    Yamaha R2: Review Image Gallery

When the Yamaha R2 was launched a few weeks ago, riders had one important question about it – whether it is as good as, or better than, the R15 on track. We recently got the opportunity to answer that by putting the new R2 through its paces at the Madras International Circuit and narrated our experience in detail in the track review. However, if you haven’t read that yet and want a quick summary of the review, here you go.

Starting with the engine, the R2 feels more alive than the R15 almost across the rev range. From the lower end of the rev band to up top, there’s a stronger pull almost throughout.

The torque curve presented by Yamaha shows a spike at 6,000rpm, so that’s where a kick in performance should be felt in the real world. The spike is accompanied by a change in intake note which should sound sportier, as per Yamaha.

As for the refinement, the motorcycle is not absolutely smooth, and some vibrations could be felt on the track, leaving our test rider with buzzing hands after their 20-minute session. The story might be different in the real world.

The motorcycle is as commendable in terms of handling as the R15. It is quick to respond to your inputs, be it around tighter bends or long sweepers. Mid-corner corrections feel easy and forgiving.

As for the brakes, they seem to lack the needed bite for track riding. The feel and progression are strong, but the bite is a tad too squishy to completely rely on them.

Surprisingly, the R2 is almost more comfortable and less sporty than the R15. The seating ergos are more relaxed and there is good space on the seat to move around. It also feels perfect to get into the cornering body position.

Even as an overall package, the R2 is a step ahead with bits like adjustable levers, keyless start, and preload-adjustable front forks. Other niceties like a bi-directional quick shifter, traction control, and riding modes have also been integrated.
