2019 BMW R1250 GS- What to expect

We had reported that BMW Motorrad dealerships have started accepting bookings for the 2019 R 1250 GS which is due for launch soon. The motorcycle will be available in two variants, Standard and Adventure like the current R 1200 GS on sale in the market. So, if you are planning to buy one, here’s what you need to know about this motorcycle.

Design

The new 2019 R 1250 GS is largely similar to the current model featuring the same beak-like front end with muscular body panels. It does receive a few cosmetic updates, thus giving the motorcycle an updated look. The R 1250 GS receives a factory aluminium bash plate to protect the engine from any damage during off-roading. It also gets a new 6.5-inch TFT screen for the instrument cluster and LED headlamps as standard equipment. Compared to its predecessor, the new R 1250 GS weighs 5kg more while the Adventure variant is full 8 kg more.

Engine

BMW has upped the cubic capacity for the R 1250 GS from 1170cc to 1254cc due to which the boxer twin now produces 132bhp of max power and 143Nm of peak torque as opposed to 124bhp/125Nm from the 1200’s. The motor also gets BMW’s ShiftCam Technology which alters the valve timing and stroke for better combustion. The engine continues to be mated to a constant mesh 6-speed gearbox with helical-cut gears while power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a shaft drive. The motorcycle will offer a host of features like traction control, two riding modes (rain and road) and hill start control, now as standard equipment.

Cycle parts

The R 1250 GS will continue to use the same underpinnings, a two-piece steel tube frame with the engine acting as a stressed member. For suspension duties, the motorcycle comes with the same Telelever forks with central spring strut and a hydraulically adjustable monoshock mounted on the single-sided swingarm for the rear. For braking, up front, the R 1250 GS sports 305mm dual floating disc brakes with 4-piston fixed calipers and a 276mm disc with a dual-piston floating caliper for the rear.

Pricing

With the upsized motor, new features and cosmetic updates, expect the 2019 R 1250 GS to be priced around Rs 2 lakhs over the current 1200 model. Once launched, the motorcycle will compete against the other flagship adventure tourers like the Triumph Tiger 1200 and Ducati Multistrada 1260.
