Honda India announced that it has crossed the 40 million two-wheeler sales mark after 18 years of its existence in our country. It took the brand 14 years to acquire its first 20 million customers in India while the next 20 million were fetched in four years.
The Japanese two-wheeler brand started its India operations in 2001 by setting up its first manufacturing facility in Manesar. The first two-wheeler to roll out of this plant was the Activa which went on to become a game changer for Honda. The company recently announced that the scooter crossed 20 million sales milestone in India.
The Honda CB Shine has also been bringing good sales for the brand in the 125cc commuter segment as it has been performing well in some parts of our country. However, it couldn’t fetch as much customers in the 100-110cc entry-level commuter segment which has been majorly ruled by Hero MotoCorp.
Yet another successful product has been the Unicorn 150 which contributed to the brand’s strong foothold in the 150cc commuter segment. When it started to feel dated, Honda added a higher capacity version, the Unicorn 160 to its portfolio which didn’t sell too well. However, the bike is due for an update next year. The company has also struggled to gain numbers in the performance bike market with mild sales of the CBR250R and now-discontinued CBR150R.
Currently, Honda has four production facilities across India with a total annual capacity of over 6 million.
