BikeWale's Take

The Ronin is a new modern retro motorcycle from TVS. This motorcycle is a bit inspired from the Zeppelin cruiser concept but has been altered to make it more relevant to the current taste. The combination of retro styling, modern tech and 225c engine makes it quite enticing. However, this motorcycle won’t be liked by riders who love to ride fast and aggressive.

TVS Ronin Expert Opinion

TVS Ronin Custom Flat Tracker: First Ride Review

Introduction

TVS Ronin Front View

TVS loves to experiment with some of its expensive motorcycle and scooter brands. It did a few cool things with the Apache, and then decided to explore the world of superheroes with the Ntorq by launching some excellent paint schemes for it. Such strategies help the brand stay connected with its younger customer base and make it look aspirational.

The Hosur-based company has decided to continue this trend with the Ronin 225. At the MotoSoul 2023, the company unveiled a custom motorcycle designed and developed to participate in flat tracking – making it the second Indian company to do so, with Royal Enfield being the first.

TVS Ronin Front View

TVS is calling its flat-track sport – Drift R Cup and is planning to use this custom Ronin for multiple events planned by the company. At the MotoSoul 2023, the company handed us the Ronin flat tracker, and we decided to have some fun.

The Design and Modifications

TVS Ronin Right Side View

From a city bike to a flat tracker, this custom Ronin has undoubtedly managed to turn heads. TVS has achieved this feat by removing many cycle parts and installing some to make the motorcycle dirt ready. Firstly, many big components like the headlight, instrument cluster, stock seat setup, and exhaust have been removed. Even the side panels have been removed, and lighter ones have been installed.

TVS Ronin Bike Seat

Then, a few components were installed to make it track-ready. The front suspension is new and gets long travel; a broader handlebar and a flatter and a more extended single seat have been incorporated. This Ronin gets a race exhaust that is extremely loud and does the job of keeping spectators entertained. There’s also a broader and more extended bash plate, in case the bike needs to go through some stones. The tyres are from Timsun and are off-road focused. But the essential modification on the bike – the front disc brake – has been removed.

The Ride

TVS Ronin Front View

The goal was to ride around the 200 metres flat-track with style, hoping to avoid tasting the dirt. But things don’t always go as planned. The first few laps were consumed in getting used to the overall ergonomics of this custom Ronin. Then, that large cushionless seat made things a bit difficult, but eventually, I got used to that setting. Now, with the custom Ronin, I was in no mood to do a few laps. I wanted more, got more, and put up a good show, all thanks to that agile and light feeling that Ronin churned out.

TVS Ronin Engine From Left

Ronin’s 225cc motor always had the low-end grunt to keep things fun and active in the city limits. On the flat track, the same performance helped me get out of the corner with some amateur slides. While my left leg was busy acting as the last balance point of the tripod, my wrist made sure to gas out the moment I found the right line of the track.

TVS Ronin Front View

The custom Ronin was running shorter ratios in the first gear, due to which shifting to second gear was inevitable. But that’s where the fun lies because even on such a fast track, it allowed me to begin my slide by downshifting, just a few metres before my turn-in point. Here, the transition is super smooth – some credit also goes to the chassis and the Timsun tyres which allowed some comfortable slides.

TVS Ronin Right Side View

I had a few falls due to target fixation, and thankfully there are no front brakes on such bikes because that could have resulted in some nasty falls. The rear brake, however, was used quite a bit to slow down my aggressive straight runs. But just before entering the straights, the clutchless upshifts resulted in the rear shift tailing aggressively. That said, not even for a moment I felt I was losing control.

Verdict

TVS Ronin Front View

It is clear from this custom Ronin that TVS will continue to innovate with its motorcycles. The Ronin flat-tracker showed us the brand’s ability to enter a new sport and get more people into such races. The bike wasn’t just a temporary show. Much effort and time were put into making it dirt ready, which indeed took care of the dirt quite well. But more importantly, the concept of the Drift R Cup looks fun, and if expanded to various cities, TVS could see a profound change in brand perception. It will allow many Indian consumers to experience this new and addictive motorsport; maybe some would like to take it professionally. Well, I would have tried if the custom Ronin and a flat-track were easily accessible in my city.

Cons: let's start with this one, in the city where you juggle between 1st and 2nd gear this engine heats up. In Bengaluru traffic, there have been some horrible days where I had to keep my seat so far that it would not touch the tank. But this only happens in extreme traffic.
      Now about Pros:
Service cost is less compared to other bikes I have seen.
      Long ride :
Buttersmooth experience, I went on a solo ride from Bengaluru to the Rann of Kutch with some heavy luggage and I did not face any issues whatsoever. Even in the hot conditions of Gujrat and Mumbai engine stayed cool and performed best.
Comfort is exceptional, I am around 5'7 and it is really comfortable, even though I am quite heavy the ride was not tiring at all.
I took this one in some of the really bad roads but no back pain at any point.
The mileage was around 40+, I did not track it much though.
Daily commute: easy on legs and not tiring.
Touring kit: TVS provides some customized touring kits for this one which you can buy online or from the Service center which is cool
Overall experience: engine heating in the initial days is there, I heard it's the same with many other 200cc+ bikes too, so it's not a big deal. But apart from that this bike is exceptionally good. I love it.
Windshield: I bought the one available from Amazon for Meteor 650.

TVS Ronin: Retro Charm with Modern Performance - A Comprehensive Review

      Arijit Roy

The TVS Ronin is a well-rounded motorcycle that caters to both city commuters and touring enthusiasts. Its 225.9cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine delivers a peppy performance with a strong low and mid-range pull. The bike's comfortable ergonomics, plush ride quality, and agile handling make it a capable city companion. Additionally, the Ronin is equipped with a host of modern features like full-LED lighting, Bluetooth connectivity, voice assist, and dual-channel ABS. While the top-end variant's price of Rs 1.49 lakh (ex-showroom) may seem steep, the bike offers good value with its comprehensive feature list. The only downsides are the lack of dual-channel ABS across the range and slightly underwhelming highway performance. Overall, the TVS Ronin is a well-executed retro-styled motorcycle that strikes a good balance between style, technology, and practicality.

      Tips for other riders

Break in the engine properly by varying speeds and not pushing it too hard in the first 1000 km. This will help the engine parts condition themselves for better performance and longevity. Service the bike regularly as per TVS recommendations, which is every 4 months or 3000 km. Timely servicing is crucial for maintaining the bike's performance and reliability.

      1) I raised my budget to buy this bike, it's Hassel free buying experience.
      2) The riding experience as expected is good and the sturdy road in the special local area runs smoothly.
      3) it looks sporty and tour bike.
      4) there is no issue till now in maintenance and services.
      5) pros:- very comfortable for long runs and breaks are working very well, especially riding experience is super cool for long route off-road places.
Cons:- ground clearance is not that good for heavy off-road and pillon rider slips sometimes due to the back seat is a downside which is a bad part I felt personally and got reviews from friends as well.

      The Bike You Want

      Satyabrata Sahoo

I am not buying this bike but one of my close friends bought this bike a previous year, I went with him to the showroom when I saw the bike the first time in the showroom, I loved that bike but for me the cost of the bike is high but I say that I ride my friends bike almost 2000-3000 km in many trips, I feel a luxurious comfort I can explain it. The mileage is decent in my opinion.
Now when I post that review I am planning to buy this bike in 2024, so in my opinion, if your budget is below 2lac and you also want a retro bike then you must go for it without second thought.
yes I am confused btw Hunter 350 and tvs Ronin but I say the comfort and the additional things that can provide by ronin , Hunter can not provide that with that money , so that is all my opinion about ronin.

5.Pros. - * I am using it for my daily commute which is

Seating posture is vertical which provides
      comfort neck and spin.
Cons . - Chain noise starts after each 2000km , one
should do chain loop by self.
