- Could likely be powered by an enlarged version of the 155cc engine
- Likely to produce around 24.6bhp and 19Nm
- Will probably be sold alongside the Yamaha R15
Yamaha has trademarked the ‘YZF-R2’ name in India, likely indicating that the manufacturer is working on a new 200cc supersport. The new bike will be a more powerful alternative to the Yamaha R15, and will go up against the KTM RC200 and the Hero Karizma XMR.

The heart of this upcoming motorcycle could be an enlarged version of the Yamaha R15’s 155cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine. On the R15, it produces 18.1bhp and 14.2Nm, and we reckon it could produce around 24.6bhp and 19Nm in its 200cc avatar.
Yamaha only has the R15 and the R3 in its supersport portfolio, which leaves a gap in its product lineup. With the R2, the brand will be able to fill this gap and compete with rivals like KTM and Hero better. This is one possibility, but there’s also the chance that Yamaha might decide to replace the R15 with the R2. However, the chances of this are rather slim, as the 155cc platform is already quite successful, and it makes no sense to replace it with a more expensive alternative.
So far, there’s no information about the bike’s launch timeline, but we expect it to come to India by the festive season of 2026 or early 2027. We just hope the brand is able to get the pricing right, so somewhere in the Rs. 2.10 to 2.20 lakh mark (ex-showroom).
