Government plans to link driving licence with Aadhar card

After linking the bank accounts and PAN cards with Aadhar card, government plans to link the driving licence to this 12-digit unique-identity number as well.

 The government believes that by doing this, they can put a stop to fake driving licences that are being sold in the market. The transport ministry is currently in the process of getting the licence database ready which will then be deployed on a common platform to avoid duplication. This platform can be accessed by any RTO or traffic police officials to check if the driver or the rider already has a driving licence issued in some other states. This will also help the officials to know if the licence has been impounded or suspended for any reason. 

While the government hasn’t given the exact time frame for this policy to come out, it is believed to be out by April 2018. This upcoming rule is applicable to new as well as existing licence holders. This is a good move by the government, however, we would appreciate if the same amount of energy and time is spent on improving the driving tests conducted across all RTOs in the country.
