The Husqvarna Vitpilen 250, whose name translates to "White Arrow," stands out as a sophisticated and stylish competitor in the fiercely contested 250cc motorcycle segment. The second-generation model retains the brand's signature minimalistic, neo-retro café racer aesthetic, but now rides on a new, larger platform. This revised stance significantly boosts its road presence and enhances practicality compared to the quirky first-generation model.
At its core, the Vitpilen 250 shares its engine with the energetic KTM 250 Duke. This 249cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder SOHC engine is a potent and refined performer, producing 31 horsepower and 25 Nm of torque. The power delivery is linear yet exciting, with the real surge of performance kicking in above 6,000 RPM. Crucially, the engine is tractable at low revs, preventing the lurching often found in high-performance singles, thus making city commuting pleasantly smooth. Enhancing the riding experience is the excellent bi-directional quickshifter, which facilitates seamless, rapid gear changes.
Underneath the striking bodywork, the bike employs a new steel trellis frame paired with high-quality WP APEX suspension: 43mm USD forks up front and a pre-load adjustable monoshock at the rear. This setup delivers quick, agile handling and inspiring confidence when cornering. The suspension strikes a fine balance, being taut enough for sporty riding yet comfortable enough to absorb bumps and potholes effectively. Braking is reliable, handled by discs front and rear with standard dual-channel ABS, which features a switchable Supermoto mode.
Ergonomically, the Vitpilen 250 is a huge improvement. The updated seating position is more accommodating for taller riders, addressing a major critique of the previous model, while the seat padding is comfortable for short to medium rides. The feature list is modern, including a large 5-inch LCD instrument cluster, a Type-C USB charging port, all-LED lighting, and traction control—a commendable package for this segment.
In conclusion, the Husqvarna Vitpilen 250 is a compelling and unique machine. It successfully blends striking Swedish design with reliable Austrian engineering. While it is less aggressive than its KTM sibling, it offers a more mature, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing package, making it a fantastic choice for riders looking for both a distinctive style statement and a capable, everyday machine.
It’s a surprise this machine sells for so much less than a Duke 390 (and not more), given it has a more universally appealing design and everything else is the same.
Owning this has been great. I stay in a hill town with many stretches of bad roads and very steep roads. The lightweight body, nimble suspension, and on-demand power make this a very well-suited bike for these conditions, and I see this translating well to a city.
Services are pretty easy too - despite being relatively exotic, there’s a service center an hour’s ride from my place, which is a nice once-in-a-while ritual (thanks Bajaj!).
My only gripe is that it doesn’t come with the Bluetooth package, which would allow me to navigate using the bike’s dash - hope they fix it in future builds.
