Employees of Suzuki Motorcycle have threatened to go on a 30-day strike if their demand to take back two workers, Pradeep Kumar and Avinesh Kumar, who were suspended in February, is not met. The company suspended the duo after they resorted to violent altercation with some of the factory supervisors over some personal issues. One of them is believed to be the secretary of the workers union.
Suzuki Powertrain is also expected to be affected by the strike. After the recently held union elections, the union once again raised an old issue of revoking the suspension of three workers for attempting to rally mass support during the July 18 riots last year. It is believed that the employees of both unions will hold the strike together.
It has been close to a year since the riots took place at the Manesar plant. The violence had a major impact on the company’s overall sales and profits and if the powertrain arm decides to go on strike, the Maruti as well as Suzuki Motorcycles will be badly affected. "Both unions have separately met company management officials and given a 30-day strike notice. They have asked them to solve their problems or they will go on a full strike," a source said told FE.
