Highest selling two-wheelers in India in 2018

The Indian two-wheeler industry is a fast-growing market which has registered a positive growth year after year. With new brands making their foray into the market and existing ones coming up with new products, the year 2018 witnessed a notable hike in overall two-wheeler sales over the past years. Now, with the onset of 2019, we take a look at the two-wheelers that racked up the highest sales figures through the year. Here’s a detailed report on the same.

1. Honda Activa:

With the scooter market witnessing a substantial growth in 2018, customer preferences saw the Honda Activa winning the crown for the highest selling two-wheeler in the country with 30,93,481 units in 2018. The company managed to sell 3,39,878 units of the Activa in April, which was the highest in the entire year. On an average, the brand has managed to sell 2,57,790 units of the Activa on a monthly basis. The lowest sales were reported in December with 1,74,393 units.

2. Hero MotoCorp Splendor:

Considering the growing inclination for scooters over motorcycles, the popular Splendor had to settle down to the second position in the charts in 2018. The Splendor has been the brand’s highest selling product contributing a major share in overall sales figures. The company sold a total of 30,00,278 units of the commuter motorcycle in 2018 which averaged to 2,50,023 units per month.

3. Hero MotoCorp HF Deluxe:

Coming in at third position on the list is the Hero MotorCorp HF Deluxe. Positioned below the Splendor but above the bare-basic HF Dawn, the HF Deluxe registered a total sale of 21,13,045 units in 2018. Despite its affordable sticker price, the HF Deluxe offers attractive features like electric start and alloy wheels as an option.     

4. Honda CB Shine:

Honda’s popular commuter motorcycle, the CB Shine, managed to sell 10,21,800 units, thereby securing the fourth position in the list. The motorcycle is positioned above the Livo and the company’s Dream series in the geared motorcycle range. Overall, Honda managed to sell 85,150 units of the CB Shine in 2018.

5. Hero MotoCorp Passion:

Besides having two products in the top three, Hero’s third highest sold product in 2018, the Passion, also came in fifth, overall. Registering a total of 9,68,354 units with an average sale of 80,696 units, the Passion secured the fifth position after the Honda CB Shine with a margin of little more than 50k units.

6. TVS XL 100:

This is the only moped in the list which goes to show how popular the TVS XL 100 is in India. TVS sold 8,81,640 units of the moped with an average sale of 72,470 units per month. While the lowest numbers were reported in December with 59828 units, the highest were recorded during the festive season in September with 99,593 units.

7. TVS Jupiter:

Coming in at the seventh position, the TVS Jupiter found 8,16,994 homes in 2018. Selling around 68,082 units on an average, the Jupiter registered its highest sales in October with 1,02,132 units as compared to the lowest in January at 51,868 units. 

8. Hero MotoCorp Glamour:

The Glamour sold 7,82,675 units in 2018. Hero managed to sell the motorcycle at an average of 65,222 units each month. Despite poor sales reported in the opening and closing months of the year, the Glamour witnessed a steady graph for the remaining months.

9. Bajaj CT100:

Bajaj’s entry-level CT100 made it to the ninth position in the list after registering a total sale of 6,97,842 units. The commuter has managed to garner numbers as compared to other commuter offerings from Bajaj like the Platina and Discover. On an average, the company managed to sell 58,153 units of the motorcycle per month. 

10. Bajaj Pulsar 150:

Last but not least in this list is the Pulsar 150. Despite being the oldest amongst the other Pulsar models, it continues to rack impressive numbers for the company. Bajaj managed to sell 5,70,786 units of the Pulsar 150 with an average sale of 47,565 units per month.

Conclusion

While the title for the highest selling two-wheeler in 2018 was acquired by the Honda Activa, the overall brand presence with four products in the list was accomplished by Hero MotoCorp. While commuter motorcycles continue to retain the major share of the two-wheeler sales, the scooter segment has been notably growing with the larger 125cc scooter segment also witnessing traction.
