OLA S1 Air Summary

Price: OLA S1 Air price for its variant - S1 Air 3 kWh is estimated at Rs. 1,04,999. The mentioned S1 Air price is the average ex-showroom.

OLA S1 Air is an electric scooter available in only 1 variant and 6 colours. OLA S1 Air generates 2700 W power from its motor. With both front and rear drum brakes, OLA S1 Air comes up with combined braking system of both wheels.

In a recent update, Ola re-launched the S1 Air with three different battery options. So, it’s now available with a 2kWh, 3kWh, and 4kWh battery. The asking price is set at Rs 84,999, Rs 99,999, and Rs 1,09,999 (all three ex-showroom Bengaluru), respectively.

The Ola S1 Air looks identical to the remaining two variants. It features the same twin projector headlamp, curvy body panels, a single-piece seat, and mirrors. But unlike the other models, the Air gets a flat footboard which can add to the usability as it provides a little extra storage space.

Ola has equipped the S1 Air with a hub-mounted motor with a peak power of 4.5kW. Ola claims the S1 Air’s top speed is 95kmph, while the range is rated at 85km for the 2kWh, 125km for the 3kWh, and 165km for the 4kWh battery.

It gets features like a TFT screen, smartphone connectivity, riding modes, reverse mode, side stand alert, OTA updates, music playback, remote boot lock/unlock, navigation, and predictive maintenance.

The S1 Air rides on telescopic front forks and dual rear shocks. Its braking hardware comprises a front and rear drum brake mounted on 90/90-12 wheels. The S1 Air weighs 99kg and gets 34 litres of under-seat storage space.

Ola offers the S1 Air in five colours – Porcelain White, Neo Mint, Coral Glam, Jet Black, and Liquid Silver. It rivals the Ather 450X, TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, and other electric two-wheelers in the segment.

BikeWale's Take

The S1 Air is an electric scooter from Ola and the most affordable one from the brand's lineup. It has been tweaked on the mechanical and software front but retains the majority of the design cues from its pricier siblings.

OLA S1 Air Expert Opinion

Does a cheaper price tag also bring along a lot of compromises? Or, is it just as strong a contender as the higher-spec Ola S1 Pro? We try to answer that by spending some time with the S1 Air.

Introduction

OLA S1 Air Left Side View

Ola Electric has been knocking its rivals out of the park in terms of sales numbers over the last few months, thus leading by a huge margin. Despite that, the company doesn’t seem to slow down anytime soon and intends to keep making its portfolio more attractive. A clear sign of that is the new S1 Air.

This is Ola Electric’s most affordable product yet and is based on the brand's Gen 2 platform. It aims to target people who want to own an e-scooter as stylish and technologically advanced as the S1 Pro but find it way too expensive. However, does a cheaper price tag also bring along a lot of compromises? Or, is it just as strong a contender as the higher-spec Ola S1 Pro? We try to answer that by spending some time with the S1 Air.

The Visuals

OLA S1 Air Right Side View

The S1 Air looks nearly identical to the S1 Pro and retains the same elegant bodywork. The clean and flowing design lines make it quite easy and pleasant to the eyes. However, as against the S1 Pro’s monotone body panels, the S1 Air gets black colour for the lower half of its side panels. It also gets a simpler and flatter seat along with a larger grab-rail. The design of the S1 Air is also more practical as it gets a flat footboard, which is a part of the Gen 2 platform, unlike the S1 Pro’s protruding centre spine. As of now, the S1 Air is available in six colour options.

OLA S1 Air Floorboard

Although it’s impressive visually, our test unit had some uneven panel gaps around the footboard. We could also hear some squeaking plastic panel sound while pushing the scooter around for clicking pictures. Moreover, some minor mechanical quality issues also cropped up in the form of a loose and rattling front brake mechanism and a clicking sensation from the rear every time I rolled off the accelerator. Well, Ola affirmed that our test scooters were pre-production units and that these issues will be ironed out in the final production model.

The Package

OLA S1 Air Rear Suspension

The S1 Air might come across as a scaled-down version of the existing S1 Pro. However, since it’s based on the brand’s Gen 2 platform, there are multiple revisions to its hardware over the Pro trim. For instance, it gets a tweaked chassis for better strength and rigidity, redesigned battery packaging for improved thermal runaway, an altered powertrain for better motor efficiency, a new suspension setup, and redesigned electric and electronic system, amongst other subtle changes.

The S1 Air runs on a hub-mounted motor with a peak power output of 4.5kW and 150Nm of torque. This motor is propelled by a 2.98kWh battery pack which is claimed to charge fully in five hours via a conventional charger. This entire setup concertedly delivers a top speed of 90kmph and a claimed ideal driving condition range of 125km when ridden in Eco mode.

OLA S1 Air Front View

Meanwhile, the cycle parts of the S1 Air are more conventional than the S1 Pro. The former rides on 12-inch steel wheels that are suspended by telescopic forks up front and dual springs at the rear. Unlike the S1 Pro which gets a disc brake at both ends, the S1 Air relies on drums for stopping power.

It's good to see that Ola has retained the large touchscreen display on the S1 Air which is the same console as the S1 Pro. The rider gets access to a wide range of connectivity features. There is a keyless startup system with a digital key, navigation, multiple regenerative braking levels, the option to listen to music on the go, and different mood options which allow you to opt for one of the three faux exhaust sounds.

OLA S1 Air Instrument Cluster

Now, Ola also offers some app-based features in which you can unlock the scooter from a distance. Moreover, the owner can share the app-based unlocking access to the scooter with their friends and family. However, owing to the lack of time with the S1 Air, we couldn't test these app-oriented features. It also gets a reverse mode and hill hold control for added convenience, but the latter wasn't enabled on our test unit.

OLA S1 Air Bike Seat

Not to forget, a large 34-litre under-seat storage space is also available that can accommodate two half-face helmets, although we couldn’t fit in a full-blown, L-sized, full-face helmet.

The Ride

OLA S1 Air Right Side View

Given our short stint with the S1 Air, there was no way to test the range of the scooter. However, the 90kmph top speed came in easily in the fastest Sport mode. Eco and Normal modes, meanwhile, deliver slightly lower top speed and less sprightly acceleration. I rode the scooter in Sport for the most part which felt much quicker than the other two modes, especially beyond 30kmph. While the acceleration felt slightly jerky in this mode, it wasn't too much of a bother in the Eco setting.

OLA S1 Air Right Side View

However, what bothered me was the braking performance. The front lacked bite and lever feel to the extent that I stopped trying to use it after a point. The rear, meanwhile, delivered a better bite with the right amount of progression. And thanks to the presence of a combined braking system, the scooter came to a halt without much drama.

OLA S1 Air Left Side View

As for handling, the S1 Air felt quite nimble and quick to change directions. In the real world, it should be decently fun to zip through traffic. We couldn't thoroughly test the ride quality as our test course was limited to a small section of nicely laid tarmac. However, the suspension felt absorbent while going over big speed bumps and tiny stud reflectors.

Talking about seating comfort, the S1 Air offers a very neutral riding position which felt natural and comfy during our stint with the scooter. It didn’t feel too compact and, despite my 5’11’’ stature, the handlebar didn’t foul with my knees while taking tight U-turns.

Conclusion

OLA S1 Air Right Side View

On the face of it, the Ola S1 Air has a lot of good things going about it which make it an enticing package. It boasts an eye-catchy design, an abundance of contemporary and convenience-oriented features, impressive top speed, promising battery range, and usable storage space. All of this sounds quite attractive when you factor in the Rs. 1.10 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag.

OLA S1 Air Front View

During our brief time with the scooter, the acceleration, handling, seating comfort, and overall extravaganza of features impressed us. However, some niggles like uneven panel gaps around the footboard, a highly ineffective front brake, and a clicking sensation on deceleration, among others, acted as little flies in the ointment. We are hoping these rough edges will be polished out in the final production model. Hence, before we can recommend you consider the S1 Air, a proper road test of the production model is crucial.

Love in with Ola scooter. Music, disco lights at night, comfort, height of scooter, and all other features. Driving in eco mode gives you the best result, best average, and reliability which ensures the healthiness of your vehicle. I personally would like to own another Ola scooter for my other family members.

      MONEY SAVING

      Sunny Abbadasari

Good bike with saving petrol money, need to use daily, per month current bill consumed is 600, quiet and comfortable ride, full for conning city Highways, thanks to its sophisticated technology and advanced Design, Speaker - Although the S1 Air does not have the dual speaker setup of the S1 Pro, nor does it have any kind of bass in the single speaker that it does have on its right side, the ability to have a waterproof speaker setup in your scooter is a big plus. I can comfortably listen to music while driving, if I'm in the mood to, and can also control it via the switches on the Right side of the handlebar. Maps - Inbuilt Maps is a good thing, as now I do not need to keep my mobile in a holder at viewing level for directions if I'm driving towards a new place nearby. USB Port - The port is nicely angled downwards and is away from direct rain splash. It is a boon to have, as it can help recharge the phone battery on the go. No rubber cover is surely a cost-cutting measure and would have raised the value. Speaker Pockets - They are adequately sized, and I am able to fit my Redmi 9 Power with a Leather Flip Cover in them without a problem.

"Zippy!" - The word that comes into my mind when I think of my OLA S1 Air experience

      Nikhil Yadav

Alright, Here's my detailed review of Ola S1 Air.
Let me tell you, buying the S1 Air wasn't exactly a walk in the park. Everything is done through their app, which is cool in theory, but a bit glitchy at times. It took a few tries to get everything sorted, but once I did, man that delivery day was exciting!
A word that comes into my mind when I picture riding it, is zippy! The acceleration is fantastic, especially when you put it in Sport mode. It's perfect for darting through city traffic. The ride itself is comfortable, and handling is a breeze. Plus, the under-seat storage is surprisingly roomy, which is a win for me.
This scooter definitely has an eye-catching design. It's sleek and modern, and I love the color options. The big touchscreen display is pretty awesome too. It shows you everything you need to know, from speed and navigation to battery life. One thing to note, though, is that it doesn't have a fancy single-sided front suspension like some other scooters. It's not a deal-breaker, but it is something to consider.
Here's the beauty of electric: servicing is a breeze. No more oil changes or filter replacements. Ola recommends getting it checked periodically by their service team, but so far, charging at home has been perfectly manageable.
The Good, the Bad, and the Electric:
Let's talk brass tacks. Here's what I love:
Super fun to ride, especially in the city
Loads of cool tech features with the app
Looks fantastic and heads definitely turn
Affordable compared to other electric options
But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Here's what I'm not crazy about:
The promised range isn't always achievable. Realistically, you're probably looking at closer to 100 kilometers on a single charge.
The drum brakes work fine, but they don't exactly inspire confidence, especially at higher speeds.
Customer service can be a bit of a gamble. Sometimes you get someone who helps right away, other times it's a waiting game.
The Verdict: Electric Scooter with a Few Hiccups
Overall, I really enjoy my Ola S1 Air. It's a stylish, fun way to get around the city. However, the limitations in range and some question marks around customer service are things to keep in mind. If you're a city rider who prioritizes affordability and tech features, the S1 Air is definitely worth a test ride. Just be realistic about your expectations for range.

Ola S1 Air - Mixed experience

      Mohan

I bought this Ola S1 Air during the month of August when it was launched. Overall riding experience has been good. But there were a couple of times when the bike did not start at all and I had to get it towed. The fact that it does not have a physical key is a real disadvantage. But I feel afraid to recommend it to anyone since there have been some really difficult situations I faced with this scooter. There is definitely some amount of risk when you are buying Ola due to insufficient service centers. Overall it has been an okay experience.

Salesman can misguide you. Choose one according to your need.

      Yash Vardhan Varshney

I went to buy the Ola Pro Gen2 because of its amazing features but later I got to know, that all the features are coming with the S1 Air as well. The major difference is in the motor type, break type, and battery size. So, I decided to buy the S1 Air because I was not keen to have a 195 km range. I could manage within the 150 km range as well.
Unfortunately, Ola Experience Center did not have the S1 Air for a test ride, which was a sad part. So, I tried on Ola S1 Pro. The salesperson was also not providing proper information about the differences between both e-scooters, so you can consider him as a misleading/misguiding person. However, I was OK with the normal performance and good features according to my needs so I chose S1 Air.
Later, I realized that S1 Air performance is very much down to the hyper mode of S1 pro., but it is not that low for which I can complain. Individually, S1 Air has decent performance which is very ok for daily commutes. It is an ideal feature-packed e-scooter for daily short commute purposes. I ride it for 50-60 km a day. So, there is no issue of range for me. I charge it once in two days, which is fairly ok. It provides me a top speed of 85-90kmph, and pick up is also good in sport mode.
So, this will be a good scooter for people who have to travel 50-60 km per day.
I have not experienced the service yet. I will update the review after experiencing it.
