Buoyed by the immense growth in scooter sales, Honda is mulling increasing the production capacity at its scooter plant in Gujarat. With the commencement of production at its secondary line in the said factory, the Japanese manufacturer is already en route to cutting down the deficit from 35,000 units to 28,000 units.
The past few months have witnessed the Honda Activa emerge as the highest selling two-wheeler in the country. Trumping its arch rival, the Hero Splendor, the popular family scooter has already put a gap of over 82,000 units since January. While sales of the Hero Splendor are also growing at a decent pace, it is no match for the monumental growth that the Honda Activa is currently enjoying.
Spread over 250 acres, the facility was built with an investment of nearly Rs 1,100 crore and initially boasted of an annual capacity of over 6 lakh scooters. This plant currently is the world’s largest scooter-only manufacturing facility, though the demand is currently superseding the supply. Honda now wants carry this momentum throughout the year, and this necessitates a bump in the production at its scooter plant. This greatly help the consumers by cutting down the waiting period for the Activa range, which stretches anywhere between one month to three months in different metro cities. We can expect Honda to reveal further details about the plant expansion in the next few weeks.
