2023 Yamaha FZ FI 10K Review
Arvind Baliga
Marking the completion of 10K on my Yamaha FZ FI’s odometer, I felt it was due time to drop a comprehensive review of my past 2+ years with this black beauty. I have to say I am immensely satisfied with everything about the bike so far, be it the ride experience, the tractability of the engine especially in city conditions, the braking, or the handling. That huge rear tire coupled with the monoshock is an absolute confidence booster to lean in during cornering giving you as close a feeling as those MotoGP riders. The huge front disc brake gives you ample confidence during times of sudden and normal braking; so much so that the rear brake is almost never needed (which I highly recommend given the difference between the prices of the front and rear disc brake pads!), though it more than does its job when required. The single channel front ABS is not as intrusive as one makes it out to be and is well tuned. The engine is a boon for city commutes making the quick overtakes easy as pie with ample low-end torque. Personally, I am not one for top speeds or the 0-60 or 0-100 times but when I needed to twist the throttle, I found 80-90 range to be cruise comfort while anything above to be gasping given the engine specs. From a fuel efficiency perspective, given my riding style which includes mostly sedate riding averaging around 50 kmph with some occasional speedy overtaking and the rare I-need-to-get-there-yesterday rides, I am able to see my bike give me 50 kmpl, which is more than enough IMO in these times of 103 per liter of petrol days. Some of the not-so good parts are those plasticky shrouds under the tank that are just too fragile and make it seem like cheap squeaky Chinese toys (hard to believe a Japanese manufacturer such as Yamaha opting for such elements). The factory fitted seat was okay (maybe even poor) for short rides but anything close to and over an hour and your butt begs to be freed from it! I had to accessorize the seat cushion to make it more comfortable for long rides. The stock LED headlight is okay for the dimly lit city roads but come pitch darkness and you will find it severely wanting. I have had the ignominy of riding next to a Bajaj Pulsar N160 (which has a stock projector headlight) on a dark road and felt ashamed about the FZ’s lighting capability. I have been thinking about an LED bulb upgrade for a while now but been putting it off. All-in-all, more than happy with what my heard-earned money (note that this cost me easily 50K less than most other 150cc bikes at the time) got me with this machine that is so useful for my office commutes and exciting for those weekend rides at the same time. No denying that when I see a Pulsar 200NS or a KTM Duke or an Apache, I feel a slither of envy to put my leg around them and give them a go, but then one look at mine, and I am happily back to reality about my set of wheels.

Use the recommended grade of oil. Air Filter: Clean the air filter every 1000 kilometers. Replace it if it is too dirty or damaged. Chain Lubrication: Clean and lubricate the chain every 500 kilometers. Ensure the chain is properly tensioned. Brakes: Check brake fluid levels regularly.
