- Based on Yamaha’s SPHEV (Series-Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle) system
- Gets an electric motor accompanying the ICE engine
- Launch timeline of the production model is not confirmed yet
Taking a major technological leap, Yamaha has unveiled the new MT-09 Hybrid, which is at the prototype stage as of now. This motorcycle utilises Yamaha’s new SPHEV (Series-Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle) system, which aims to combine the goodness and feel of an ICE vehicle along with the carbon neutrality offered by EVs.

Hybrid technology has been put to use in cars for a long time now, but the size and complexity of the system are keeping the brands from using it in bikes. Yamaha’s SPHEV system first debuted on a scooter prototype in February this year. By using it on a bike now, the company intends to show that the benefits of its hybrid system can also be reaped on a performance motorcycle.

As for the engine-motor architecture, an electric motor has been mounted on top of the engine, and it hides behind the chassis. At slow speeds, the MT-09 Hybrid will ride like an EV with just the motor taking the charge. However, as the speed rises, the ICE engine joins the motor to propel the motorcycle at higher speeds at a quick pace. The switch from electric to hybrid takes place automatically. This will combine the seamless torque-rich riding experience of electric two-wheelers along with the feel and speed typically offered by ICE powerplants.

Visually, the stance of the MT-09 Hybrid looks very similar to its ICE counterpart. However, there are some clear differences to set them apart. The front fascia, especially, looks more radical and futuristic on the Hybrid version. It also gets a large heat sink of sorts on the fuel tank along with an additional, tiny LCD accompanying the main TFT dash. Plus, there are large air intake-like panels sitting under the fuel tank.
As of now, there is no clarity on when the Yamaha MT-09 Hybrid will go on sale for the general public. However, considering the fact that the prototype looks well finished and Yamaha released the video of the bike undergoing test runs, the next announcement about the motorcycle should be out soon.
