If you plan on waxing/polishing your bike, either use a soft sponge or a microfiber cloth. Do not use the same cloth for washing and wiping it dry. Use chain lube and not gear oil to clean your chain, gear oil attracts more dirt. Use a brush specifically meant for cleaning your chain.
