The Continental GT 650: A Charismatic Yet Compromised Cafe Racer
1 week ago
Mahesh
The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 is a motorcycle that appeals primarily to emotion, offering an authentic 1960s café racer experience blended with modern engineering and reliability. It is a stunning machine that consistently turns heads, delivering a raw, mechanical thrill often missing in contemporary bikes. At its heart lies a gem of an engine: a 648cc parallel-twin that is remarkably refined for its class, offering smooth power delivery and abundant mid-range torque perfect for both city streets and spirited highway rides. The engine sound is an addictive, deep exhaust note from the stock pipes, and the bike is notably free of intrusive vibrations at most speeds. The chassis, developed by Harris Performance, provides agile handling and excellent stability, especially when carving corners, backed by confident braking from ByBre calipers with dual-channel ABS. However, the GT 650 is not without its trade-offs. The aggressive, committed riding posture—featuring clip-on handlebars and rear-set footpegs—can be physically demanding, causing wrist and back discomfort during long commutes or heavy traffic. The suspension is on the stiffer side, which enhances handling but can feel a bit harsh over poor road conditions. Additionally, the bike feels heavy at slow speeds, and engine heat in dense traffic can be a concern. Ultimately, the GT 650 is a niche motorcycle. It demands a rider who prioritizes style and an engaging, old-school feel over all-out comfort and practicality. For enthusiasts who embrace its inherent character, it's a deeply rewarding and value-for-money machine that provides a unique and enjoyable riding experience.

This bike excels in style, smoothness, and weekend fun but suits experienced riders who prioritise cafe racer vibes over daily practicality. For students or young professionals in Delhi eyeing a first 650cc, test ride to check the ergonomics—it's timeless but demands mods for perfection. The engine runs smoothly with minimal vibrations, providing strong low-end torque for city rides and confident acceleration on open roads. Riders praise its grippy tyres, excellent cornering, and that signature exhaust note, making it fun for spirited rides. Fuel efficiency holds up well at 25-27 kmpl, suitable for Indian conditions, despite the air-cooled setup generating some heat.
