MotoGP 2026: VR46 Ducati's Fabio Di Giannantonio wins chaotic Catalunya GP

VR46 Ducati racing’s Fabio Di Giannantonio produced a stunning ride to win a chaotic and drama-filled Catalan Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The race, however, was overshadowed by multiple crashes, two red flags, and late penalties that completely reshuffled the podium order.

    A dramatic opening

The opening phase of the race was intense as soon as the lights went out. Pole-sitter Pedro Acosta managed to stay in the lead as the hard-charging Alex Marquez on the Gresini Ducati was locked in hot pursuit. Just when the race appeared to be settling down, disaster struck on Lap 12.

Acosta suddenly suffered a technical issue that dramatically slowed his KTM on the racing line. Alex Marquez, following closely behind, had no time to react and slammed into the rear of Acosta’s bike at high speed. The violent crash sent Marquez airborne and tumbling down the side of the race track. The debris from his mangled bike struck the tailing pack, including Fabio Di Giannantonio. Marquez was later taken to the hospital with reported injuries, while Acosta escaped without major harm.

    The first restart

After the restart, the drama continued. Riders pushed aggressively in the shortened race distance and another major incident unfolded when Johann Zarco crashed heavily, collecting Bagnaia and Luca Marini in the process. Zarco’s leg was caught in the tail section of Pecco's Ducati as he cartwheeled across the gravel trap. Race control red-flagged the event for a second time, forcing officials to organize a final 12-lap sprint to decide the winner.

    Diggia on a fire

The final restart saw Di Giannantonio come alive. The Italian quickly moved into the lead and displayed excellent pace under pressure. Joan Mir and Fermin Aldeguer kept him honest throughout the closing laps, while Acosta’s hopes disappeared after contact with Ai Ogura on the final lap sent him crashing out. Di Giannantonio eventually crossed the finish line first to secure his second MotoGP victory.

Initially, Joan Mir finished second ahead of Aldeguer, but post-race tire pressure penalties altered the final classification. Mir was handed a 16-second penalty, promoting Bagnaia onto the podium in third place. Aldeguer inherited second, while Marco Bezzecchi climbed to fourth and strengthened his championship lead over his teammate, Jorge Martin. The next race will be held from 29-31 May in Mugello, Italy.
