Triumph Bonneville 400 Spied Testing for the First Time
    • India-spec Bonneville to be powered by a 350cc motor
    • Likely to be launched in India by end of 2026
    • Features classic Bonneville styling elements

Triumph Motorcycles has finally been caught testing what could be the most crucial addition to its entry-level modern-retro portfolio, the Bonneville 400. While the brand already has a strong foothold in this space with the Speed, Scrambler, and Thruxton 400 range, the Bonneville has remained the only missing piece. Now, that gap looks set to be filled soon.

The test mule clearly showcases classic Bonneville design cues. There’s a large, teardrop-shaped fuel tank, chunky fenders, and a peashooter-style exhaust that immediately evoke the bigger Bonnevilles. Triumph has also paid close attention to the finer details, such as the headlamp mounting bracket, neatly integrated bullet indicators, and even the front fender mounting points, all of which lend the motorcycle an authentic, old-school appeal. Adding to this is a new single-pod instrument cluster and a small circular taillight, both of which further enhance its retro character.

Interestingly, the bike appears to feature a revised subframe, likely to accommodate a flatter seat with white piping. This change could also hint at a longer swingarm, potentially improving visual presence, while also offering more stability to the bike.

Triumph Bonneville 350 Engine From Right

Unlike its 400cc siblings, the Bonneville sticks to traditional hardware. It gets telescopic front forks, twin rear shock absorbers, and spoke wheels, adding to its retro charm. Even the disc brake design seems to be inspired by the larger Bonneville models, maintaining its classic lineage.

Under the bodywork, the India-spec version is expected to use a 350cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. This move is strategic, allowing Triumph to benefit from India’s lower 18 per cent GST bracket. Meanwhile, international markets will continue with the 398cc motor; however, it is likely to be offered in a different state of tune to suit the Bonnie's character.

Interestingly, despite the smaller displacement, Triumph is likely to market the bike as the Bonneville 400 in India, aligning with its existing strategy of branding the current 350cc-powered bikes as 400s.

If priced right, the new Bonneville 400 has the potential to shake up the segment long dominated by the Royal Enfield Classic 350. Whether it can truly challenge that stronghold will depend on its pricing and real-world performance, something we’ll only know closer to its expected launch towards the end of this year.
