MotoGP: Scooters banned from track

MotoGP bans scooters from on-track use during the track familiarisation session that takes place at every round of the MotoGP championship. Yesterday’s crash at Sepang is said to be the reason for this ban.

The fall from Italian Moto3 rider Fabio Spiranelli with Japanese rider Tatsuki Suzuki riding pillion left the pair in the medical centre for treatment. This prompted the ban being put in place by paddock organisers IRTA. Even though it doesn’t sound like a big deal, it will be a big blow to many in the paddock, with most of the series’ riders making the most of the Thursday session to inspect the track. The inspection is often carried out with crew chiefs or rider coaches.

It is still unsure whether this is a permanent ban or a temporary one. MotoGP could make it mandatory for riders wear gear instead of the shorts and trainers they normally go out in. Nonetheless, a new update in the rules of the MotoGP is set to make the use of airbags mandatory from the 2018 season, click here to know more.
