Himalayan the bike to ride

2 months ago by Yashveer Singh1,413 views

I have purchased this bike in Covid time, and my purchasing experience was pretty good but i have to wait to around 2 months as some parts were imported from china and the imports were banned at that time. But the wait made it more special. And then the day arrived after almost 2 months, the dealer called me and told me that my bike is ready, the time I saw my bike I could not look anywhere else but my my brand new bike. I has always my dream to get Himalayan and that day my dream came true. Post lockdown was the first time I took my bike for an actual ride before that I have several small ride but Himalayan was not made for 200 or 300 km's ride, so I made a plan and this time it was 4000 km ride and it was a hell lot of fun. I rode my Himalayan in heat in rain and even in snow for a while. It performed like an royal Enfield. It looks pretty simple but it is eye catchy at the same point. Its off road capability is similar to highways (both are fun and easy). I got it serviced 2 times one major and on minor and it was very smooth and they charged me very minimal price.

I bought the bike on march 19th 2021 and I loved the bike very much but issues started after first service that is after 500 km. The will not start after we turn it off for some reason. It will not start once it’s turned off. It’s a brand new bike and showing this kind of problems and also it will stall in the middle of the heavy traffic. Today, I almost crashed because the bike turned off when I was riding on 70 km/h with pulled throttle. The bike slipped because the rear tyre got locked as the bike turned off. I have visited the showroom several times but problem still continues.

I bought a new Himalayan September 2018 and I covered meanwhile 47300 km on it, all on European roads and most km's where run on motorways. Characteristics for the Himalayan are its comfortable riding position, excellent suspension, robustness, long stroke engine and relative good economy. The latter because of cumulative average mileage of 35 km/l over 47000 km and modest costs of service and maintenance. Covering 1000km on a single day is few effort on a Himalayan. It is great fun to keep up with my friends driving much faster bikes as ducati monster, bmw gs1200, bmw r-nine-t, moto guzzi breva and yamaha tdm 900 on curvy and twisty roads as long as there are no long straight sections in it.This is the benefit of the best suspension in royal Enfield line-up and the rev-happy engine that has reasonable low torque and excellent mid range torque. What went wrong or might be improved? Broken chain at km 27000 Switch gear/ starting relays problem starting @ km 30000, just recently solved under guarantee. It is however easy to bypass the switch with a cable from the live wire to the external terminal of the start motor. With that cable you can always start. Rapid wear of the motor-side sprocket (@ 16000 km it is nearly worn, despite frequent re-lubes). I think that it would make sense to frequently turn this sprocket E.G. Every 2000 km to get a gradual wear with the pulse wise loads of the single. Alternatively a 2nd front sprocket at hand could balance chain and sprocket life better. Difficulty is to get the m20 nut of the sprocket loose with hand tools. The Honda sprocket fixation with to parallel bolts is much more convenient. Rising fuel consumption for the last 3000 km. For this I suspect the brakes, especially the sliders of the calipers. Would I recommend it. yes, for sure, basically it is a rock solid motorbike and good value for money.

This is very crazy moment of booking the bike. I remember java was launched at the same time and initially I booked java and later review received as rust formation in metals cancelled the booking and right away went to re showroom and booked the royal enfield Himalayan (bsiv) without test ride. Wow! what a bike :)Almost waited for couple of days for loan approvals and rto process then received the bike. Seriously, I was shocked with the performance of the bike and throttle sound of exhaust. I have purchased grey and white sticker strips on the tank and tail part. It is definitely a naked version of adventuring bike. Looks wise awesome and very comfortable for touring and off road. May of us have a thought it wont be fit for long touring but believe me it is only one bike which gives more comfortable in 400cc bikes (I bet on it). As I mentioned it is 411cc, single cylinder and 15+ liters of tank capacity. Depends on your riding style it will lead too 300+ km's in one full tank. If I talk about servicing and maintenance it is reasonable and affordable price for any repairing. Accessories are frequently available for Himalayan in service centers. I am not sure about others for my Himalayan bike and based on my riding style every time of service would cost me around 1.8-2k depends on consumables needed but compare to other company re is bit affordable price and accessible for everyone. Lets come to my favorite and important topic (pros & cons).
Pros:1. Short rider can easily ride the bike 2. Good mileage and service cost 3. Long travel touring without any tiredness 4. Easily mount the luggage with bungees 5. Suspension good and take huge pot holes without any stress 6. Low end torque performs well in hills station. 7. Good in corning with confident.
Cons:1. In bumper to bumper traffic, your legs will be boiled for sure. 2. City commuter is bit uncomfortable.3. Fuel gauge is gets defective very soon ( I have changed almost four types 4. Cone set issue appears every 7k-8k km's (needs a mandatory replacement).5. Tube types for sure Definitely need little improvements from re like (cross spoke wheels to avoid punchers, instrument cluster change). 98% of vehicle is good and just 2% drawbacks but does not mean it is bad one. In 2021 they have added good features in the bike. For rider safety please wear always helmet, mandatory gears and ride responsible.

Buying: Buying experience was smooth and hassle free. Dealer helped a lot with follow-ups with company and delivered my bike much sooner than promised date. Here I will like to give 5/5 stars. Riding: I have took this bike for 400 km's ride before my first servicing. Taken care not to exceed 60 km/h and 4000 rpms to get a smooth run in of the engine. Suspension is not as smooth as most of the owners claim. It is at harder side and that is okay because it is an adventure bike. But you can feel bumps and potholes more than my previous bike which brand and model I will not reveal to keep away from bias. Otherwise riding is smooth, maneuvering is smooth. I do not feel weight of the bike while using it even in the city traffic except I am stand still. Seat is okay for long rides but I would like to change it to a bit harder one.
Looks and performance: Looks are okay. Not exceptional but average. The bike is bit taller than most of other regular bikes that's the prominent difference. Performance is okay. For me it was not extra ordinary like what I have seen in some YouTube channels. Engine gets stressed and bike made weird noise in 3rd gear at 50-60 km/h speed in my said trip. Later I came to know that chain of my bike was not properly tight as showroom mechanic told me. Why it was not configured? I had no answers. In steep ghat sections you feel shortage of power. And yes, the clutch is hard. I mean real hard that my palm began to ache after 100 km's of ride. Gear shifting is hard. I can hear a thud when I put bike in first gear from neutral. Higher gears are somewhat smoother. Much talked tripper navigation is useless when phone loses network. I had expected it shall store my route and guide me even when there is no network. So no point having separate console meter for same thing which a simple phone mount can do. A USB charging port would have been more useful than tripper navigation. Secondly, I yet to find a soul who can tell me the compass meter was life saver for them. The last point is, bike do not want to start after each refuel. I have to try a few times and that scares me as it do not have a kick start option.
Servicing and maintenance: After first service the bike was still making weird noises so i had to take it to service center again. After my complaint they came to know about the issue. Then what did they checked about my complaints while giving it for first servicing? the noise was because of harden rear brake pads which they replaced in warranty. How? I mean how they got hardened? I had no answers again. Crash guard in my bike is yet to arrive and not fitted yet. Due to which when I dropped my bike (a soft drop at stationary position in my parking), the clutch leaver got bent. Now I have replace it at my cost. I have ordered knuckle guards while taking delivery of bike on 19th march and yet I am waiting for them on 4th April.
Pros and cons in my opinion: Pros : a budget entry level adventure bike* rigid design. One can feel the sturdiness of bike* only internationally reputed Indian adventure bike, I feel somehow this bike will not ditch me on road* smooth buying experience.
Cons : service centers need to improve no usb port to charge devices.

Its doesn't take much maintenance and for servicing for 4 - 6 months once we should take it for servicing and maintenance.

I have got this beast in 2017, overall experience with re staff (ManMohan autos) is very good till date. I have driven it in ladakh, himachal, Punjab & Haryana on and off road. Usp of this bike is it's looks, it still catches eyeballs on signals etc, it performs really well on long journeys including a comfortable riding experience. Maintenance is easy, just get it serviced regularly and take it anywhere you want. Cons : water accumulates in tank leaking from the lid, no kick start no tubeless tyres, cone set has to be replaced again and again.
