Yamaha India recently dropped the prices of the R3 by a massive Rs 1.10 lakh. The price cut has managed to stir a lot of interest once again. The R3 is known for its reliability and proven engine and chassis. It is also pretty engaging to ride, with a 321cc, parallel-twin engine that puts out 40.4bhp and 29.4Nm. This unit is mated to a six-speed gearbox as standard. This engine is quite rev happy but at the same time is pretty refined. That said, if the Yamaha R3 is part of your consideration list, here are other options to look at.
Kawasaki Ninja 300 (Rs 3.43 lakh, ex-showroom)

The Ninja 300 has grown quite long in the tooth but there are still takers for this parallel-twin engine equipped bike. The 296cc unit makes 38.8bhp at 11,000rpm and 26.1Nm at 10,000rpm. This engine is known for its refinement and mid-range punch. That said, the styling is old and despite Kawasaki’s relentless efforts of changing colours and graphics, there is no hiding the age of this bike. Nevertheless, it is a proven package and quite the safe bet that one can consider. The only thing to keep in mind is Kawasaki’s reputation when it comes to service and spares costs.
KTM RC 390 (Rs 3.21 lakh, ex-showroom)

The KTM is the outlier here when it comes to engine configuration, with a 373cc, single-cylinder engine. However, it makes around 43bhp and 37Nm which is more than the Japanese motorcycles in this list. The RC stands out with its radical design, bold colours and equipment, that includes a colour TFT display. The bike’s ride and handling is also pretty good and on the whole, it is great value for money.
