Bajaj Avenger Street 220 [2015-2020] Summary

Bajaj has resurrected the Avenger cruiser brand with the launch of the new Avenger Street. This new iteration is being offered in two variants –Street 220 and Street 180. While the smaller 180cc version is a new addition built to attract a wider audience base, it’s the Avenger Street 220 that really takes forward the legacy of the iconic Avenger brand in India.

The Avenger Street 220 has gotten an all-black treatment. While most of it is dipped in matt black, there are contrasting silver bits like the heat shield on the exhaust, wheel rim tape and a few side panels. The fuel tank may look similar to the one in the old model, but the new Avenger logo and the golden and red decals make the tank area look quite stylish. Bajaj has equipped the Avenger Street 220 with rubber bellows on the front suspension forks to complete the full black look of the motorcycle. Braking consists of a drum at the rear, but the front disc now has the option of single-channel ABS, an option worth a little less than Rs 7000 over the non-ABS Avenger.

The Avenger Street is built around the same tubular double cradle frame as the old model. Powering this motorcycle is a 220cc single-cylinder, oil-cooled DTS-i engine, which puts out 19bhp and 17Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a 5-speed gearbox.

Priced at Rs 97,000 onward (ex-showroom), the new Avenger Street 220 doesn't have much competition at that price.

Bajaj Avenger Street 220 [2015-2020] Review

  • Good Things

    • Has a comfortable riding position
    • Good engine performance
    • Great service reach
  • Could be Better

    • Requires more effort to quick turns in cities
    • Front brake lacks power and bite

BikeWale's Take

The Avenger Street 220 is the blacked-out, custom cruiser version of the Avenger Cruise. It gets a potent 220cc engine along with a comfortable riding position. Since Bajaj has good service reach, the Avenger Street is easy to maintain.

Bajaj Avenger Street 220 [2015-2020] Expert Opinion

The new Avenger 220 Cruise and the Avenger 220 Street are examples of Bajaj’s ingenuity. They are here to rejuvenate the long-standing Avenger brand. While the models are similar under the skin, the Avenger 220 Cruise and the Avenger 220 Street are targeted at slightly different sets of buyers.

What is it?

The new Avenger 220 Cruise and the Avenger 220 Street are examples of Bajaj’s ingenuity. They are here to rejuvenate the long-standing Avenger brand. While the models are similar under the skin, the Avenger 220 Cruise and the Avenger 220 Street are targeted at slightly different sets of buyers.

The former is a take on the authentic old school, highway cruiser with an overdose of chrome all around. From the oil-cooler to the handlebar, from the suspension, spoke wheels, headlamp and the turn indicators to the grab rails, it’s all nice and shiny. The Cruise also sports the quintessential high-rise handlebar and a teardrop fuel tank finished in an elegant grey.

The Avenger 220 Street is more of an urban machine and one that seems to be inspired by the Harley-Davidson Street 750. Compared to the Cruise, the Street gets a blacked-out frame, a flat handlebar, alloy wheels and a matte black paint scheme for the engine. Otherwise, the tank, the body panels, the cycle parts et al are all identical to the Cruise.

How does it ride?

The raked out front, the low seat height and the fat rear tyre are all typical cruiser fare on the Avenger 220 Cruise and Street. Even so, they feel surprisingly agile and manoeuvrable. It takes little effort to get the Avenger to change directions be it in the city or around a set of faster corners. It isn’t the best for corner carving, of course, not with its front end returning little feel via the handlebar, but it isn’t confidence shattering or anything. Moreover, the motorcycles feel surprisingly light to handle.

Even in a straight line, the Avenger feels stable and planted. The brakes work well too. As far as ride quality is concerned, the telescopic front forks have good travel and absorption ability, but the rear end does get a little jumpy and harsh over pronounced undulations and deeper potholes.

What we didn’t like about the Bajaj Avenger 220 Cruise and Street was the engine character. The 19bhp 220cc oil-cooled DTS-i engine was essentially designed for a 220cc street bike. And it shows in its oversquare layout. Even though Bajaj says the torque curve has been revised to suit a cruiser’s character, it doesn’t feel like it on the road. The vibrations start early – at around 70kmph in fifth gear. And by the time the Avenger hits 100kmph these border at the uncomfortable with the vibes being felt at the handlebar, footpegs, tank and even the seat.

Furthermore, the 5-speed gearbox lacks crispness and on our test bike, it was plagued with false neutrals, especially when ridden hard. The good news here is, along with the light clutch and gear ratios that are well set for city use, the Avenger is easy to live with in stop and go conditions.

Anything else I should know?

It can be surprising how a handlebar can make such a big difference. The Avenger 220 Cruise, thanks to its swept back handlebar, feels more like a relaxed cruiser. The Avenger 220 Street, on the other hand, feels more aggressive and sporty right off the mark, courtesy a flatter and lower set handlebar. The new seat is better padded and even the pillion seat isn’t exactly uncomfortable. The backrest cushion on the Avenger 220 Cruise works well too. Another point worth mentioning is the addition of a new LCD display in the instrument console, which integrates the odometer and the tripmeter.

Now, the Avenger 220 Cruise and Avenger 220 Street might look like beautifully finished motorcycles from a distance. But, get close and you will find a few rough edges like the exposed wiring, a few rough welds, some low-rent plastic, and the poorly finished, pseudo brushed-aluminium finish, which we didn’t like at all. The switchgear design looks dated too and could be better finished.

Why should I buy one?

The Avenger 220 Street and the Avenger 220 Cruise are motorcycles targeted at an audience that wishes to enjoy the bliss of owning a cruiser but are held back by a budget. While these motorcycles aren’t perfect there’s no denying their visual appeal. Buy one if you like posing and prefer to take it easy on the road. Both models come with an identical price tag, so the choice of which one to go for is entirely up to you.

Where does it fit in?

As small-capacity cruisers, the only rivals that the Bajaj Avenger 220 Street and Avenger 220 Cruise have are the Mahindra Mojo and the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350. While the Avenger is a league below its rivals when it comes to outright grunt, opulence and the awe factor, they are far more affordable than the Mojo and the Thunderbird as well. The Rs 84,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi) price tag puts the Avenger 220 Cruise and the Avenger 220 Street well within the reach of many. And of course, who wants to spend even less for a cruiser, there’s always the 150cc Avenger.

      Comfortable ride

      Kiran

It's a very comfortable ride, the styling is like a Harley Davidson with a massive tank and long body for a comfortable ride, I love this bike - we've ridden it comfortably many times with 2 kids and 2 adults. It's low maintenance, nothing ever breaks, no kick-starts, so it's worth looking after if you use it occasionally.

      Best budget cruiser

      Abhinav Ankur

      1. Buying experience
i bought my bike on 12-apr-18, when I was in noida. Before buying the bike, I had watched multiple youtube videos about cruiser bikes and my love for traveling on a motorcycle. After all my research was done, I boiled it down to avenger. Called the bajaj showroom for enquiring about the bike and they said the bike is available and there is no waiting time involved. So, I packed my bag, printed all the relevant documents and visited the showroom on 12-apr-18. The salesperson in the showroom was very helpful throughout the process and explained all the technical specifications of the bike in detail. He was very patient as this was my first bike and I had lots of questions to which he took his time and answered all of them.
Within 3-4 hours all the paperwork was done and I even got a inr 5000 discount on the bike.
At 5pm in the evening, the key was handed over to me and I was now the owner of a brand new bajaj avenger 220 street.
      2. Riding experience
avenger being a cruiser bike gives a very relaxing stance during the rides, be it a city ride or a highway ride. The 220 cc engine gives enough power to maintain cruising speeds of 80-90 kmph on Indian highways and can take the top speed of 125 kmph (this is the top speed that I have taken the bike, however, it may differ for other riders). You will feel little vibrations in the side view mirrors when you reach a speed above 100kmph but that's fine given the amount of power the bike generates. The bike being heavy is very stable during the rides.
      3. Details
looks - 8/10 - the front headlight part could have been made stylish
performance - 9/10 - never had a bike break down in the middle of the highway, no major issues felt, but
felt little vibrations in the mirror when going beyond 100 kmph.
      4. Servicing and maintenance
bajaj offers very satisfactory and genuine bike servicing. This is what I have observed over time, be it in Noida or Bangalore. Before servicing, whatever issues that I tell are resolved after the bike is handed over to me after the servicing is done. I have never crossed more than inr 5k in servicing to date. This excludes the extra parts and accessories which I have purchased from the service center. Bajaj being the market leader in 2-wheelers, original spare parts are easily available throughout the market.
      5. Pros and cons
pros - engine packs a good amount of power
      - built quality
      - tyres
      - exhaust sound
      - riding posture (best for short heighted people below 5'7")
cons - brakes - my bike doesn't have abs
      - riding posture (I'm 5'9", so when riding the bike tail bone pains and for longer rides, it becomes a
the problem, so I'd suggest using cushions
      - headlights.

      Good bike for daily commute

      B Saikia

I owned this bike in Sept/2016. Totally dome 46000km. Doing great since bought it. Less maintenance cost. Only problem chain. Needs to adjust very frequently. But the chain problem I think arises due to quick acceleration. Too smooth to ride. I'm feeling the same pickup and comfort. Good bike. Breaking is too effective.

Royal comfort of cruise for a long ride on Indian roads

      Yogendra Joshi

I own avenger 220 for the past 7 years. It's a pleasure to ride it and gives a great feeling on long rides. Power, breaking all is great. It looks royal and feels royal. Also, the backrest for the pillion rider gives very good comfort for long rides.
The only possible issues I found were:
      1. Turning radius is a bit high (but that comes with the cruise look)
      2. If you keep it unused for a long, the battery can get discharged and due to no kick start you have to get the battery charged.

Not suitable for daily use, that to in a city like Bangalore. High maintenance
Get back pain while driving in heavy traffic.
No kick start options, if there is a problem with self motor or battery, can't do anything.
Mechanic find it difficult to repair small problem, especially wiring problem.
      Problem with chain sprocket
