Yamaha Ray ZR 125 is a mileage scooter available in 6 variants and 12 colours. The Yamaha Ray ZR 125 is powered by 125cc BS6 engine which develops a power of 8.04 bhp and a torque of 10.3 Nm. With both front and rear drum brakes, Yamaha Ray ZR 125 comes up with combined braking system of both wheels. This Ray ZR 125 scooter weighs 99 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 5.2 liters.

The 2023 Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Fi Hybrid has been launched in the Indian market with upgrades to comply with the newest norms. This scooter, which targets young buyers, retains the design of its predecessor. However, Yamaha Motor India has tweaked the colour palette and graphics for a refreshed look for 2023.

The mechanical specifications retain the 125cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine with fuel injection technology. This motor delivers a maximum output of 8bhp at 6,500rpm and a peak torque of 10.3Nm at 5,000rpm. For 2023, the Ray ZR 125 Fi Hybrid series benefits from an OBD-II sensor and is compatible with E-20 fuel.

The styling, as mentioned earlier, remains unaltered, and the 2023 Yamaha Ray ZF 125 Fi Hybrid retains the aggressive design of its predecessor. The disc variants of the Ray ZR 125 Fi Hybrid gets the all-new Dark Matte Blue colour, while the Ray ZR Street Rally 125 Fi Hybrid will be available in two new paint themes – Matte Black and Light Grey Vermillion. Further, the disc and drum variants of the Ray ZR 125 Fi Hybrid get new graphics in its existing colours – Matte Red, Metallic Black, and Cyan Blue.

The feature list on the 125cc hybrid scooter retains Bluetooth connectivity that works with the Y-Connect smartphone application. The Yamaha Y-Connect app includes a fuel consumption tracker, maintenance recommendations, last parking location, malfunction notification, revs dashboard, and rider ranking.

The features also include the Intelligent Power Assist system that is said to deliver an additional thrust, utilising the Smart Motor Generator (SMG) system. The SMG system, which is available on all 125cc Yamaha scooters, doubles up as an electric motor to offer additional linear power when the rider accelerates from a stop or while climbing steep inclines. Other features identical to the previous version include Automatic Stop & Start system, a side-stand engine cut-off function, and a combined braking system.

The suspension hardware comprises telescopic front forks and a rear spring, while the anchoring setup on the base model includes drum brakes on both wheels. The premium variant benefits from a disc setup at the front. The scooter rides on 12-inch front and 10-inch rear alloy wheels that are shod in tubeless tyres.

The Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Fi Hybrid rivals the likes of the TVS Ntorq 125, Suzuki Avenis 125, and Honda Grazia in the Indian market.

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Review

  • Good Things

    • The design language is quite retro
    • 125cc engine is refined
    • Comes with cool rally variant
  • Could be Better

    • Doesn’t get USB charging as standard
    • Gets smaller floorboard
    • Overall quality could have been better

BikeWale's Take

The Ray ZR 125 is a brand new scooter from Yamaha. It gets distinctive styling and is loaded with design cues that looks quite trendy. It is also available in some fancy paint schemes. The 125cc engine is fuel-injected and performs decently. But the company should have worked a bit more on improving the overall quality of the scooter.

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Expert Opinion

Yamaha Motor India created a niche for itself in the Honda Activa-dominated 110c scooter segment by introducing the Ray ZR Street Rally over two years ago. We tested the Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally BS6, and here is our road test review about the scooter.

Introduction

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Right Front Three Quarter

Pros: Attractive styling, peppy 125cc engine, fuel efficient

Cons: Attention to details, ride quality

Yamaha Motor India created a niche for itself in the Honda Activa-dominated 110c scooter segment by introducing the Ray ZR Street Rally over two years ago. The scooter was pitched as a product that can go off the beaten path. Now, the scooter has received an upgrade to comply with the BS6 emission norms, and during the transition, Yamaha has also bumped up the displacement and gave it a styling revision to make it even more appealing. The only direct rival to the scooter is the new Aprilia Storm 125, although the Yamaha product is more affordable. We tested the Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally, and here is our road test review about the scooter.

Quality

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Left Side View

The Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally looks and feels like a quality product. There aren’t any squeaking noises from the body panels while the paint, decals and the overall fit and finish look neat. The switchgear and the multifunction, too, works well. On the downside, the one thing that makes the Street Rally stand apart from the standard model is also a negative for the scooter. The knuckle guards aren’t properly installed, and they sit slightly above the brake levers. The material, too, looks flimsy, and it may not offer much protection in a crash. Excluding that, there aren’t any issues in the quality department of the scooter.

Comfort

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Action

The Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally rides on telescopic front forks and a single-sided spring at the back. The suspension is on the stiffer side, and you will feel every bump and undulation on the road when riding solo. Add a pillion, however, and it works really well and filters most of the undulations effortlessly.

Riding the scooter in the city is quite fun, and the scooter easily filters through the traffic. The ergonomics are upright, and on the comfortable side. There’s sufficient space on the saddle to accommodate two adults. The legroom, on the other hand, isn’t the most comfortable in the segment. The knees come quite close to the body panel behind the apron, and you’d occasionally hit the handlebar while making U-turns.

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Engine From Left

The scooter can also go off-roading, and while you can stand on the footpegs comfortably, do not expect an ADV motorcycle-style ergonomics. The footpegs, however, are rubber covered and they tend to get slippery when wet.

Performance

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Action

The 125cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled motor on the Street Rally makes similar power and torque output as the standard Ray ZR. The engine is tuned to produce 8bhp of power at 6,500rpm and 9.7Nm of torque at 5,000rpm. While the power and torque output numbers aren’t segment-leading, the light kerb weight of just 99kg aids the scooter’s case.

The power delivery of the Street Rally is linear and the scooter feels peppy right from the go, while the acceleration until 80kmph is brisk. The pace at which the scooter gains momentum starts to fade post 80kmph, but you can still achieve 90kmph fairly easily. The 60-70kmph range is a sweet spot to cruise without much stress on the motor. The Street Rally feels stable even near its top-speed.

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Front Wheel

The braking setup feels progressive, although it lacks the initial bite. You can still confidently drop the anchor, and the scooter comes to a standstill without much drama. The safety net of CBS ensures that the braking force is distributed on both wheels.

The block-pattern tyres add a rugged look to the visuals, and also deliver a satisfactory response on dry roads. However, they aren’t very forgiving to any antics pulled over wet tarmac.

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Underseat Storage

Then there’s the practicality aspect of the scooter. The Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally boasts of a 21-litre under-seat storage that can be used to store an open-face helmet or a small backpack. The saddle, too, is large enough to accommodate two adults comfortably.

Technology

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Instrument Cluster

The modern features on the scooter include a fuel-injection system, Smart Generator Motor, Start and Stop technology, CBS tech, and a side-stand engine cut-off system. The compact, yet stylish digital instrument cluster displays information such as tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge, an odometer and a trip meter. An Eco indicator is part of the instrument cluster, and it informs the rider when the scooter is delivering maximum fuel efficiency.

Fuel Economy

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Open Fuel Lid

The Ray ZR Street Rally, similar to the standard model, delivers a real-life fuel economy of 50kmpl. With its 5.2-litre fuel tank, the Street Rally can cover over 250kms before it needs a refill. The only thing that bothered us during the test ride was the lack of external fuel filler cap.

Fitness of Purpose

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Action

The standard Ray ZR and Street Rally aim to attract young buyers, and it ticks all the right boxes to make it happen. Its looks stylish while being practical too. The engine complements the muscular looks of the scooter, and it keeps up with other vehicles on the highway effortlessly.

Our Take

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Front View

With its added equipment such as the knuckle guards and the bold colours and graphic, the Street Rally looks even more appealing than the standard Ray ZR. It catches attention wherever it goes, and it should help the company attract young buyers. The engine complements the styling of the scooter while the fuel economy and large under-seat storage make it practical.

There are a few negatives that Yamaha needs to address. For example, the Street Rally misses several crucial features such as an LED headlight, a Bluetooth-enabled instrument cluster, an external fuel filler cap, a pass switch and a boot-light, which may push away some of the buyers towards its rivals. Surprisingly, the scooter also misses the parking brake mechanism, which will cause some inconvenience while parking. Lastly, the stiff ride quality is bothersome.

Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Action

Otherwise, the Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally is a very appealing package and fun to ride scooter. It retails at Rs 73,530, which is just Rs 1,000 more than the disc brake version of the Ray ZR. For the additional Rs 1,000, you get bolder graphics, knuckle guards and block-pattern tyres. Moreover, the only other product that directly rivals the Street Rally is the Aprilia Storm 125, which is over Rs 13,000 more expensive than the Yamaha scooter.

I would start with the Cons first.
      1. Bad Mirror.
      2. Headlight is very bad at night. You would need additional lights if you are planning late-night long drives.
      3. Vibration from the front attachments, more when you drive slowly over uneven roads.
      4. I'm 168 and can't place my feet completely on the ground. Heels will be up a bit.
      5. The Transition from Dio to this one was a bit tough, needed some miles to get acquainted with the beast.
      6. 80 kmph is Max you can go after that, you would feel like stepping out and running with the bike.
      7. The tyres you get initially are bad, after 1000 - 1500 kms please change them.
      8. The front hook does not support more than 1kg load. You need to buy a tie to get the groceries tied to the front floor.
      9. Mind the wind when you go above 80 kmph. The vehicle is only 99kg
      Pros
      1. Very smooth vehicle, 1500 kms driven so far no other issues apart from the above cons.
      2. For me it's a very upright vehicle, very comfortable. Do not travel with a bag on your shoulder, use a tie to attach to rear hand grab rail.
      3. It climbs to 55 - 70 superfast and then it's lazy.
      4. Mileage 51 with city traffic.
      5. Auto engine cutoff switch.
      6. Side stand engine cut off.
The longest I have travelled in a stretch is 150 kms, took a break of 15 minutes in between.

      1. Yamaha services are good, however, you need to speak to them about everything and build a good connection with them, that would help you get more maintenance tips. 2. Long drives after 80 - 100 kms please take a break of 30 minutes. 3. Regularly check oil, and tyre pressure, and check under the vehicle to see if anything is loose or something is wrong. 4. When you are travelling over speed and hit the bump, it will impact the front and back suspension. Speed is good as long as you can control it properly.

      Bike with Comfort & Economy.

Best vehicle for daily use. The only bike in the market which can suit both sports youngster & family person. Scooty is easily handled in muddy areas because of the front and back tyre arrangement. And because of its UBS braking system, tyre size, bulky and More Balanced body structure, it feels more confident on any type of road.

My Opinion About Yamaha Ray ZR125

      Sayan Sarkar

The Buying Experience was so excellent and superb they organized a cake for me to cut and the behavior was also good for the showroom executive. The riding experience is quite good and the seat is so comfortable when I ride it. And performance is top notch and the looks of the Moto GP edition are killer looks. Service maintenance was also good and the executive was very helpful to me. The Mileage, looks, on-road presence, and weight of the scooter is just 99kg which I loved so much and all the things I liked so much. The cons are...No led headlight., No Bluetooth connectivity., External fuel tank.

Buying experience and Riding Experience are excellent. Scooty is easily handled in muddy areas because of the front and back tyres arrangement. And because of its UBS braking system, tyres size, bulky and More Balanced body structure, it feels more confident on any type of road. The only thing I don't like is its Service Because the protection Gard looks is very beautiful in the scooter so I bought it from the Yamaha dealership but when I go to the service center for any problem the staff always told the remove that guard your problem will solve without see the problem.

The scooter is good looks sporty attractive design I bought this scooter last year with faster processing of documents I booked and I got it the next day, they don't call you for vehicle service as the Suzuki showroom does, 1 service lapsed and opted for 2nd service, riding experience is but doesn't feel safe when you bend the vehicle while taking the turn in medium speed no USB charger or bottle holder they could have added, helmet space good for 1 helmet only, seating I always slip forward whenever I apply the brake (slippery seat) overall good scooter
