Royal Enfield Himalayan [2015-2023] Summary

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is an adventure motorcycle that is available in six variants and six colourways. The standard version is priced at Rs 2,14,519 (ex-showroom, Delhi), while the top-end model costs Rs 2,23,900 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Powering the Royal Enfield Himalayan is a 411cc air/oil-cooled, BS6 motor that makes 24.3bhp at 6,500rpm and 32Nm at 4,500rpm. The engine is coupled to a five-speed gearbox. The ADV gets a fuel tank capacity of 15 litres, while it tips the weighing scales at 199kg. The Himalayan comes equipped with disc brakes at both ends, while the safety net includes dual-channel ABS as a standard fitment.

Royal Enfield recently introduced three new colour options for the 2023 Himalayan, which include Sleet Black, Dune Brown, and Glacier Blue. These are accompanied by existing paint schemes, namely Gravel Grey, Pine Green, and Granite Black. For the model year 2023, Royal Enfield has discontinued the Lake Blue, Mirage Silver, and Rock Red paint themes.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan also benefits from the Tripper Navigation system, powered by Google Maps. Besides turn-by-turn navigation, the semi-digital instrument cluster here remains unchanged, and it shows a plethora of rider information. Meanwhile, on the features front, the new Himalayan gets a USB charging port, switchable dual-channel ABS, a halogen headlight, and a hazard light switch.

As for the hardware, the Royal Enfield Himalayan comes equipped with 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wire-spoke wheels. These come shod with dual-sport rubber from Ceat. Then, the suspension duties are handled by 41mm telescopic forks at the front and a link-type monoshock at the back.

As far as competition is concerned, the Royal Enfield Himalayan rivals the KTM 390 Adventure, BMW G310 GS, Suzuki V-Strom SX, and the KTM 250 Adventure in India.

Royal Enfield Himalayan [2015-2023] Review

  • Good Things

    • Engine has lots of torque
    • High ground clearance
    • Dual-purpose tyres mounted on spoke wheels
  • Could be Better

    • Misses out on kickstart
    • High seat height can be a problem for short riders

BikeWale's Take

The Himalayan is Royal Enfield's most affordable motorcycle in the adventure touring segment. It packs a torquey motor, good off-roading capabilities and a comfortable upright riding stance. Apart from touring it can also be used for daily commuting.

Royal Enfield Himalayan [2015-2023] Expert Opinion

The Royal Enfield Himalayan changed the way motorcyclists travel and tour in India. This bike gave a lot of Indians the ability to see new places and explore the wild side of this vast country – all in a budget that didn't burn a hole in the pocket. In fact, I know some people whose first bike was the Himalayan and four years later, they are still holding onto it purely due to their love for affordable travel and exploration.

Introduction

Front View

The Royal Enfield Himalayan changed the way motorcyclists travel and tour in India. This bike gave a lot of Indians the ability to see new places and explore the wild side of this vast country – all in a budget that didn't burn a hole in the pocket. In fact, I know some people whose first bike was the Himalayan and four years later, they are still holding onto it purely due to their love for affordable travel and exploration.

For 2021, Royal Enfield decided to make things a bit fancier, more comfortable and aspirational for the Indian buyers. So it gave it some new paint schemes, a navigation system, better windscreen and the seat. We spent a few days with this Royal Enfield and this is what we feel about this ADV. But before, we get into the details, let’s talk about the aesthetic upgrades.

The Visuals

Right Side View

The Himalayan was always known for its no-non sense, rugged and versatile design. ADVs by nature and form are bound to be abused quite a lot in various terrains. That means, there will be plenty of falls. The Himalayan's design allows the rider to save some money because the bodywork and the panels aren’t affected much. Just some scratches that honestly don’t make the bike look shabby.

Right Rear Three Quarter

For 2021, Royal Enfield also decided to give the Himalayan some fancy new paint schemes. The one you see here goes by the name Pine Green and it looks pretty cool, especially if you park it in the wild. The bike also gets a revised windscreen. This time it’s wider (to accommodate the tripper) and also a bit darker (due to the tint). The Chennai-based company has also worked on making the frame next to the fuel tank smaller. As a result, taller riders are far more comfortable now as their knees don’t hit the frame anymore under hard braking. The tail section has been revised too, thanks to the addition of a new tail rack. It now gets a metal plate on top of it to make loading of luggage friendlier.

The Package

Royal Enfield Himalayan Handlebar Assembly

The Himalayan is equipped with dual-channel ABS. This system lets you switch off ABS at the back so that you can have more control off-road. There’s this new navigation display added on the cluster that shows the direction. But in order to use this feature, the system needs to be connected to the smartphone and that can be done via Royal Enfield’s connected app.

Royal Enfield Himalayan Front Suspension

Most of the other cycle parts like the suspension, brakes, tyres and wheels have been carried over from the outgoing model. Unfortunately, the 2021 Himalayan continues to get the same old bulb setup on the headlight and also on the turn indicators.

The Ride

Front View

The 2021 Himalayan feels no different than its 2020 counterpart when it comes to performance and ride. The single-cylinder still carries the same level of refinement. The NVH is pretty good. The power delivery is linear and the good torque low-down keeps things interesting on the road as well as off the road. Due to increase in weight, there's a noticeable difference in performance, thanks to decreased power-to-weight ratio, but the experience continues to be fun.

Front View

100kmph is a comfortable cruising speed for this Himalayan. It can even stay at 110kmph for long hours but you will have to deal with minimal vibes. The five-speed gearbox has got minutely better, but it is still not perfect.  There are no complaints about the ride comfort. The bike is excellent there, thanks to the brilliant suspension setup.

Front View

Plus that comfortable and wide seat is an icing on the cake. Even for stand-up riding, the ergos are perfect. Taller riders don’t necessarily need a handlebar riser. The brakes though, especially the front one still needs some work in the feel and power departments. The rear works flawlessly and yes, it is still fun to switch off the ABS at the rear wheel and get that rear out in the dirt.

Conclusion

Front View

With the 2021 upgrades, the Royal Enfield Himalayan has become far more desirable. The new paint scheme is stunning to look at. The turn-by-turn navigation system works and with its multiple color combination makes it feel a bit more premium. Other small changes like the wider windscreen and smaller fuel tank frame have made the bike a bit more practical. In terms of comfort, the Himalayan has been excelling since long and it’s no different with the 2021 version. And when it comes to the overall performance, this ADV works well for Indian conditions. The high-speed touring might be little difficult due to vibrations but the Himalayan clearly works as a 100kmph all day motorcycle. It can also be used in the city on an everyday basis, but its kerb weight might bother a few of the riders. So in short, buy the Himalayan if you are into exploring the country on two-wheels and also want to use it as a daily commuter.

      Excellent Bike for Road Trip

      Waseemuddin Syed

I have never owned this bike but will surely buy this, because I love this bike's look-wise performance-wise moreover what I love is it can be ridden on hilly roads and Panniers with allot less maintenance. I have never seen any negative points in the upgraded model but I saw a few videos of previous versions that bike Handel comes out while driving but never experienced such.

      1. This is my 1st bike and I feel the very proud owner of my royal enfield Himalayan , it was a great experience when I brought this home.
      2. So far I have driven more than 5000 km in 5 months, so people can understand how happy I feel to ride on this beast!! long rides, off-road everything looks so easy and comfortable on this, like never getting tired after riding!!
      3. The looks are top-notch if you ride through the city or outskirts, everyone on the road will turn their heads to take a look over this and ask you about the bike details, performance is also good as of now, like riding this much heavy bike and having a great performance is a great combo.
      4. Service and maintenance are pretty good which I have experienced till now, as you can get all the bike parts easily in the market and if you book an appointment and give the bike at the showroom the price will be normal, not too much like other big bikes, also re has started a new initiative of checking with the customer by contacting them after few days of service that if the bike condition is good or not after the service.
      5. Now about the pros and cons, if you feel to go on tour or normal ride and you want it completely comfortable then I feel this is the perfect bike till date to rides, cons which I have felt till now is the heat which emits while you are riding in the city, that's because it has air cooling system, so it needs space, rest assured apart from that I haven't felt anything bad in this till now, so I feel if you are a new rider or you are fond of travel and touring this is the best you can try in the market with a good decent budget.

      Exact review of re himalayan

      Akhiltalapala

Hi, firstly the new Royal Enfield Himalayan is a very good choice to own this motorcycle. The riding experience was literally supreme of all the motorcycles I ever rode. About the looks its a rugged motorcycle with aggressive body and its performance was like wild aradian horse. Servicing and maintenance can be manageable. Pros are mainly the torque and the suspension with high ground clearance. Seat comfort and riding posture was perfect. Cons are where are in bumper to bumper traffic engine heating will be more and misses out on usb charging port and kick start.
My Himalayan giving a mileage of 30 km/l in city and in bumper to bumper traffic it is about 26 km/l. On highways I need to test.

check the oils and air pressure weekly twice so that you can get the mileage. And don't use detergents and shampoos to clean the bike it will damage the original paint and fades away the colour.

Have seen a lots of reviews saying this is the best bike for touring. Bought this Royal Enfield Himalayan bs-6 with lot of expectations but engines switches of automatically, poor and in experienced service centers. It takes months for spare parts. Not satisfied with the bike. After driving different bikes for 17 years this is the first time I felt really bad with the bike and service centers.

Great bike with good looks and the seat height is good for tall riders with great suspension for both rider and pillion. Comfort is top class, RE service is the worst every time I go for service they listen and note all the complaints but never fix them, They don't even check the complaints the problem remains same after every service no change at all. They only do water wash and ready to go.

The himalayan is easily the most anticipated motorcycle from royal enfield given its positioning as an adventure touring motorcycle.

      Get Road

The seat is nicely scooped for the rider and is very comfortable – I was almost surprised at how comfortable I was in the saddle even after 3-4 hours of continuous riding. The himalayan is accessible to shorter riders thanks to a low seat height of 800mm, keeping in mind the average height of Indian riders. We didn’t have panniers on our test bikes, but the mounts for them are a well-executed job, and so are the mounts for the jerry cans on both sides of the fuel tank. The led taillight does its job well while looking nice and sits under a large metal grab rail that also doubles up as a mount for a tail bag. A 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear give the side profile of the bike a likable appearance, in conjunction with the tall handlebar, though I would have liked it to be mounted about half an inch higher for better maneuverability, especially when standing up. The upswept exhaust looks nice and works well in not letting water get in, as I discovered while crossing a rivulet. Functional, well-executed design on the whole. Perhaps the section most bikers would be interested in knowing about, even more than the bike’s abilities. The good news is, the all-new, air-cooled, 411cc single-cylinder engine feels very refined, even close to its 6,500rpm, and has a torquey feel to it. With a relatively healthy 32nm on offer, that isn’t surprising. It is the first re-motor to employ oil cooling. But what I and a lot of other journos on the ride felt was that the engine could have been tuned for some more performance. 24.8ps of power is slightly underwhelming for a motorcycle like the himalayan. A candid chat with siddhartha lal, md and ceo of eicher motors, who also rode with us, justified the output though – the primary target audience for the bike is someone upgrading from say, a 150cc bike. The idea was to keep the power output such that even relatively inexperienced riders can harness all of it, apart from ensuring fuel efficiency figures are good enough for someone to want to buy the himalayan as his daily ride as well.
So, it's a great choice for bikers. Go for it!!!!
