River Indie

If you are in the market for an electric scooter that costs around the Rs. 1.5 lakh mark - give or take a few thousand - the choices are plenty. You have products from the traditional scooter makers - The Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, and Hero Vida, in addition to new-age alternatives likes Ather Rizta and Ola S1.

And then there’s the River Indie.

Now, it doesn’t have your typical family scooter vibes as it mixes utility with retro charm and futuristic minimalism. Having said that, it still ticks several important boxes for a typical family scooter buyer, at least on paper. The question is - does it come together in the real world?

The Indie stands out immediately. It’s a large scooter with a long wheelbase and generous bodywork. Up front, the twin LED headlamps give it a distinctive identity. The side profile reveals its real intent: Crash guards, integrated saddle stays for mounting luggage, and even additional front-set footpegs that allow you to shift your feet if the floorboard is loaded.

It’s function following form, which in this case has a peculiar charm to it.

The 14-inch wheels and upright stance give it proper road presence. And even though the scooter has been around for some time, it still looks unlike anything else in the segment. Fit and finish are impressive. Panel gaps are consistent, and everything feels solidly put together.

The plastics at places, though, look hard-wearing instead of premium. And upclose, the Indie gives the impression that it’s built for work, instead of having to be pampered.

River offers the Indie in a single variant. It runs a 4kWh battery paired with a 4.5kW mid-mounted motor, producing 26Nm of usable torque. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a chain drive instead of a hub motor or belt. That means some additional maintenance, but it also makes the scooter quieter over time.

The scooter is offered with three riding modes - Eco, Ride, and Rush. The latter allows a claimed top speed of 90kmph, but range drops to around 70km in the real world. Ride, on the other hand, offers a more balanced riding experience. You can still hit 80kmph but can now travel over 80km on a single charge. This is the mode we would recommend as the default choice for daily riding. There’s Eco as well, which stretches the range to beyond 100km. But the performance, as a result, blunts quite significantly.

Underneath, it uses a tubular frame with telescopic forks up front and twin rear shocks with preload adjustment. Braking is handled by discs at both ends with CBS or combined braking system. There’s no ABS, even as an option. Furthermore, at 143kg, the Indie is heavier than most rivals, but an accessible 770mm seat height, even with a 160mm ground clearance, does make things easy.

The 6-inch LCD display is basic. It’s non-touch, has minimal menu depth, and skips features like turn-by-turn navigation. In a segment where many electric scooters sell heavily on connected tech, the Indie feels deliberately simple. Where it makes up ground is practicality. The 43-litre under-seat storage is among the largest in its class. There’s a lockable front glove box, bag hooks, USB charging, a boot light, and substantial floorboard space. The luggage mounting points are standard, not accessories. Again, the focus on utility stands out.

On paper, the Indie is heavy by traditional scooter standards. But swing a leg over, and the weight doesn’t intimidate. The low seat height and well-distributed mass make it easy to manage, even at parking speeds.

The highlight of the Indie is its powertrain. The throttle calibration is well judged - light and progressive. There’s no abruptness in delivery either. And it’s easy to modulate at crawling speeds in traffic, while offering clean and predictable speed build-up for overtakes. Motor noise is minimal, too, and overall refinement is impressive.

It has three ride modes, with the middle ‘Ride’ mode being the sweet spot. It offers enough performance for overtakes and to climb flyovers without sacrificing too much range. The Rush mode feels quicker, but not dramatically so. The scooter loses around 10km of riding range in this mode. Eco mode, meanwhile, is subdued. It works fine for short neighbourhood runs, but makes the ride a boring affair.

Handling is another strong area for the River. Despite its size, weight, and 14-inch wheels, the Indie feels agile. It changes direction willingly and filters through traffic with ease. It feels smaller than it actually is. However, at speeds approaching 80kmph, it doesn’t feel as planted as expected. There’s a slight nervousness in a straight line, which is surprising given the long wheelbase and larger wheels.

Braking hardware is strong; a disc setup at both ends. The front brake offers a strong bite and good feel. But, engaging the rear brake introduces noticeable front dive due to the CBS calibration. It’s manageable, but not as polished as it could be.

Ride quality, as expected, is firm. It is a heavy scooter designed for utility over all else, after all. Thankfully, the ride is not harsh or uncomfortable, but you do feel road imperfections, especially from the rear. Expectedly, with a pillion on board, the ride improves. But, as a pure family scooter, it needed to be more compliant.

Ergonomics, too, are a mixed bag. Using the floorboard results in a slightly cramped ‘knee-up’ seating, given the short seat-to-floorboard distance. Switching to the additional front-set footpegs improves comfort significantly, offering a more relaxed posture. The handlebar reach and seat width are otherwise comfortable for daily use.

The River Indie is a good scooter, but not the easiest to recommend. As a family scooter, it comes close with ease of riding, good underseat storage, reasonable range, and approachable seat height stacked in its favour. But then the ride is firm, and for the price, its feature set is quite basic. And it’s here that it begins to lose the value for money race. It just can’t match some of its plush, tech-rich rivals.

As a utility-focused electric scooter, however, it makes a strong case. The huge storage capacity, luggage mounting options, robust build quality, smooth powertrain, and practical range make it genuinely versatile. So, if you need a scooter that doubles up for business use — deliveries, shop runs, or carrying equipment — and still works for daily commuting, the Indie becomes an easy recommendation.
