16th edition of Royal Enfield Himalayan Odyssey flagged-off from Chandigarh

- Six community water purifiers will be installed on the way to curb the use of single-use plastic water bottles

- 60 riders participated in this year’s ride

- Riders will cover over 2000kms in the next 15 days

Riding through the picturesque regions of the Himalayan in Ladakh, the 16th edition of the Royal Enfield Himalayan Odyssey has been flagged off from Chandigarh. For this year, 60 riders had enrolled for the grand journey, who on their Royal Enfield’s, will be seen covering a distance of over 2000kms over the 15 days.

During this trip, as a part of beginning a new journey of sustainability, the brand will be installing community water purifiers at specific locations in order to urge fellow travellers to avoid the use of single-use plastic water bottles. The reason behind this initiative can be attributed to the increasing number of motorcycle enthusiasts riding up to the Himalayas with each passing year. This has resulted in an alarming amount of plastic waste left behind which keeps on adding up. To give an idea, according to the release, more than 12,000 motorcycles ply on the Leh-Manali route every year (official estimates), which translates to approximately 4.8 lakh plastic bottles strewn into the already delicate ecosystem. In an effort to reduce the further increase of single-use plastic bottles, this year’s Royal Enfield Himalayan Odyssey was aimed at zero ‘single-use-plastic-ride’ wherein the riders were discouraged from using bottled water, and rather use the purified water dispensers along the way.

Six community water purifiers will be installed by Royal Enfield along the Leh-Manali route. The purifiers will be installed at strategic locations which are known for maximum movement of motorcyclists riding through. In this season, water purifiers will be installed at Keylong Service Centre, Sarchu Camps, Leh Service Centre, Nubra swiss Camps, Pangong Camps and Swiss camps in Debring. Besides the six units, three additional water purifiers will be used throughout the journey for theHimalayan Odyssey participants.

With this initiative, riders passing through this route will have access to pure and filtered water thus avoiding the need of purchasing single-use plastic water bottles.
