Honda files patent for next-gen CBR1000RR Fireblade with active aerodynamics

- Active aerodynamics consists of movable winglets for varying downforce

- Next-gen CBR1000RR Fireblade seems to get styling inspired by RC213V MotoGP bike

- Will get a more powerful engine with a variable valve timing system

Honda has filed a patent for the next-generation model of its litre-class superbike, the CBR1000RR Fireblade. Besides the updated design, the patent reveals that the motorcycle will feature active aerodynamics functionality for enhanced performance.

Active Aerodynamics is basically a term which involves movable winglets on motorcycles for improved downforce. Now, race bikes in MotoGP and WSBK along with homologation-specials such as the Ducati V4R already incorporate winglets. However, the term ‘active’ signifies that these winglets are movable and deploy only when needed and retract when not.

The movable winglets are mounted inside the fairing at a steep angle. When the motorcycle is being maxed out in a straight line, it’s ideal for the winglets to stick inside for reducing the drag co-efficient. At such times, the winglets will automatically move in with the help of cables and servo motors. On the other hand, when the rider is picking up the pace and the front wheel needs to be down for adequate grip, the winglets will be deployed (their default position) to obtain the necessary downforce. The patent shows two winglets on each side. These can either be controlled by the motorcycle’s ECU or through a button operated by the rider.

The design of the next-gen CBR1000RR seems to have drawn inspiration from Honda’s MotoGP bike, the RC213V. It gets a tiny air-intake on the front which is believed to integrate headlamp for depicting a proper race bike look. The engine of the motorcycle will be a heavily revised version of the existing mill featuring variable-valve timing for improved performance. The power figures are expected to be considerably higher than the current 186.3bhp and 114Nm.

The information is still scarce as to when the next-generation CBR1000RR Fireblade will be unveiled. However, we expect the motorcycle to break covers by the end of this year and to be launched as a 2020 model.
