More than meets the eyes - Yamaha is a practical everyday quarter litre bike

Tarun Kumar Pandey

1. The buying experience of buying a Yamaha was really amazing at JM Yamaha motors, Noida. Paper work was hassle free and from the day I bought this bike till date, they have been really courteous and attentive to me. Specially, the service manager and showroom owner.
2. Bike's seating/riding ergonomics is spot on compared to a mix of many motorcycles. The handlebar is wide like a street bike, upright like a cruiser bike, tilted at an angle like a sports bike (with also a bit raised foot pegs which makes the riding fun). Also, the split seats are amazing in terms of space and cushion. This bike can give you sports as well as a cruiser feel. I am obsessed with its riding dynamics.
3. Looks are phenomenal. Even the bike of it's segments are dwarfed in front of it (it's true and i am not kidding). My bs4 model looks more intidimating than Dominar 250 and Gixxer 250 from the frontal area. The swept up tail with neatly designed saree guard integrated into the rear mudf lap shows Yamaha's attention to detail. This bike has a good torquey low and mid range punch which becomes blunt when revved upto its 9650 rpm redline and makes this bike easily cruise at 100 km/h at 6730 rpm in its tall 5th gear. Engine is smooth below 7k rpm and becomes rough above that, becoming satanic on the redline. The clever sprocketing in this bike makes it faster in quarter mile race than its rival bikes. Its quite light when compared to competition and that could be sensed in city's bumper to bumper traffic. First three gear ratios being short and the rest two being tall makes it an excellent city as well as highway bike. Heat management is excellent as well and oil cooler does its job fairly.
4. Normal servicing is pocket friendly ~ rupee 1.2k to 1.5k, whether it's paid or free (except the oil filter which is way more costlier when compared to competition) but when a running part is changed its way more costlier than the competition (being a yamaha owner in India, you have to bear this pain as their parts are always costlier). Also, the yamaha service centres charge a lot on the name of labour charges and then charge got over the latter, making it even more costlier. Regarding maintenance, this is a proper no-non sense bike - enough said. Its made for rough everyday usage and ocassional weekend long rides. Except the rear disc pad change at every 8k to 10k kms (front disc pads usually last longer) and periodic (every 500 kms) chain cleaning and lubing, all this bike needs is a tank full of gasoline.
5.. Pros -
A. Linear & torquey power output and well distributed gear ratios
B. Fuel economy is high in its segment
C. Beefy muscular looks flaunted by a robotic fascia and well sculpted & engineered rear end.
D. Riding ergonomics and split seats with good seating area and comfort for both - rider and pillion
E. Bike with the best butter smooth engine (below 7k rpm) in its bs6 price range of rupees 1 lakh 34 thousand (ex-showroom, Delhi)
F. Smooth and bassy exhaust note - typical Yamaha
Cons -
A. Headlight (bs4) is like a mini torch instead of a proper headlight
B. Instrument console is pathetic viz. Reminds me of Casio calculator
C. Parts cost are high when compared to the competition.
D. Rusting and rear brake pad issue is persistent in earlier models (non-abs bs4)
E. Engine needs a serious overhaul. It's in a dire need of a 4-valve head setup to breathe-in air freely, to rev high and smooth, in its top end. Also, a bigger oil-cooling radiator might assist this bike for long hauls on highway.
If these things are done, then only could the bike ask for a potent and well distributed 6-gear transmission.
F. The front suspension leak and swing arm bush corrosion is imminent in the whole fz series right from the inception of fz16 and Yamaha has done nothing till date to curb it out.

Tips for other riders

Avoid parking this bike in direct sunlight and wet/damped area as this may cause starter problems. Always clean & lube chain at every 500 Kms. Get the fuel injector cleaned at every 10k Kms and Throttle Assembly & Fuel Pump cleaned at every 30k Kms. Add Yamaha carbon cleaner fluid to the fuel tank at every service.

Perfect city commuter for under 1.5 lakh

Nitin Sharma

The fz25 has been my first ever bike and though it had its own share of niggles during the past two years of my ownership but i can for sure say that i am completely in love with this machine. Now the engine is not really the most powerful one in the 250cc class, in fact it is the least powerful. But that all doesn't matter once you twist the throttle of this beast cause the power is just enough for daily use. The engine is also quite tractable and it is able to cruise at city speeds without any stress or unnecessary vibration. One area where the bike really outshines others is the braking. The front 282mm disc is just amazing to make the bike sop without any drama whatsoever. Same cannon be said for the rear brake though which is just there for the sake of it. While the brakes are good but what is not very nice are the mrf tires. Maybe a set of stickier rubber might help this overall perfect beast. One more area where it feels like the bike lacks a bit is the unavailability of the overdrive gear. Now ideally anything over 4 gears is overdrive but here in this bike the 5th gear also feels like a power gear and you always try to engage the 6th gear which is very much required in this bike.

Drag king 25

Better than royal enfield. Superb engine refinement, mileage around 37-40 kmpl which is amazing. Beats all royal enfield bikes in performance and re is nowhere close to yamaha's engine refinement, however, I know RE does not make performance bikes. And even in 250cc segment fz25 is little underpowered but atleast its better than RE . The most amazing part is engine refinement which is what Yamaha is known for and best mileage which are my top reasons to buy this bike. However this bike has an issue with ground clearance which is manageable if you ride alone but need to be taken care of, with a pillion rider
