Kawasaki is gearing up for a major transformation in its line-up which will see numerous models being updated for 2020. We have already reported about the upcoming iterations of the Ninja ZX-6R and Ninja 650. Now, a leaked document confirms that the elder sibling of the latter, the Ninja 1000, is also set for an update for the coming year. 

According to a document filed with California Air Resources Board (CARB), the new Ninja 1000 will be powered by a new version of its 1043cc mill. Although the displacement remains unchanged, the filing represents a new engine code, 1.04AAJ, as opposed to the current code which is 1.04AAG. The latter has been in use since 2017 when the motorcycle had received a major update. 

Along with the code name, the document also affirms about the engine’s compliance with the upcoming Euro 5 norms. As mentioned, the updated powerplant has hydrocarbon (HC) and hydrocarbon plus nitrogen oxide (HC+NOx) emission levels of 0.1gm/km. This is appropriate for adhering with the new emission regulations as the maximum required level is set at 0.01gm/km for HC and 0.06gm/km for NOx emissions. As for the existing motor, the HC and HC+NOx levels stand at 0.14gm/km and 0.2gm/km, respectively. 

Besides the engine details, no other information about the 2020 Ninja 1000 has been revealed. On the styling front, expect it to be slightly more aggressive, on the lines of the new Ninja 650. Kawasaki has confirmed that the bike maker will reveal two new models at the Tokyo Motor Show (which starts next week) and three more at the EICMA show in Milan. The updated litre-class Ninja will be uncovered at either of the two events.
