It’s a very good year for the Indian motorcycle enthusiasts. After DSK Benelli announced its plan to assemble the bikes in India, we might have another manufacturer following their footsteps. The manufacturer in question is BMW Motorrad.
As per Autocar, the German manufacturer is planning to assemble some of its motorcycles locally. Currently, all of their motorcycles are sold in India as completely-built-up (CBU) units, which are imported from Germany. This route attracts heavy taxation, due to which the BMW motorcycles are very expensive. In fact, BMW motorcycles are considered to be the most expensive motorcycles sold in India, due to which the sales aren’t good.
BMW is planning to use up their Chennai facility for assembling the bikes. At the beginning, only the F700 and the F800 will be sold via the completely-knocked-down (CKD) route. If this happens, BMW Motorrad will join Triumph, Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson to offer assembled-in-India motorcycles.
