Ducati SuperSport

The Ducati Supersport 950S is one of the most sensible motorcycles in the Italian brand’s lineup. A sporty Ducati that’s also sensible - it almost sounds like a paradox, doesn’t it? But it’s true in many ways. The Supersport leans more towards being a sports tourer than a pure sportbike. It’s designed to be an all-rounder, equally adept at munching miles and carving corners. But does that mean it compromises on the thrill and excitement Ducatis are known for? After spending a full week riding the bike in every possible condition, I can confidently say it doesn’t.

In person, the Supersport might seem a bit compact for its displacement, but its gorgeously sculpted bodywork is undeniably awe-inspiring. The Panigale-inspired styling blends aggression and elegance so effortlessly, it grabs your attention without even trying. The design flows seamlessly from the sinister headlamp to the sleek tail section—you’ll find yourself admiring it from every angle. The rear seat cowl, which completes its sporty stance, comes standard on the S variant and can be easily removed with an Allen key.

Its impressive design is further complemented by top-notch build quality. From the robust body panels to the meticulous attention to detail, everything screams Ducati. The paint finish, in particular, looks and feels exceptionally premium.

At the heart of the Supersport is a 937cc Testastretta twin-cylinder engine, which also powers the Monster and Hypermotard, albeit in different states of tune. On the Supersport, it produces 108.6bhp and 93Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox, and a quickshifter comes standard on the S variant.

The motorcycle is built around a light and compact trellis frame that uses the engine as a stressed member. The S version features fully adjustable Öhlins suspension, while braking duties are handled by Brembo callipers at both ends, dual discs up front, and a single rotor at the rear. The Supersport tips the scales at a hefty 210kg, has a sizeable 16-litre fuel tank, and offers a rather low ground clearance of 132mm.

All vehicle information is displayed on a crisp and clearly laid-out 4.2-inch TFT screen. It may be compact, but it’s intuitive and easy to navigate. The menu is user-friendly and displays far more data than you’d typically need on a daily ride. Bluetooth connectivity is available via the Ducati Multimedia System, which is offered as an optional accessory.

To suit various riding styles and conditions, the Supersport comes with three riding modes - Touring, Urban, and Sport. In true Ducati fashion, each mode can be independently adjusted for traction control, wheelie control, and ABS intervention. You can also tweak the power output and disable the quickshifter as per your preference in each mode.

The first time I swung a leg over the Supersport, I was pleasantly surprised by the level of comfort on offer. It’s immediately clear that the riding position isn’t as committed or extreme as track-focused machines like the Panigale. While you do sit in a leaned-over, sporty position, the placement of the clip-ons and footrests ensures that fatigue doesn’t set in too quickly. The seat is the most impressive—it can comfortably accommodate even tall and well-built riders. I could easily see myself touring all day on this bike without a fuss.

The true star of the show, however, is the engine, wild yet remarkably manageable. It adapts to your demands with ease. The acceleration is linear but thrilling as power builds strongly up to 6,000rpm, then surges dramatically beyond that. The 10,000rpm redline arrives swiftly, and you find yourself hitting high triple-digit speeds almost effortlessly. Speeds like 150kmph feel like a cakewalk on this motorcycle. That said, the engine does get a bit vibey past 6,000rpm, though I never found it bothersome.

The contrast between Urban and Sport modes is quite pronounced. Urban mode is ideal for relaxed city rides, delivering smooth and progressive power. Switch to Sport, and the performance, and even the exhaust note, become significantly more aggressive and entertaining.

While the engine isn’t extremely tractable like an in-line four motor, it doesn’t take long to get used to its character. There’s some knocking and lumpiness below 3,000rpm, but that’s expected of a Ducati L-twin. For context, the bike can be ridden at speeds just under 50kmph in fourth gear, with the revs hovering just above 3,000rpm.

The clutch deserves a special mention - it’s really light for a motorcycle of this size. The engine heat, too, is well managed, with most of it being directed away from the rider thanks to cleverly designed air vents in the fairing.

Further elevating the riding experience is the Supersport’s communicative handling. Flicking it through city traffic is as effortless as diving fast into corners and holding high lean angles. It responds with obedience and never feels nervous, allowing you to easily exploit its handling prowess. The Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tyres add to the confidence, offering excellent grip and feedback both in dry and wet conditions.

However, more experienced riders may find the factory suspension setup to be on the softer side for aggressive cornering. Thankfully, that can be easily corrected by dialing in some compression and rebound damping. On Mumbai’s undulating roads, though, the stock setting delivers a supremely absorbent and plush ride, both at city speeds, through high-amplitude undulations, and on fast yet uneven highways.

The braking setup is equally confidence-inspiring. The Brembos offer sharp bite without feeling abrupt, thanks to their progressive nature. Meanwhile, the electronic aids, including ABS and traction control, work seamlessly in the background, enhancing safety without intruding on the riding experience.

Do note that the Supersport does come with a few typical sportbike limitations. The low ground clearance requires caution over tall speed breakers. Additionally, the turning radius is quite wide due to the limited handlebar lock, making U-turns and tight city manoeuvres a bit tricky.

The Supersport is one of the rare Ducatis that can handle touring, racetrack sessions, and daily commutes with equal ease. It’s fast, comfortable, superbly equipped, and handles beautifully, all without being intimidating or overly aggressive. That might be a downside for those who crave the wild, untamed character most Ducatis are known for. Such riders would be better served by the Panigale V2 or V4. But if you’re looking for a well-balanced mix of practicality, performance, and stunning looks, the Supersport fits the bill perfectly.

While the long turning radius and low ground clearance aren’t deal-breakers, the biggest downside is its steep price. The S variant is priced at Rs. 19 lakh (ex-showroom), which makes it considerably more expensive than alternatives like the Suzuki Hayabusa and the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX, both of which are bigger, more powerful, and better-equipped motorcycles in many areas. That said, all Ducatis come with a premium price tag for the unique and exotic experience they offer, and the Supersport is no exception. If you’re willing to pay for that exclusivity, you might never have a dull moment on this motorcycle.
