Yamaha’s Chennai facility to become operational ‘soon’

A senior Yamaha official has revealed that the company’s new manufacturing facility in Chennai is going to become operational very soon. Earlier this year, the Japanese manufacturer recently broke ground for a new scooter plant in Vallam Vadagal, on the outskirts of Chennai. Yamaha had then revealed that the plant will be ready by January 2015, and the recent announcement hints that the plans for the plant are on track.

The new manufacturing facility is initially expected to employ more than 1,800 people, a number which will go up to 6,500 over the next five years. The facility will have a capacity to churn out 4.5 lakh units per annum, which will be eventually increased to 18 lakh units by 2018. Over the next five years, Yamaha will invest over Rs 1,500 crore in this project.

Speaking to PTI during the announcement of top four riders for the 11th Yamaha ASEAN Cup Race 2014, Mr. Ravinder Singh, VP, strategy and planning, Yamaha Motor India said, "Very soon. We are even working hard to make it operational."  The top four riders - Jagan Kumar, Deepak Ravikumar, Padmanabhan, Rajni Krishnan, will compete in the ASEAN Cup Race 2014 at the Sentul International Circuit, West Java, Indonesia on December 6 and 7.

Yamaha had recently announced that India will soon become the Japanese manufacturer’s second largest market. With this new plant operational, Yamaha’s production capacity in the next five years is expected to touch the 28 lakh mark, a small part of which will be headed to the company’s other global markets.
