Triumph engine-powered bikes break Moto2 record

- The earlier record lap time was 1:41.890

- Riders Luca Marini and Sam Lowes were quicker than the record time

- Moto2 bikes now use Triumph Street Triple’s race-tuned 765cc motor

The Moto2 fastest lap record was recently broken by the new Triumph engine-powered motorcycles during test runs at Jerez. Riders Luca Marini and Sam Lowes registered lap times of 1:41.524 and 1:41.792, respectively, which was quicker than the previous record of 1:41.890. The testing was undergoing for the 2019 Moto2 championship.

Last year, Triumph went into a three-year agreement with Dorna Sports, commercial rights holder of MotoGP, for supplying engines for the Moto2 World Championship racing from 2019. These powerplants are the race-tuned versions of those which power the current Triumph Street Triple naked bikes. This Moto2-spec 765cc motor produces 138bhp of power which is 17bhp more than the Street Triple RS road bike. Moreover, this power figure is higher than the Honda’s 600cc, four-cylinder motor which was used on the Moto2 machines till now.

The additional power fetched from the Triumph’s Moto2 engine is courtesy of the modified internal components. These include tweaked intake and exhaust ports, titanium valves, taller first gear ratio, race-tuned slipper clutch, race ECU by Magneti Marelli and altered engine covers.
