New BMW R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B: Details Explained

BMW Motorrad has unveiled the new R 18 Transcontinental and the R 18 B for select international markets. The new variants of the R 18 have received changes both in terms of cosmetics as well as equipment. While BMW has unveiled the new variants for select international markets, there's no word about its India launch. To know more about the new variants here, we bring you the details of the same. 

Design

The new BMW R 18 Transcontinental sports a tourer design. It comes with a fairing-mounted tall windscreen, wind deflector, flaps, engine protection bars, side cases, top case, seat heating, chrome trim and the engine in silver metallic.

On the other hand, the R 18 B gets bagger styling and is offered with a low windshield, a slimmer seat and a matt black metallic engine. Both the motorcycles are offered in four colour options: First Edition, Black Storm Metallic, Option 719 Galaxy Dust Metallic/Titan Silver 2 Metallic and Manhattan Metallic Matte.

The new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B both variants are powered by a 1802cc air/oil-cooled twin-cylinder boxer engine that sits in a double-loop tube steel frame and produces 89.9bhp at 4,750rpm and 150Nm at 3000rpm. All this power and torque is taken to its wheels via a six-speed transmission. 

TFT / Instrument Cluster

Features

Both the variants feature all-LED lights, four analogue round instrument clusters, a 10.25-inch TFT-colour display, keyless ride, three riding modes (Rain, Rock, and Roll) and Marshall sound system. The R 18 Transcontinental gets Marshall Gold Series 2 (six-speaker system), while the R 18 B features Marshall Gold Series (four-speaker system). The cruiser bikes are also offered with safety features such as dynamic cruise control, active cruise control, engine drag torque control, hill-start control and integral ABS.

Hardware

The suspension duty on both variants are handled by telescopic forks at the front and a swing-arm-mounted cantilever suspension strut at the rear. Meanwhile, for braking, they employ 300mm twin discs at the front and a 300mm single disc at the rear assisted by integral ABS. The R 18 Transcontinental and the R 18 B mounts a 19-inch wheel at the front and a 16-inch wheel at the rear. These wheels are wrapped in tyres having 120mm width at the front and 180mm width at the rear.
