Transport Minister plans to penalize EV companies over fire issues

-         Nitin Gadkari plans to penalize EV companies

-         Many EVs have caught fire

-         Majority of EVs sold in India are Chinese imports

The Government of India is planning to impose heavy fines and penalties on electric two-wheeler companies if they are found to be negligent when it comes to the overall quality aspect of the vehicles.

This development has come after a series of electric two-wheelers that caught fire over the last few weeks. In fact, in some cases, there were deaths and also some serious injuries. There were e-scooters from PureEV, Okinawa and also from Ola that caught fire. In a freak incident, a truck carrying 40 Jitendra electric scooters caught fire a few days ago.

The Indian government has been pushing all brands to move towards clean energy like electric vehicles for the last few years. This push has made a lot of people get into the EV business by importing Chinese EVs and assembling them in India. This route has a lot of quality problems as the vehicles aren’t quality checked for India as they aren’t developed or designed keeping Indian conditions in mind.
