Introduction

It’s been almost 6 months since we shod the Activa with the Maxxis M6182 and the M6305 tyres. The tyres are available for all scooters with 10-inch wheels and of course the 10-12-inch wheel combo. So in the last 6 months, the tyres have seen all sorts of terrain. Highways, a little dirt, the city and its potholes and now the monsoons as well. Here’s how they fared…

Grip

When it comes to scooters, grip from the tyres does not necessarily mean how fast you can corner. Most scooters deal with chaotic urban conditions and here grip means dealing with greasy roads, uneven roads, gravel and then some. Now the Maxxis’ were superb in the dry. To deal with different terrains, the M6182 comes with a directional semi-lug pattern which helps stability in all conditions and it does work.

And it’s not just while commuting, should you decide to have a little fun with it, the tyres also allow plenty of lean, more than enough to reach the limits of the scooter.

With the onset of the monsoons, we also got to test the tyre in the wet. The ultra-tread pattern is designed to disperse water quickly and we had absolutely no complaints with it in the wet.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency depends on a lot of factors. Rubber compounds, weight, friction generated etc. Light and an ideal combination of grip with low rolling resistance is usually the best. The Maxxis weighed just slightly more than the standard MRF’s that the scooter was originally shod with. With the standard tyres, recent fuel efficiency was 38 kmpl. With the Maxxis, the number has gone up to 41 kmpl. But we think that’s more because the MRF’s were towards the end of their life and were almost worn out.

Tread wear

With optimized nylon-ply construction, the Maxxis tyres are made to be extremely durable. We had measured the tread at 3.94mm and 6.85mm for the front and rear tyres when new. Even after 5000 km the tread depth is at 3.77mm for the front and 6.55mm for the rear, that’s almost negligible wear. At this rate, the Maxxis will easily consume 25,000 plus km.

To buy or not to buy

Depending on the city, the Maxxis tyres are priced exactly in the same ballpark at its competitors. Both the M6182 front and M6305 rear are priced from Rs. 1250 onwards. Plenty of grip, good looking tread patterns, extremely durable and very good value for money, we definitely recommend Maxxis for your scooter.
