MotoGP Aragon: Marquez wins on all-Spanish podium

To say that this year's MotoGP championship keeps throwing surprises at us is an understatement. Latest in line was the race at Aragon in Spain, where we all expected one of the Yamahas to win after qualifying, Lorenzo to win after the start, and in the end it was the two Repsol Hondas that took a one-two result.

The first part of the race was Lorenzo's, no question. Vinales struggled from the off, finally settling into fifth and keeping a massive train of riders behind him, beginning with Dani Pedrosa. Lorenzo meanwhile tried to break away with the soft rear tyre but just couldn't pull out a big enough gap over Valentino Rossi. Rossi held second place for much of the race while Dovizioso and Marquez scrapped for third place. Dovizioso faded and Marquez was free to pursue the first two. He even made an error, running off the track under braking and rejoining in fourth. Vinales made an early mistake to drop to fifth, and Pedrosa took quite a few laps to get past him - possibly costing the Baby Samurai a victory.

Eventually though Rossi dropped back into the second group, no doubt pain in his leg a factor nearing the end of the race, Dovizioso faded as well to seventh place. Lorenzo ended with one of his best results yet on the Ducati, a third place.

Mika Kallio of KTM rode well to keep at the sharp end of  the second group in the first part of the race. Aleix Espargaro got Aprilia the honour of best independent team in sixth place overall after Cal Crutchlow crashed out of the race. This result now has Marquez in a commanding lead in the riders' championship.
