidson X440 Rear View

The X440’s highlight, however, is its dynamic ability. Now, we only rode the bike inside CIT, so we can't really comment on its ride quality. Handling wise, though, it did pleasantly surprise us. The function-over-form approach for the chassis, the USD forks upfront, and the tyres, make for a predictable, friendly, and exciting combo come a series of corners.

The X440 flows into corners, tracks true when leaned over, and even with the 18-inch front tyre, 190kg of wet weight, and the long wheelbase, it handles quick direction changes like a boss. It doesn't weave or squirm or slip or slide, it just stands up and drops onto the other side till you start scraping the footpegs.

Harley-Davidson X440 Front Disc Brake

The brakes are good too. These offer a strong bite, good progression, and have the ability to overwhelm the tyres quite easily. I do wish the travel for the front brake lever wasn’t as much to catch your gloved finger between the lever and the handlebar grip when you squeeze the lever fully.

Should you buy it?

Harley-Davidson X440 Right Rear Three Quarter

The Harley Davidson X440 should certainly be on your wish list. And here’s why...

First, there’s the price. At Rs. 2.29 lakh, ex-showroom for the base version, the X440 is superb value. It has the ‘Harely-Davidson’ tag. It has good road presence. And it will come with a slew of lifestyle add-ons soon.

Harley-Davidson X440 Left Side View

Even on the road, the X440 is an impressive motorcycle. It has comfy ergos. The controls - especially the clutch - are light to use. The engine might not be the most refined we have experienced, but it’s peppy, torquey and enjoyable. The handling is predictable and involving. The grip and bite offered by both the tyres and the brakes urges one to ride harder than needed! And it’s not short on features either.

Not everything is great, of course. It could do with some quality improvements in terms of look and feel. The vibrations, especially in the mid-range, could be lesser. But, here is the thing - neither is big or significant enough to affect the buying decision. Not at this price.

Harley Davidson X440 Elegance: Where Performance Meets the Open Road

      Subham Bhattacharjee

      1. Buying Experience: Let's talk about this first. I purchased this bike from Hero showroom as they were very prompt to fully set up this bike within 2 hours. I went for the test drive and ended up purchasing this bike over Trimuph's scrambler 400 X. This bike was in the second position on my list after Trimuph's scrambler.
      2. Riding Experience: I have never ridden a higher CC bike before. I have been riding Discover for almost 10 years now last year I switched to this beautiful machine. When I test rode for the first time I noticed the seat height was much higher and the bike bulky though while riding I didn't feel anything. In the city 3rd gear was sufficient for comfortable riding with pillion no problem whatsoever. When I hit the highway then the bike showed its true potential. I was crushing at around 110 to 115 Kmph without any vibration. The brakes were right on the money. So all in all I ended up purchasing this bike on the same day of the test drive.
      3. Looks & Performance: The look of the bike also caught my attention for the very first time. I choose this one over the Triumph Scrambler 400 X because of its dual suspension mechanism. Looks super premium all the buttons, and parts are of very good quality. Performance is top-notch I don't know about others but I am in total love with its lower-end power so smooth and gentle to new riders who are switching from lower CC bikes.
      4. Service & Maintenance:
On the first service at Hero service center, I paid around 3000 rupees including an oil filter change and engine oil change. Service persons were really excited after having a look at the bike. The manager of the center tested the bike as well and was quite impressed.
Now about Pros and Cons of this Bike
      1. Lower-end torque and power are mind-blowing.
      2. Looks so good and bulky.
      3. Quality of switches, mirrors, Headlight everything is top notched.
      4. Mileage is also decent compared to other bikes in the same segment.
      5. Wide pillion seat.
      Cons:
      1. Hated the side stand. This is the only which I hated about the bike. However, I have changed to some other brand side stand.
      2. Horn quality is another thing that also I hated the most. Like seriously spent almost 3.5 lakhs to get a horn of Hero Honda splendor.
      3. Switching between gears 1 and 2 is very hard sometimes. However, the service person advised that it would be smoother over time.
      4. Sometimes the emergency SOS button doesn't work and takes quite a few attempts to send out emergency notifications to my dad and brother.
So to conclude the review I would really love it if Harley Davidson changed the side stand and installed a good quality sturdy side stand and a good quality horn. If any guy reading this and thinking whether he or she should invest their hard-earned money or not I will suggest just visiting the nearest Harley Davidson showroom or Hero Showroom and giving a test drive for at least 5 to 6 KM. Trust me guys you will not regret. See ya.

It's an amazing bike to ride, I am so happy for the owner of a Harley Davidson x 440 and its feeling is so far better than the Royal Enfield Classic 350, the bike looks a beast and has modern retro and riding feel is just wow, overall my experience is very good and good time spend with my beast bike.

Initial torque and rideability are best in class, has a wide band of torque output so that you don't have to change gears too frequently, and overtaking on a highway becomes easy city maneuverability is so easy peasy that you don't feel the weight of such a heavy machine you will just forget everything the moment you start riding. The only cons I think is heros lack of effort in making extra accessories

Nice bike. Great pickup and heavy traffic drivability. Few quality issues are there with the first batch. Hope things will improve in future production batches. Overall good bike. Will suggest a base model or Vivid. No meaning in spending 40000 extra for the top model. I regret not considering a vivid model while making a purchase.

It is good for us also part of the journey. The X440’s design has some typical Harley-Davidson elements, but it’s a modern take alright, with its wide handlebars, LED headlight and rather different design elements. The fuel tank, side panels and seat blend angular modern elements, yet retain the typical Harley-Davidson signature, with the design a definite inspiration of the old XR1200.
