KTM 250 Duke Summary

Price: KTM 250 Duke price for its variant - 250 Duke Standard starts at Rs. 2,39,095. The mentioned 250 Duke price is the average ex-showroom.

KTM 250 Duke is a street bike available in only 1 variant and 3 colours. The KTM 250 Duke is powered by 249.07cc BS6 engine which develops a power of 30.57 bhp and a torque of 25 Nm. With both front and rear disc brakes, KTM 250 Duke comes up with anti-locking braking system. This 250 Duke bike weighs 162.8 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 15 liters.

With the 2024 iteration, KTM bestowed the 250 Duke with the biggest-ever update. The motorcycle received changes on all fronts which promise to make it a more engaging and a more desirable quarter-litre offering than its predecessor.

The feature list of the 250 Duke now includes a ride-by-wire throttle system, a slipper clutch, and a quick shifter. There’s a 5-inch LCD too which is Bluetooth-enabled and offers turn-by-turn navigation. Accompanying these goodies is a new bodywork which is more similar to the flagship 1290 Super Duke than the previous model. The front fascia looks more sinister and radical, the fuel tank section is muscular with sharper extensions, and the new die-cast aluminium sub-frame makes for the tail section.

KTM also completely redesigned the engine of the 250 Duke. With a newly optimised cylinder head and gearbox and a larger airbox, the 250 Duke is claimed to be more potent than before. As a result, the power and torque output numbers have also witnessed a marginal hike. Now, the 248.7cc, liquid-cooled engine of the bike produces 30.57bhp and 25Nm and continues to be mated to a six-speed gearbox. Furthermore, the cycle parts of the bike have also been altered. It is underpinned by an all-new steel trellis frame that joins an off-set mono-shock, a curved swingarm, new 17-inch alloys, and new brakes all of which are lighter to facilitate the bike with a better power-to-weight ratio.

The 2024 KTM 250 Duke will be available in two colours – Electronic Orange and Ceramic White and official bookings for the bike for Rs 4,499.

KTM 250 Duke Review

  • Good Things

    • Overall styling is quite aggressive
    • 250cc engine offers good performance
    • Riding and handling abilities are quite nice
  • Could be Better

    • Overall NVH could have been better
    • Only available in two colours

BikeWale's Take

The new 250 Duke offers a combination of aspirational styling, great performance and modern features. The motorcycle is easy to ride and also has good handling abilities. Plus, with Bajaj’s support, it has great after-sales support. But the overall NVH of the bike could have been bit better.

KTM 250 Duke Expert Opinion

What are the changes on the new KTM 250 Duke? Is it a worthy update if you are coming from a 150cc motorcycle? To find answers to these questions, we rode the motorcycle for a few days and here is what we came back with.

Introduction

KTM 250 Duke Right Side View

We have already told you everything you need to know about the all-new KTM 390 Duke, having tested it on the track and out on the road as well. And I came back extremely impressed with that motorcycle. Today, we have with us its smaller sibling, the 250 Duke, that has also received a generational update in 2023. While the changes are not as comprehensive as the 390, the 250 Duke is somewhat new, and more importantly, costs the same!

What are the changes? Is it a worthy update if you are coming from a 150cc motorcycle? To find answers to these questions, we rode the 2023 KTM 250 Duke for a few days and here is what we came back with.

The Visuals

KTM 250 Duke Left Front Three Quarter

It is obvious that the 250 Duke takes its inspiration from the 390 Duke. You have the same 1290 SuperDuke-like design with muscular tank shrouds and an upswept tail section with this two-piece seat that has been changed from the previous version. The fuel tank is bigger too and comes with a 15-litre capacity just like the 390.

KTM 250 Duke Head Light

However, there are two elements that would give the 250 Duke away. First is the colour schemes. Apart from the orange and grey combination you see here, the motorcycle is also offered in a white and orange combination with orange wheels. The second visible difference between the 250 Duke and 390 Duke is in the headlamp. While it gets a full-LED setup, the 250 does not get the LED DRLs like the 390 and the whole unit looks smaller too.

KTM 250 Duke Handle Bar

The rest of the motorcycle is surely a task to set apart from its bigger sibling and pays in favour of the 250 Duke. That said, the motorcycle comes with a premium build quality. Everything from the paint and panels to the switchgear seems top-notch. However again, the only gripe would be the quality of the stitching on the new seat.

The Package

KTM 250 Duke Front View

The 250 Duke is now feature-laden and comes with a list that you might not even use! Ironically, that is a compliment these days. To begin with, it comes with a five-inch LCD display that is a setup from the plain Jane console it previously got. This unit is Bluetooth-enabled and can be paired with a smartphone using the KTM app. It then gives you the accessibility of using navigation and toggling audio on the screen itself. The layout of the screen utilities is similar to what you see on the 390 Duke and offers the user the ability to customise the display and tweak other controls.

KTM 250 Duke TFT / Instrument Cluster

These other controls include a new Quickshifter+ that is a bi-directional unit similar to what the new 390 gets and is highly addictive to use. This can be turned off if required, and so can the ABS to the rear wheel in the ‘Supermoto’ mode that the 250 Duke comes with.

KTM 250 Duke Split Seat

Other than that, the 2023 KTM 250 Duke comes with a hazard light switch and ride-by-wire throttle as standard. Along with changing the frame and sub-frame, KTM has also dropped the seat height to a very accessible 800mm which would appeal to shorter riders as well. Overall, the riding triangle is much more relaxed with you sitting in the seat than being slightly bent over the handlebars like the previous generation model.

The Ride

KTM 250 Duke Left Side View

Let’s begin with what powers the 250 Duke. Well, you might be thinking, isn’t this the same 248cc engine as before with a slight increase in power? Well, not really. Unlike the previous gen which used a de-tuned version of the 390 Duke’s 373cc motor, the 2023 motor, as KTM says is all-new. One of the biggest differences is that this is a SOHC or Single Overhead Camshaft engine while the earlier model had a DOHC or Dual Overhead Camshaft- similar to the 390. Hence, the internals on the 250 Duke’s engine is new.

KTM 250 Duke Right Side View

Now, why the need for a ‘new’ engine, you ask? Engineering the 373cc engine to make it smaller, frugal and fit in the performance bracket of the 250 Duke would have proved to be costly challenge for KTM. This new LC4C motor is cost-effective, built specifically for the 250 Duke and is also used on the 125 Duke and will soon be seen on the 200 Duke as well.

However, power figures have not changed exponentially. The 250 Duke now offers 31bhp which is a bhp more than before and 25N which is also 1Nm more. Although, the torque comes in slightly earlier in the rev range. KTM has also changed the sprocketing on the bike, by reducing a few teeth on the rear sprocket and achieving taller gear ratios.

KTM 250 Duke Left Side View

This has resulted in a significant increase in mid-range punch between 4-6000rpm. For reference, the old 250 Duke felt slightly sluggish thanks to its rather linear power curve. The 2023 250 Duke is quite the opposite. It feels sprightly and enthusiastic and proper fun when filtering through traffic. What makes it even more thrilling is the light clutch feel and the butter-smooth shifts from the new bi-directional quickshifter.

Manovering through tight spaces feels effortless with the new 250 Duke feeling comparatively more agile. Even the new MRF Brace tyres have made a world of a difference to the 250 Duke’s handling. The W-rated set offers good grip and seems like a proper upgrade from the previous set of MRFs.

KTM 250 Duke Rear Suspension

The new Duke also comes with an updated suspension setup that includes an off-set pre-load adjustable rear shock. The ride felt decently plush, absorbing the undulations and bumps in the tarmac well. However, on the larger bumps and bridge joints, the 250 Duke’s steup felt slightly stiff. Riding with a pillion made things comfier though and the 250 Duke was able to mask the broken bits even better.

KTM 250 Duke Left Side View

Now, the sole aching point in the ride experience were the brakes. The feedback from the setup wasn’t fully crisp and felt spongy after a while of riding and seemed unable to match up to the new-found, exciting character of the 250 Duke. In addition to that, you would also find yourself nagging about the constant buzz of vibrations on the footpegs all through the rev band which only gets prominent as speeds increase.

Should you buy it?

KTM 250 Duke Right Side View

So, is the new 250 Duke worth your money? In our opinion, it is worth every penny. At Rs 2.39 lakh, ex-showroom, KTM has not increased the price of the motorcycle over the previous variant despite the changes.

it plays the perfect balance between the 200 Duke and the 390 Duke not only in terms of pricing but also in its performance and features. Of course, with the changes, it has become even more useable- the low seat height would appeal to a wider range of audience while the engine has good enough punch to keep you engaged. Even its list of features is commendable and just about right. You won’t ever feel the need for more than what this offers. And to top it off, it now looks bigger and better.

KTM 250 Duke thumbnail

Moreover, it serves as a good upgrade from a 150-160cc motorcycle thanks to its accessible nature. While we are yet to test its mileage, with a larger tank and revised internals, it is likely to be frugal too. Well, with that said, the only other options are the BMW G310 R which is priced at Rs 2.90 lakh and the Honda CB300R priced at Rs 2.40 lakh. In comparison, the BMW is pricier and has fewer features, but offers slightly more power. On the other hand, the CB300R is available only through Honda’s BigWing showrooms which are rare compared to KTM’s presence in the country.

      Sarthak Pravin Patange

We bought my Duke 250 2024 from the Kharadi Showroom. The sales guy named Pratik over there was the sole reason we bought the bike over Apache. He gave the smoothest and well-maintained delivery experience throughout. Absolutely stunning delivery experience and a well-spoken humble guy.
The riding experience is good. The bike feels willing to push all the way up to the red line. Once at 8,000 RPM, the bike gets a surge of performance and feels incredibly fast for a 250cc bike. Performance delivery is very linear in the beginning gears, and violent once at the red line. There are observable vibrations in lower gears and speeds. Might fatigue a few people. The riding poster though straight, the bent knees start to cramp your leg up on longer commutes. Pillion seat though more comfortable than before, still leaves the passenger fatigued on longer rides. Not recommended for road trips with a pillion. The quick shifter on my unit seems a bit clunky but snaps into gear lunging the bike forward, hence don’t use it much. But when it works, it works superbly. Braking never felt better. It has stopping power for days. Can go from 80 to 0 quickly at a very stable rate. 4 days in, already did like 220 KM on it. It isn’t even run-in yet, but I already touched 120+ speeds for fun. A lot of harsh bumper-to-bumper traffic riding too. The bike in its run-in period for the first 30 KM gave only 20-21 KM/Lit. Fast forward as the engine is now opening up, it is giving 28. By 300 or so, I expect the mileage to go up to 30-32 in the city easily. Highways in my area are always busy, hence didn’t get proper highway mileage in yet. The bike is a sports bike, hence, comfort and ease of ride are out of the question, but it still performs way better than a lot of its competitors in the daily commuting category.
The bike is a stand-out. Always looks menacing and sharp. Got a man asking the bike's price just seconds after I took it outside after delivery. Yes, people do call you chapri when they get to know it's KTM, but if they don’t know the bike is from KTM, they look at it with aww. 10 minutes into the ride, my friend who said I made a mistake by buying this bike, changed his opinion and now rides it more than I do. Performance as previously is very good for a 250cc BS6 compliant single cylinder motor.
Didn’t yet have a service, but from what I am told it will cost me no labor charges, but they will charge me for oil, oil filter and coolant change separately. Basically, they will change these items for free for the first service, but will charge me for the products they will change. This I found ridiculous, as the bike already costs ₹2,85,000 where I live. I expected them to make this first service fully free for that.
The bike is a very good offering from KTM for beginners in 250cc category, though the price is very steep. It will last you well enough for short commutes and slightly longer runs. Burst of performance is addictive. Overall, the ride comfort isn’t great, but for a sports bike, very doable. I will recommend this bike only to people who want sheer performance at the cost of a little bit of mileage and comfort. Bring a Bajaj partnership product, the service and maintenance shouldn’t be a hassle either. Great bike for a selective group of enthusiasts only.

Try using a branded well-reviewed and trusted coolant, which affects the bike’s temperature significantly. Tires that come as stock are almost slicks, try changing them in for better tread once during rainy seasons, as the bike slips a lot.

1 )The KTM Duke 250 offers thrilling performance with its agile handling and potent engine.
      2) Its sharp styling and quality components add to the appeal.
3)The pros include a powerful single-cylinder engine, impressive acceleration, and robust brakes.
      4) is worth every penny. At Rs 2.39 lakh, ex-showroom, KTM has not increased the price of the motorcycle over the previous variant despite the changes. it plays the perfect balance between the 200 Duke and the 390 Duke not only in terms of pricing but also in its performance and features

      Dinakar Reddy

The KTM 250 Duke gets a design inspired by the KTM 1290 Super Duke. The motorcycle also gets a dual-channel supermoto ABS mode. The 250 Duke continues to be powered by a BS6-compliant 248.8 cc single-cylinder engine which makes 30.50 bhp of power at 9250 rpm and 25 Nm of peak torque at 7250 rpm all is good in this bike.

This bike is value for money.
      The pickup was brilliant.
      My experience is very awesome.
      I suggest this bike.
The KTM 250 Duke has evolved into its third generation, and it's gotten all mean-looking. And with that, it has also matured as a motorcycle with rider aids that were previously only restricted to the 390 range. Not that the 250 Duke needs them, but it now becomes more approachable and manageable for a rider graduating from the commuter class. It’s laden with features like a bi-directional quick-shifter, dual-channel ABS with a supermoto mode, a 5-inch LCD instrument cluster with a 4-way switch cube, and then some more stuff, which we will get to in due course. While the price has gone up marginally over the Gen 2 model, the bragging rights have certainly gone up by leaps and bounds.

      Its a flawless bike

      Aayush

Its a lovely bike and recommend everyone. I even learnt how to ride a bike on this only and it's super comfortable but in long runs sometimes I feel like seats can be a bit uncomfortable for over 6 ft guys and who are healthy like me my height is 6'3 and my weight is around 95kgs. The most helpful feature of this bike is the quickshifter and its works very smoothly i dont think i can ride others bikes that doesn't have a quickshifter as i learnt while using the clutchless gear chaning method as i get very comfortable while using this method. i even experienced the pillion seat and it gets very uncomfortable after 2 hours of ride i don't like either of the seats much but the power weight handling is superb overall apart from the seats its an amazing bike with fully loaded features. The Bluetooth connectivity and navigation works flawlessly though it needed some mods apps to download so that it can work. If i talk about the mileage its meh i dont know whether the 25-26 mileage for a 250 cc bike is good or bad in city never went to the highway though but its pretty much average and i have done only 1st service so far. It would be better if they added drl's and made headlights more strong . Yes seats and headlights can be only flaw in this bike and without after-market lights it can be a nightmare for the night riders the light throw is like its goes far but the brightness is really low even in high beam and if there is pothole or any obstacle you cant see it at all

Use chain lube every 300kms it tends to get dry frequently after 300-500kms. Cleaning is a must for this or else it looks really dirty. If you can add a mudguard then please do it or else it will get really dirty and muddy.
