Top 6 highest selling motorcycles in India

India is the second largest two-wheeler market in the world in terms of volumes, of which a major chunk is contributed by motorcycles. Essentially serving as the backbone of the two-wheeler industry in India, motorcycles have been the chief contributors in improving the connectivity in the rural parts of the country. Not only do these generate volumes for manufacturers, but also allow them to experiment with their rest of the line-up and introduce innovative and enthusiast-centric products. As such, while they may not exactly get us all excited, they sure are a very important part of the Indian two-wheeler industry. Here is a list of the top 6 highest selling motorcycles in India -

6. Bajaj CT100

Bajaj relaunched the CT100 in the Indian market after a span of nine years and almost instantly the motorcycle got off to grand success. The company has been consistently selling over 50,000 units of the CT100 every month. Affordability is one of the key factors contributing to the success of the Bajaj CT100, along with reliability and the promise of an astounding fuel economy. Looking at the popularity of the CT100, Bajaj even launched a barebones version of the motorcycle, christened CT100B. The CT100B is currently the most affordable motorcycle in the Indian market.

5. Hero Glamour

The Hero Glamour might not have gotten off to a good start when it was first introduced in 2005, but sales have slowly started to catch up to the competition. The motorcycle has constantly received cosmetic upgrades to keep it competitive. Hero had also launched a fuel-injected version of the Glamour some time ago, though the motorcycle failed to make a mark in the market. The Glamour missed out on the fourth spot by a very narrow margin, the rate at which the sales are burgeoning leave no doubt that it will get there very soon.

4. Honda CB Shine

Customers of the 125cc motorcycle segment are the ones looking for a balance between 100cc efficiency and 150cc performance. They need a motorcycle which looks good, but doesn’t cost a bomb to own. And in these aspects, the Honda CB Shine is a perfect fit. Complete with elegant looks, a bulletproof engine and Honda’s legendary reliability, the CB Shine is a motorcycle tailor made for its target audience. Such is the popularity of the CB Shine, that the motorcycle even outsold its smaller and more affordable sibling, the Dream.

PS: The CB Shine also happens to be Honda’s top-selling motorcycle, worldwide.

3. Hero Passion

The Passion has always been marketed as a stylish and efficient motorcycle for the youth, and boy has it worked wonders! In essence a dressed up and more premium version of the Splendor, the Passion has struck a chord with rural as well as the urban audience. Launched in 2001, the Passion has gone through some major styling revisions over the years. Hero even sells the motorcycle in an off-road version, complete with a bash plate, knuckle guards and a headlamp grill. The Passion is available in both 97cc and 109cc iterations.

2. Hero HF Deluxe

The HF Deluxe is the entry-level model in Hero MotoCorp’s range. Rebranded from CD Deluxe when Hero ended its joint venture with Honda back in 2010, the HF Deluxe has consistently held onto the second position for a long time now. Basic by all standards, the HF Deluxe is quite the definition of ‘minimalistic’. Its image of being a low-maintenance and hassle-free motorcycle has earned it a loyal following in rural areas. However, this wasn’t enough to make the HF Deluxe the top-selling motorcycle in the country. That crown goes to…

1. Hero Splendor

The Hero Splendor, of course! The Splendor might have been facing a threat from the Honda Activa from the past few months, but it is a clear winner when it comes to motorcycles. On sale since 1994, the Splendor was launched as a spiritual successor to the CD100 and first became the world’s top-selling motorcycle in 2000. There has been no looking back since then. The Splendor is available in one 124cc and four 97cc iterations, though the platform is used for a few more models under different monikers. While there haven’t been many technical changes, Hero does keep upgrading the Splendor range with new paint schemes and decals. The company is soon planning to launch an i3S equipped version based on a brand new platform – the Splendor iSmart 110.
