The driving license is one such document that everyone needs to have to be eligible to ride a motorcycle, scooter or a car on Indian public roads. Up until now, there was only one way to produce driving license to traffic police. However, things have changed and there are now better and safer ways to show your license to the authority. In this article, we list down three legally accepted ways to produce driving license to law enforcement agencies.
1: DigiLocker
DigiLocker is a smartphone application that digitises majority of the government documents. The driving license is one of them. The traffic police across the country have been permitted to check driving licenses through DigiLocker. But to use it, the rider has to follow a few steps. You will first need to download the application on the phone and register. Post that, select the ‘Driving License’ option from the homepage and then select ‘Ministry of Road and Transport Highways’ from the options. Once selected, you will be asked to enter your driving license number. After validation, the application will generate the license in PDF format. This is the document that needs to be shown to traffic police, in case asked for.
2: mParivahan
mParivahan is another smartphone application launched by the government that provides a wide range of services. Generating a virtual driving license is one of them. To use it, you will have to first download and register on the app. Post that, select ‘My Virtual DL’ and then enter the DL number and Date of Birth for validation. Once these details are matched, the application will generate a virtual driving license. This is the document that can be shown to the traffic police if asked for. The law enforcement agencies can also validate if the license has been cancelled or not by scanning the QR code using their challan equipment.
3: Parivahan
The Parivahan website also offers the service of validating and generating a driving license. However, this process is quite cumbersome and doesn’t make sense for someone who is showing a license through a phone. Plus, accessing license-related services won’t work if there’s no phone network.
4: Hard copy
The final way to produce driving license is by showing the hard copy to the police personnel. But you should know that the law states that you must produce the driving license to the authorities when asked for. This means you can keep the hard copy on yourself and just show the details to them. Most of the time, the traffic police takes the license from you and then tries to validate it. In such cases, there have been instances where the authorities misuse their powers. So always have the license with you and just show the necessary details to the authorities.
