Honda Activa 5G Summary

It may be the highest-selling two-wheeler in the Indian market, but Honda hasn’t stopped the evolution of the Activa. The latest set of updates that make up the 5G are more than merely cosmetic. The front apron gets chrome accents, but the LED headlamp will draw your attention first. The top-spec Deluxe variant even gets a digital display below the analogue speedometer; it now shows the fuel gauge, odometer and trip meter and a clock in the digital part of the instrument cluster. The Activa 5G also gets the new ignition key slot from the Grazia, which has the provision for the seat release. The brand has also introduced a limited edition model that get aesthetic updates which include black rims, chrome exhaust cover and a black-out engine.

At the heart of the Activa 5G is the same 109cc engine which delivers 8bhp and 8.8Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a CVT transmission. It still rides on the archaic trailing-link front suspension and a rear monoshock. The brake setup consists of drum units at both ends with a combi braking system being offered as standard. A disc brake is not offered, even as an option.

The Activa 5G is available in eight paint schemes – blue, white, red, silver, black, grey-brown and yellow. Meanwhile, the limited edition variant gets two colour schemes -- white with silver and silver with black. The Honda Activa 5G shares the market space with the TVS Jupiter, Hero Maestro Edge and the Yamaha Fascino.

BikeWale's Take

The Activa 5G is the highest selling scooter in India for a reason. The combination of smooth and reliable engine and strong brand value makes this scooter the perfect choice for an Indian family. However, it misses out on some modern features which is seen on other 110cc scooters.

Honda Activa 5G Expert Opinion

While the Activa could snicker at the young buds with its near three lakh a month sales figure, it also needed to be in par with the crowd. So here in its fifth generation is the Activa 5G.

Introduction

Pros: Reliable, highly fuel-efficient, great brand value.

Cons: Dated design and suspension setup, lack of features.

The current generation of scooters boast of all kinds of gizmos and hoo-haas to appeal to the current lot of consumers i.e. tech savvy youngsters. While the Honda Activa could snicker at the young buds with its near three lakh a month sales figure, it also needed to be in par with the crowd.

So here in its fifth generation is the Activa 5G. It looks no different than its previous counterpart, save the front end. After all, the nine year-old design has seemed to work perfectly for Honda. And as they say, if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it!

Quality

The Activa 5G gets a full-LED headlamp along with chrome strips on the front apron. While you might not notice the chrome, the bright LED headlamp sure is attention grabbing as much as it is useful. It offers good projection and visibility even when not on high beam. And that’s about it if you opt for the standard version. On the DLX variant, in addition to the analogue speedometer you get a small digital unit, similar to that on the Grazia. One of the highest selling points of the Activa is its metal body, the finish of which is top notch.

The plastic used on the steering unit and mirror is also superior however the black-finish is susceptible to fading, a concern even in the previous models. The switches feel tacky and require a wee bit of effort to operate.

Comfort

The Activa offers a neutral riding position credit to its flat and large floorboard. And while the seat may not be long, it is well cushioned and wide enough even for the heftier riders. The scooter gets a metal footboard as standard for a side saddled pillion.

While the Activa is well behaved on good patches of road, the dated suspension setup cuts short the experience on the weathered parts. The scooter continues to use the trailing link suspension it started with 18 years ago! Although dated, the setup is indestructible, much like Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet. It will also amuse you with a swing movement when the front brakes are applied.

And if you contest me about the pricing, the Aviator costs nearly the same and gets telescopic front forks! Rants apart, the Activa has decent utilitarian features like an 18-litre under seat storage accessed using the seat opening switch besides the four-in-one ignition lock in the front. It also gets a hook on the front apron and under the edge of the seat.

Performance

The Activa’s 109cc engine screams refinement like all other Hondas. The scooter seems undaunted even when threatened to go full-throttle, until it hits the 90kmph mark. That’s when you start to feel the grittiness of the otherwise butter-like smooth motor. The 8bhp and 9Nm producing engine is peppy too. The Activa was quick to pull away during our performance test even with a larger rider on board.

With a kerb weight of 109kg, the Activa isn’t a light scooter, sitting under the TVS Ntorq 125 which weighs 116kg. Complement the weight with the peppy 109cc engine and the Activa feels sturdy and a pleasure to ride in heavy traffic conditions and on the highway. Honda offers the Activa with drum brakes even on the highest variant, although it does get a combined braking system (CBS) as standard. While the CBS has an excellent bite, it tends to fade after prolonged use. The scooter could surely do better with a front disc brake, but that will only happen after it gets telescopic front forks.

Technology

The robotic-looking full-LED headlamp plays a huge role in the appeal of the Activa 5G. The scooter’s analogue speedometer gets a white backlit needle which looks neat. Whereas, the digital display has a clock, fuel gauge, single trip meter and odometer along with an ECO indicator that lights up in the 40-60kmph range.

Fuel Efficiency

The Activa 5G benefits from the Honda Eco Technology (HET) which the company claims to boost efficiency. It returned an impressive 60kmpl on our test cycle. And with a 5.3-litre fuel tank, the Activa has a sufficient range of 318kms.

Fitness of purpose

The Activa was always meant to be a reliable family scooter. With the 5G, Honda has modernized the scooter, making it appealing even to the younger audience. Even with lesser features and a price tag equivalent to its competitors, the Activa continues to be the highest selling 110cc scooter in India.

Our take

The Honda Activa 5G retains the legacy of its previous counterparts in terms of reliability and brand value. While the design sure is dated, it has a widely appealing no-nonsense character. The Activa however, could do with a better braking and suspension setup which turns out to be the only drawback in performance. All-in-all the Activa 5G upholds its reputation of being a rugged scooter. Additionally it would also attract more Indian consumers with its answer to ‘Kitna deti hain?’

THE SCOOTER IS BETTER FOR DAILY USERS WHO HAVE DAILY RUNNING OF 20-25 KM. THE AVERAGE MILAGE OF A SCOOTER IS 42KMPL. MANITANCE CHANGE IS MODERATE. AND THE SUSPENSION OF THIS SCOOTER IS MUCH BETTER, ALSO NOISE IS LESS, SEAT COMFORT IS GOOD, FOR LONG TRAVELING IT IS NOT GOOD DUE TO MILEAGE AND TRAVELL COMFORT.

      A superb scooty

      Punit

So this activa 5g is changed my life. I purchased this scooty in march 2019 just before covid. It have a good powerful engine and good battery backup which give me more independence and helps me to move around without any worries for the further future. This is my first scooty so
I purchased activa 5g in march 2019... I was hugely excited about having a covid scooty. Let's talk about the specifications and positive and negative parts of this scooty.
Activa 5g is having a powerful engine... I hope that it will be starting on the first try.
This vehicle is having some pros and cons as every other motorbike, but here I am listing down only the pros:-
      1. Powerful engine (best option for 1st timers)
      2. Good battery backup (better than any other scooty in this segment)
      3. Good mileage, with the perfect accessories on it.
      4. Easy riding style, ...Now after going through the 1530km in a month I'm feeling more comfortable than ever, and of course, it goes well on road... We are not talking about any highways here but yes it's enough for a first-time user like me who has never gone for such long-distance rides before.
      Cons:-
      - narrow tyre , so keep attention during turning
      - you may feel weak performance during acceleration.. ( but it will only apply when you are a bike lover
And rather than this I can't find any cons.
      Conclusion
The driving experience is best in class. The engine doesn't make plenty of noise. Looks-wise very good.
Now let's talk about servicing experience I have done 3 services till now and each and every time it's just super.. ( one advice here just chose your dealer very wisely then you will get the best servicing and maintenance experience and a smooth buying experience).
After all, I would suggest that and everything is very very nice and good.. If this is the first vehicle in your family so go for it. It's just superb and worth it each penny.

      Good scooter with worst mileage

      Subhransu Sekhar Sahu

Buying experience:- my buying experience was good because of its dealer. I bought it 4 years back when the honda activa 5g launched i picked this bike because I was impressed with its early versions like 3g, and previous versions. Actually, i heard that it's a good scooter and it was popular at that time.
Riding experience:- riding experience is actually superb. This is my daily commuter scooter. So i ride it every day. The main problem is every day u will have to start this scooter with kick start cause its self-start is maybe worst than all company's scooters. I thought maybe its my battery issue but i changed my battery after that also it's the same as before. Every day if u are traveling 20-25km this is the best scooter if u are not that concerned about mileage.
Every year 2-3 times i ride about 90-100 km in a single day with my father and i would say riding a little bit-long journey with a pillion is suitable till 70 km after that u kind of feel pain so keep that in mind. But i can say best scooter for the pillion.
About looks, and performance:- i have already written at the top about performance once the scooter is starting it's unstoppable but u will have to do a lot of hard work to get it started. If it's a rainy season or winter season then plan at least 15 minutes to start the scooter. And eat something heavier before going to start this scooter cause u will have to start it through kick start only.
And look is average it's like a unisex scooter anyone can ride from 15 years old to 70-80 years old without any hesitation. Very simple design but effective.
Servicing and maintenance:- this is the important thing. I have only done my first servicing in that dealership after that i did in a local vendor because i left my scooter there and when i came to take my scooter at the right side there was a small dent but i don't know what they did they just bent that side. When i ask them they told me it was already there. And so honda should look upon this kind of dealer.
Pros:-good riding experience. Anyone can ride this scooter without any tension. Very low maintenance. I have only taken 3 times to garage in 4 years.
Cons:-u will find fault everywhere in this scooter except riding experience. Bad milege sometime it sounds tan tan tan .
The riding experience is good. Looks wise good. Servicing and maintenance is also good but mileage is the worst never gotten more than 37 even with economy riding speed.
