Royal Enfield Classic 500 Pegasus – What to expect

Royal Enfield has taken the wraps off a new special edition model of the Classic 500, christened as the Pegasus. The motorcycle pays a tribute to the Royal Enfield WD 125 ‘Flying Flea’, a motorcycle used by the British paratroopers during the World War II. It will soon be launched in India in limited numbers. Here is what you can expect from the Classic 500 Pegasus -

Unique paint scheme

The Classic 500 Pegasus borrows its moniker and the insignia from the British parachute regiment that airdropped and used the Flying Flea behind enemy lines. To give it that retro look, the Classic 500 Pegasus is painted in two distinctive matte colours – olive green and brown, although only the latter will be sold in India. The engine, exhaust, headlamp bezel and wheels are finished in black, while the crankcase is colour coordinated with the tank. The Pegasus regiment’s insignia is painted onto the tank and the saddlebags.

Accessories

The Classic 500 Pegasus comes equipped with two canvas saddlebags. The air filter box has a leather strap with a metal buckle running across it. It doesn’t get a pillion seat.

Exclusivity

The Classic 500 Pegasus has been produced in a limited run of 1,000 units, of which only 250 units have been allocated for the Indian market. The motorcycle will be available only through an online sale on Royal Enfield’s official website. The last time the company had such an online sale, the Classic 500 Squadron Blue got sold out in just 26 minutes.

Powertrain and cycle parts

At the heart of the Classic 500 Pegasus is the same 499cc air-cooled fuel-injected single-cylinder engine. It delivers 27.2bhp and 41.3Nm of torque through a five-speed transmission. It rides on a 19-inch front wheel with 35mm telescopic forks and an 18-inch rear wheel with dual spring suspension. Brake setup consists of a 280mm front disc and a 240mm rear disc.

Pricing

The Classic 500 Pegasus has been launched in the UK at GBP 4,999 (Rs 4.57 lakhs), which is GBP 300 (Rs 27,407) pricier than the regular Classic 500. As such, we can expect the Classic 500 Pegasus to be priced in between Rs 2.0 lakhs and Rs 2.2 lakhs in India.
